Yoga teachers Michelle and Dina invite you to join them on a once in a lifetime retreat in beautiful Watamu, Kenya! Dive deeper into the practice of yoga while immersing yourself in the beauty of Watamu. There will be plenty of downtimes for you to explore the local area. Not only that, delight your palate with delicious healthy meals. Come and elevate your yoga practice and be in awe of the Kenyan's nature!
On this retreat, you have the option of staying at the tree house ou a villa on. All rooms have their own unique design and personal touches. Experience the magnificence of the daily sunrise and sunset, overlooking the indigenous forest and the ocean.
The treehouse co-exists with the original coastal forests of Watamu. The towers were built on existing clearings of the forest without cutting trees with the intention of preserving the forest. This option is ideal for those looking to immerse themselves and be one with nature on the Kenyan coast. The rooms range for the single adventurer on the top floor wanting 180 degrees views to sharing same-sex friends or couples in the North or South towers. The cool-pool remains a refreshing temperature all year round and above it the massage and pedicure room.
Matalai meaning "change of the winds in Swahili has eclectic views and a beachfront location. The villa has three bedrooms available for private or sharing. It is ideal for those seeking a more private and exclusive stay in a house adjacent to the Treehouse where our main shala is housed. The traditional, thatched sitting room and veranda are airy and relaxing. You can enjoy a drink in the plunge pool on the top floor or in the swimming pool in the garden.
With a personal practice exceeding two decades, Michelle can't imagine or even remember much of life without yoga. She first began teaching yoga in 2004 and is certified with 500 hours Yoga Alliance as well as secondary group ashtanga certification from Mysore India. Michelle's often challenging classes mirror her philosophy that it is easy to be calm if everything around you is calm, but can you maintain that inner calm and steady breath when you are being challenged?
Dina is a Jivamukti yoga 300-hour certified teacher and has been sharing her passion through teaching since June 2015. She stumbled across yoga at the age of 15 through a Gaiam home video bought on Amazon and has been hooked ever since. She also offers sessions in prenatal yoga, Ashtanga, Thai yoga massage, and meditation. Dina is also a nurturing birth certified doula supporting women and their partners from pregnancy to parenthood.
This retreat will take place in Watamu, Kenya. There are two houses available being the stunning Treehouse in Kenya which has an open feel or the adjacent gorgeous Matalai house which is more private.
Meals at Treehouse are nutritionally balanced and may consist of soup and a vegetarian/vegan main course, a fish/seafood main course, and a number of side dishes and salads - followed by a sugar-free dessert. Please let Art Yoga know your preferences at the time of booking and they will be sure your needs are met. Vegans and vegetarians can be specifically catered for if needed.
Please note that no alcohol or sodas are served at the treehouse. Art Yoga does, however, have readily accessible communal fridges near the various dining areas. You are welcome to bring your own alcohol and keep it in the fridges to drink with meals, or whenever you like. There is no corkage fee. Started by local residents in 1997, this not for profit organization uses practical conservation, community involvement and development, education, research and campaigning to protect Kenya’s marine environment. They rehabilitate turtles on site and if you’re lucky you may be able to help them release one back into the ocean – a truly special experience.
As the great saying goes, when was the last time you did something for the first time? In Watamu’s prime kite conditions, take this opportunity to try something completely new and exciting with a three day beginner kite-surf course. Tribe also does lessons and equipment rentals, and is 300 meters from Treehouse on the beach.
Have you ever dreamed of scuba diving in warm, tropical waters surrounded by brilliantly colored tropical fish? From the 13th century, Gede Ruins is an ancient town surrounded by tropical forest located between Watamu and Malindi. It was once a developed, cosmopolitan area with archaeological evidence of artifacts from around the world such as Ming Chinese vases and Venetian glass, and researchers are still baffled as to why Gede was abandoned all those centuries ago.
The largest and most intact coastal forest in East Africa, Arabuko-Sokoke stretches 420 km2 along the East coast. With 20% of Kenya's bird species, 30% butterfly species and at least 24 rare and endemic birds, mammals and butterfly species, the forest is really a glorious natural space. Take an early morning or late evening trip for a walk in the forest, including birds and wildlife - many elephants!
One of the most interesting activities in Watamu is the incredible research centre and snake farm that houses the largest collection of snakes in East Africa. Bio-Ken is open to the public with an entrance fee of 1000/- for a fascinating guided tour of the 100+ species including snakes, tortoises, lizards and a chameleon.
Watch the sunset with a cocktail (or mocktail) in hand from the comfort of a majestic dhow as you sail through Mida Creek. Trips are run at sunset and include a sailing trip down the creek with drinks and bitings - or even a full meal.
There are a number of dhow operators including the four below.

Or order custom garments (5 days to make)
One may think that once you’ve seen one Kenyan beach you’ve seen them all; that would be a rather unfortunate assumption. About an hour and a half drive north of Watamu lies the untouched beaches of Che Shale, featuring completely unique landscapes, kite-surfing and a seafood restaurant featuring soft-shell crab.
Malindi is Watamu’s Northern neighbouring town, dating back to the 13th century. Much bigger than Watamu, Malindi has many shops and restaurants, as well as bars and night clubs. Malindi also has a museum, historical monuments and a number of surfing spots.
One of Kenya’s top courses, Vipingo Ridge lies between the coastline and the rolling inland hills. It is the only PGA accredited course in East Africa and boasts gorgeous views, fine Bermuda grass and a computerized irrigation system that maintains those lush, emerald-green hues.
