    • Review by A traveler from New York City, USA

"Apoyo Lodge is definitely paradise found! If you're looking to unwind and detach from the outside world for a little while, this place is perfect since it's so secluded from any other town or resort you feel like you're really going off the grid! The Laguna de Apoyo is an ancient imploded volcano with water and "sand" rich in minerals it's suppose to be super healing. The ground are perfectly kept and the staff is beyond hospitable. Miriam, one of the owners is also the chef and a magical one at that! The food was like something you would find at a fancy vegan gourmet restaurant in NYC :) I would go back just for the food!"

"The Lodge is absolutely gorgeous! The pictures do not do it justice. Its secluded on the edge of a old volcano that is now a lake. The water is full of minerals, so its great for your skin, but other wildlife (crocodiles) can't live in it. We did a week long meditation retreat here and it was perfect for us. Quiet, secluded, warm, breezy, and beautiful to the eyes. Miriam and Manuel (the owners) are like angels fallen from heaven. They have a beautiful staff too. They made sure that everything for our retreat went absolutely perfect. They served us the freshest plant based meals and juices every day. The food was too good. Im inspired to continue eating this way, my body really liked it. They also take a lot of pride in being completely eco-friendly. I felt like I was taking really good care of the Earth while I was there. We made a really special connection with the owners and staff. I feel like we are family now, and we always have a home to go back to. If you are visiting Nicaragua, you must spend some time here!"

"SERVICE- The owner is gracious, organized and detail-oriented. We chose the space to participate in a 5-day silent meditation and yoga retreat and her staff was completely accommodating of our needs (they maintained silence, orchestrated communication mechanisms we could use when necessary, and were silent themselves). They were BEYOND accommodating. This is the best service I have EVER had at ANY hotel across Europe, US, or Asia combined!!"

"ROOM- Room was beautiful even though I had a smaller one. Stone-studded shower with heat and good water pressure. The only issue as the smallest room was the smell that may have come from poor ventilation. Since this is in the jungle, there were a few spiders, which made my sleep a bit difficult! Staff cleaned PERFECTLY each day."

"ENVIRONMENT- STUNNING. This is set on a volcanic lake, the lake itself has no fish or seaweed so is comfortable to swim in if you don't like critters! The gardens cultivated on the grounds are gorgeous, lush, and colorful, and there are a number of species of birds flying around, including hawks."

"FOOD- AMAZING PERFECT HEAVENLY. The food is created with such care and love that you can TASTE IT. Unfortunately, I don't have all photos of the meal b/c on retreat we weren't using cell phones. The food is mostly raw and all vegan, but don't let that fool you, it is DELICIOUS. Fresh fruit and juice is served as well. I was blown away, and left glowing from ALL THAT DELICIOUS FRESH FRUIT!"

"If you care about peace, health, beauty, and kindness, there is no better place to stay in Laguna de Apoyo than Apoyo Lodge. The owner, Miriam, is masterfully caring for guests with stylish, comfortable, and impeccable rooms facing lush gardens, a tranquil beach, and the always-wonderful Apoyo crater lake. Meals are worth the trip alone as Miriam delights all, including omnivores, with creative, delicious, local, and in-season plant-based breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. The property offers yoga, fitness, and messages in a spectacular outdoor space as well. Reserve your room now and you will thank me later."

"Apoyo Lodge is a very special place. While it can be a little bit of an adventure to get there from Managua, due to it's location on a dirt road, it adds to the uniqueness. Located right on Laguna de Apoyo with a private lakeview and jungle setting, Apoyo offers a pristine eco-lodge style setting. The food is absolutely amazing with healthy, raw and local options. The lodge owners Sasha and Shamus are personable and accommodating. The crystal water of the lake is refreshing and healing and the property offers a beautiful yoga platform overlooking the whole lake. I just hosted a weeklong retreat at Apoyo Lodge and can't wait to return to host another retreat in December. Apoyo is a very special place and highly recommend visiting the lodge when traveling to the laguna."

