Whether you become a teacher or not, Ashiyana's intention is to inspire you to be authentically you - clear, confident, loving, and flowing with life. For those who want to teach, Ashiyana wishes to create self-empowered teachers, who teach intuitively rather than following Ashiyana's or someone else's ideas. Ultimately, the mat is just your laboratory, Ashiyana will encourage you to explore yoga in all aspects of your life - as a process of self-healing, and learning to be responsible for your own equanimity and joy. From here, you are able to teach what you love, and therefore "become the teaching" rather than merely teach a class.
The Ashiyana retreat setting is quite magical, hidden from view and surrounded by mountain-tropical flora and fauna. All five cabanas (10 rooms) are set at the lower level of the hill, a short walk from the Loquinhas river flowing through the land. The main building, housing the lounge, restaurant, and reception is at the top of the hill, a two to three minute walk away, and the shala and spa area is even closer, just behind the cabanas.
The design of the cabana rooms was inspired by the architecture of Bahia, the coastal state famous for its delicious seafood cuisine and dance culture (think Samba!). Each cabana has two separate double rooms, built of wood and local brick, and finished with cream-colored, polished plaster.
There are high ceilings, a separate toilet, basin and shower, and a beautiful balcony with day bed. Each room has a fan, mosquito nets and has locally produced furniture and finishes. The feel is an elegant, understated mix of comfort and vernacular design.
Students who complete their training are eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as Registered Yoga Teachers (RYT®).
Anyone who has an earnest desire for self-knowledge and for whom the words on this page resonate. You may be a yoga practitioner, a teacher who is lacking direction and clarity, or you may be new to yoga, whatever the case may be, it is not important since ideas of beginner and advanced are just that - ideas.
It is not necessary that you go on to teach yoga after the course since Ashiyna's intention is to inspire you to be more of yourself - authentic, confident, loving, clear, and flowing with life. In this way, you will discover ever more about your divine purpose here on earth.
Ashiyana visualizes a yoga teacher, and indeed all humans, as having the possibility to experience their inner peace of being and thence invite others towards the same. The course is far more about you within, than it is about you the body.
For if you know yourself more fully, then you grow to love yourself, and hence flow with life rather than against her. As this realization expands, if you choose to teach, you are increasingly able to teach from your 'center' and therefore "become the teaching", rather than simply teach a class.
The course will be framed around the four main paths of yoga - Jnana, Karma, Bhakti, and Hatha (Raja). There will be a thorough examination of the traditional and most common interpretation of yoga according to Patanjali’s eight limbs of Raja Yoga.
However, this will be set against a varied backdrop of alternate perspectives of yoga and life, so that you may realize your own vision of what yoga means for you in today’s world. Ashiyana intends to challenge, inspire and empower you.
The course will be presented by a group of teachers who come from different backgrounds and sets of conditioning, yet share a similar vision that yoga offers a path to liberation, not in some theoretical future possibility, but in the realization of your own inner peace of being here and now.
Ashiyana places great emphasis on the ability to create a loving, nurturing and safe class, with due consideration for breath awareness and techniques (pranayama), warming up the body (pavanmuktasana), appropriate sequencing of postures, and then relaxation (savasana).
You will be empowered to teach and during the course, you will focus on specific classical Hatha yoga postures, seed sun salutations, and meditation. With this understanding, you are encouraged to be creative and explore "your" way of teaching.
The idea of the asana part of the course is that you learn the postures safely and correctly and then develop your own self-practice, which will inform your way of teaching.
There will be a variety of ways in which Ashiyana will encourage and support you to learn and share. However, there will also be significant periods of alone time, aside from studying, where you are encouraged to practice silence, solitude, and meditation. This is supported by daily times of silence.
There will be ongoing homework and assessment - including written, verbal, and practical. Typically, the main exams are in anatomy (end of week two), philosophy (week three), asana test and one hour taught class (week four). After the training, you will receive either teaching or an attendance certificate, depending on your overall performance throughout the four-week training.
Your experience before the training and your intention after you have completed it influences the result at the end. Ashiyana is always interested in its students staying connected with the school, and indeed perhaps coming back to teach or work as a therapist in the future at one of its centers, once they have adequate experience.
Sunday is a day off until dinner, and Wednesday is a half-day off.

Matthew has been engaged with Indian studies and yoga for over forty years. He has traveled extensively throughout India, which he first explored in 1977. He has visited several hundred holy sites in South Asia, and in several stages, he trekked almost the entire length of the Indian Himalayas, a distance of around 2,000 miles. He has also trekked quite extensively in Nepal and Tibet. He began experimenting with yoga practices as a teenager, and then, in 1990 took up a daily practice of Ashtanga yoga, training with Danny Paradise. His own practice is a modified form of Ashtanga yoga.
In Ashiyana view, Brazil is the new center of the spiritual world, with a cultural heritage steeped in shamanic practices and teachings. In fact, seekers from all over the world are more likely to Google "shaman", than "guru" these days, and also the multi-various medicines, and associated rituals and ceremonies of the Amazon basin are spreading worldwide.
Brazil has so much to offer - unmatched biodiversity, delicious, varied cuisine, an incredible climate, and unrivaled friendliness. Ashiyana Brazil is located about 230 kilometers from Brasilia, midwest Brazil, in an area of exceptional natural beauty, known as Alto Paraíso de Goiás (High Paradise).
Alto Paraíso is a small city referred to as 'the gateway' to Chapada dos Veadeiros - a large area of in the center of Brazil known for its abundant, incredible fauna, flora, and geographical formations. The region boasts a National Park listed as a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO and has one of the world's oldest and most diverse tropical ecosystems.
The area is considered to be 'the magnetic heart of Brazil' due to its underground layer of quartz crystal and is home to numerous mystical and spiritual communities. There are so many unique aspects to High Paradise, but Ashiyana really can’t overstate the magnificence of the innumerable waterfalls in the area.
If you’ve never sun-bathed on a sandy ‘beach’ by a waterfall, you really have a treat in store. One of the most sought out of these is ‘Loquinhas’, which is located at the top of the valley, just one kilometer away. It’s not the size that impresses, as it’s small in stature, but the multiple levels and swimming holes that make for an incredibly refreshing and unique trek.
Much of the land around Alto is downtrodden pastureland where cows lazily graze. However, Ashiyana's retreat land has been free from grazing for over 15 years, and the ancient forest has been allowed to regenerate itself. There are innumerable forms of flaura and fauna that make this one of the most diverse areas on the planet.
Perhaps most noticeable, though, is the palpable stillness and silence on the land. Granted, the araras (giant parrots) and toucans can be wonderfully vocal at times, and the occasional howl of a wolf or wild boar punctuates the emptiness, but for the majority of the time, it is quite simply the silence that prevails.
Ashiynateacher training in Goa has put them on the map worldwide, and one of the most frequent comments, aside from the compassionate and nurturing vibe, is the delicious food. Ashiyna might even have surpassed themselves here at Ashiyana Brazil, in terms of yumminess, healthiness, and variety.
It would be hard to pick any one single item, like Ashiyna's infamous chocolate balls in Goa, but the "acai" (which is like a blend of the most delicious ice cream and sorbet to be found on Planet Earth), and the "pao de queijo" (cheesy balls made from mandioca flour) would definitely be right up there in the pantheon of "healthy-delicious"!
Excursions in Alto take on a whole new meaning, as even though the place is largely undiscovered by foreign tourists, multiple forms of adventure activity are close at hand - white water rafting, zip-lining, canyoning, trekking, waterfall sightseeing, cycling, horse-riding, to name but a few. Alto is at the entrance to the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, a Unesco World Heritage site, resplendent with 200 million-year-old rock formations, crystalline bedrock, and drop-dead gorgeous vistas!
Massages and other spa treatments will be available on-site at an additional cost.