"I stayed here for two nights during a yoga retreat, and wish it had been longer! Apoyo Lodge is hidden away in a secluded spot right on the Laguna de Apoyo. The setting is unbelievable - the laguna is right there on the threshold of the property and it feels like it belongs only to you! I stayed in one of the suites that looked straight out to the laguna with a huge terrace. We slept with all the doors open for the wonderful breeze. During the day I was spoiled for choice as to which hammock had the best view and breeze spot, and spent many a moment letting the amazing waters rejuvenate me. The yoga platform, with its stunning views, was a joy. Sasha and Seamus, who own and live there, make you feel very welcome. Sasha's raw food menu is exceptional - especially the desserts. Our group comprised a number of meat eaters, so there was some anxiety about the vegan prospect. But we all commented on how surprised and satisfied we'd been. If only I could eat like that all the time. A really special experience, not to be missed."

"I went by myself and Sasha made me feel welcome right away that I almost felt like a family member. The view from my room was amazing. I did yoga twice a day which was so peaceful listening to the water and the view of the lagoon as well as the instructor was exceptional. My trip was extremely effortless. When I wanted to do an excursion, a driver who knew English was hired and he took care of me for the day. The food was unreal. I'm a meat eater but I didn't miss it once. My experience was truly unforgettable. Thank you so much, Apoyo Lodge, you guys are wonderful. I miss you all including the pets."

"My boyfriend and I stayed at Apoyo Lodge for five days and it was the best location we had been to in Nicaragua. The owners, Sasha and Shamus, were so caring and made our stay unforgettable. The lodge is located in a natural reserve and has a direct access to the laguna. From our room, we had a lovely view above the lake. The terrace is perfect for hanging out and relaxing. Furthermore, we had yoga lessons each day during our retreat on the platform that is also located next to the lake. Well, there is just no better way to start the day. The raw vegan food we got was served by Sasha and her friends and weas the best we have ever had. Only fresh ingredients were used, well-picked and prepared with a lot of love and care. We recommend this place to everybody who is looking for a peaceful place to escape from the busy city life. We would always come back!"

"This was my third time to Apoyo Lodge, and it just gets better with each visit. I've seen the lodge transform and grow so much in the last five years. The owner's Sasha and Shamus truly put their heart and soul into this place, and it really shines through with such natural beauty. The land has bloomed with more fruit trees, coconuts, flowers, lemon grass, palms, aloe vera plants, and so much more. The gardeners are always working! The very clean rooms are supplied with fresh drinking water, natural soaps or conditioner, beach towel, shower towel, hand towel, cozy pillows, big queen sized beds, and nicely decorated with flowers off their land. I loved the two new rooms they built below the lake view suites and the new updates in the other rooms. I was co-hosting my first yoga retreat here recently with a group of nine women, and it was a perfect intimate escape for all of us. Teaching yoga in this setting is such a treat. It is so relaxing and harmonizing with nature. The waters of Laguna De Apoyo are crystal clear, warm, and soft from all the natural minerals. It's actually a volcanic crater that filled with water over thousands of years and is one of the few nature reserves in Nicaragua. They are lucky to have such a peaceful, private, and secluded area to rejuvenate the mind, body, and soul. All the meals either came from supplies off their land or local organic farms and markets close by. The food was all around amazing, abundant, creative, and delicious! All dairy refined sugar and gluten-free! Some of my favorite breakfast meals were smoothie bowls, fresh green juices, creative fruit bowls, and buckwheat fruit parfaits. Lunch was always a surprise, from raw walnut taco salad, rainbow lettuce wraps, sushi, and leafy green salads to zucchini pasta. Dinner was always something to look forward to, from stuffed butternut squash, kale falafels, to gluten-free fire oven-roasted pizza. The raw vegan desserts are so scrumptious: butter tarts, brownies, key lime pies and cocoa truffles. Sasha has grown so much with all of her plant-based recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desserts. She is a great teacher and chef that openly shares her recipes and how to prepare them. All of the students, including myself, were inspired and learned plenty of healthy tips for the kitchen. The growing staff was amazing, caring, and always available to help or answer any questions. You always felt safe with a 24-hour security guard and protected by their friendly animals at your side. I am feeling healthy, satisfied, inspired, rejuvenated, and refreshed after the wonderful stay at Apoyo Lodge, and looking forward to the next retreat."

"I have been bringing yoga groups to Apoyo Lodge countless times over the last two years and have only seen it get better and better with time. Although it is a bit of an adventure to get there, it is worth every second of it especially since the drivers, Sasha, and Shamus work with making you love Nicaragua even more than you did before you get in the truck. Apoyo Lodge is the only place you can find raw, vegan cuisine of its caliber in the country and although some members of the group are sometimes apprehensive, they always leave satiated and with their favorite meals of the trip having been there. The yoga shala is a magical place to practice and only steps away from the lake. The two front rooms open up to the lake and are highly recommended. All rooms are comfortable, with private bathrooms and hot water, a rarity in the country, but if you really want to wake up to the magic of this place, be sure to book the suites. If you can step away from the hammocks and the yoga, I recommend a hike up to the vista which can be arranged by the lovely owners Sasha and Shamus. All around, quite a gem in the middle of the country, great staff, delicious food and worth the trek."

"We had our two weeks long retreat at Apoyo Lodge in January 2015. Sasha and Shamus were so amazing and helpful in helping us organize the retreats with prompt replies and making arrangements as per our requests. The lodge and the rooms are beautiful and the tranquility of the laguna definitely helps you to wind down from your monotonous schedule and find that peaceful balance. The raw vegan food that Sasha and Shamus made for us was gourmet and amazing. Thank you both of you for all the help and will see you again."

"We stayed here for just one night coming from San Juan del Sur to be closer to Managua airport for our flight the following afternoon. We were sad to be leaving San Juan del Sur since we enjoyed the Pacific coast a lot but this was definitely a nice surprise. We were in a lake view suite that had a nice balcony overlooking the lake with modern bathroom facilities and comfortable beds. While not vegan, Sasha's vegan meals were amazing and I ate everything. There is definitely a personal touch to everything here that we didn't really see in the other places we stayed in Nicaragua. Loved the dogs that befriended us and the waters of the lagoon are warm and just a few steps from the room. They arranged transportation for us to get there and to the airport no problem, would definitely recommend this as the place to stay when visiting Apoyo."

"Located deep in the lush Nicaraguan jungle that surrounds a lake that has formed over the many years in a dormant volcano, it's not difficult to understand why this place is so peaceful and relaxing. This was the final stop on a yoga retreat that I was on. There is a large platform that allows you to do your practice outside and under the sun. Sasha, a warm, friendly and kind spirited woman, also offers to teach lessons."

"I don't even know where to begin. I found Apoyo Lodge searching for yoga in Nicaragua. After emailing with Sasha, I could tell I was in for a treat of a retreat! She customized a 2-day vegan yoga retreat for my birthday. It was memorable from beginning to end. A driver was arranged to pick us up in Granada. And while we were a little late, Donaldo our driver was welcoming and friendly. He took us as far as he could where we met Shamus who took us the rest of the way. I loved how remote we were. Far off the beaten path, we felt cut off from the world but seriously right at home. Laguna de Apoyo is a spectacular site. The property of Apoyo Lodge is gorgeous. Well maintained, with all the modern amenities including Wi-Fi. However, you still will enjoy eco-friendly features like composting. We were greeted with fresh coconut water straight from the tree. We took a dip in the warm waters before our first yoga session. Sasha is amazing. Her tone soothes you. Her instruction moves you. We felt great and settled into an amazing dinner. In fact, all the meals provided at Apoyo Lodge were stellar."

"Apoyo Lodge, not to be confused with Apoyo Resort, is quiet, relaxed, and peaceful. If you need a minute to disconnect on a hammock or your own lanai, enjoy the view, natural sounds, this is it. The owners are laid back. It's a quaint place, so not too many travelers at a time. Rooms are comfortable, large, and with free reign of kitchen and grill, its home away. It is remote, so once you're there, I wouldn't recommend trying to out into neighboring towns at night. Like yoga at sunset and meditation at daybreak on a dock overlooking the lake? You will after you've had a session with Sasha. This was my first time in Nicaragua, went on a whim, by myself and so happy I did."
