During the training, you will be staying in Holumba Haven. Holumba has a delightful old-world charm about it. Spread in two acres, it is set in an orchid nursery which has an amazing diversity of flora. There are six cottages that provide a total of sixteen rooms with attached toilets and running hot water. Together with a cozy dining area with a lounge and Wi-Fi, there is a small temple for meditation and a yoga hall.
Moreover, Anandavan Yog Peeth also offer a free stay for two days before the start of the course. During this free stay, there is no yoga activity. These two days are offered so you may arrive early to rest and recover from the travel before the yoga course starts.
Anandavan Yog Peeth is a yoga school that was opened up in 2015, but behind this new school, there is years of experience of practicing and teaching yoga. The school is located in the eastern Himalayas of India in the town of Kalimpong near Darjeeling. They are offering Yoga Alliance Certified 200-hour teacher training course in the Indian Himalayas.
They conduct programs in collaboration with Rishikesh Yog Peeth of Rishikesh, India. They have been conducting 200, 300 and 500-hour Yoga Alliance certified yoga teacher training programs for the last 10 years.
Anandavan Yog Peeth believes that yoga is a gift to entire humanity and its practice is an antidote to the stress and suffering of our lives. They want to contribute in their small way to bring the benefits of this science to many people.
They also believe that India, the birth place of yoga, has a special responsibility to continue to spread this message of yoga to the world in its original essence.
They are conscious of this responsibility. They will make sincere efforts to follow the path of yoga in its spirit, with compassion, in the right way, and with right expectations.
Where possible, they will use the insights of science to deepen their understanding of yogic practices. Otherwise they keep an open heart and mind and trust their instincts. Yoga was never meant to be followed blindly. Questioning everything is also yoga.
These purification techniques are prescribed in Hatha yoga. They are designed to make the body strong and healthy, and are considered as preparatory steps towards pranayama and meditation.
The training will take you through various asanas in a methodical manner, progressing onwards to increasingly advanced poses while laying a solid foundation as you proceed. The nuances of each asana will be explored in detail, connecting the postures with anatomy. This will give a deeper experience of the asana while understanding and exploring your body.
You will lean the science of anatomy and physiology with enough detail to be able to understand the scientific reasoning behind the cueing, corrections and alignments of the poses. This will lay the foundation to be able to teach safely and with confidence.
This part of the training will cover the basics of yoga philosophy. The aim is to enable you to explore the deeper and more subtle aspects of yoga. This understanding will provide a dimension that will enrich your overall experience. The training shall cover concepts from Patanjali's Yog Sutra, Shrimad Bhagwad Gita, Sankhya Karika and other classic texts of yoga.
Pranayam, chanting and meditation
These practices are the foundations of higher yogic planes. You will discuss why these processes are important and their benefits. You will learn the techniques to harness the energies present in your body to advance to the higher yogic levels. Enough practice will be provided so that you should be able to confidently guide your students in the future.
Teaching practice and methodology
Sufficient time and emphasis is given to the actual practice of teaching during the course. This will give you confidence in your teaching abilities. You will learn teaching methods, how to design a class and work out your own sequences.
You will get an opportunity to design and conduct your own class. This will be built up slowly as you get more comfortable with your learning and start to apply it. Regular feedback will be given so you can evolve your own, unique style of teaching.
Evaluation and feedback is an important part of this training. Our small class size allows us to deeply interact with our students and give timely and continuous feedback. You will be expected to complete assignments and take full classes on your own during the training.
Anandavan Yog Peerh have excursions planned around Kalimpong which include walks, visits to local villages, local handicraft industries, and trips to Tibetan monasteries.
The school is located in the Eastern Himalayan town of Kalimpong which is a part of Darjeeling (of the Tea fame) district in India. Famed for its orchid nurseries, schools, monasteries and moderate climate, this small hill town is scattered along a ridge saddle at an elevation of 1150 meters to 1450 meters.
Kalimpong is situated on a tri-junction of Bhutan, Sikkim and West Bengal; Two passes into Tibet, Jelep la (4702 meters) and Nathu la (4649 meters), can be seen to the north-east. Jelep la pass is only 128 kilometers from Kalimpong and by this virtue; Kalimpong was the fist trading post between Tibet and India until 1962. One can view the entire 180 panorama of the Choten Nigna range of Sikkim Himalayas with Kanchenjunga massif (8,686 meters), the third highest peak in the world. In her majesty, she floats over the clouds with other giants like Kabru (7338 meters), Pandim (6691 meters) and Siniolchu 6888 (meters).

Whether you arrive by air or train, you will need to drive up to Kalimpong. The drive may take 2.5 to 3 hours depending on the traffic and the weather. The drive itself is beautiful. You will enter the mountains after crossing the teak forests in the foot-hills and then drive along the river Teesta for most of the journey. Once you cross Teesta, Kalimpong is only 14 kilometers away.
For International travellers, the main points of entry are New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. Bagdogra (IXB) is the closest airport to Kalimpong. A number of flights are available from many major cities of India. Kolkata is the closest metropolis. A pickup can be arranged and its cost will vary from 1500 to 3000 INR depending on the type of vehicle.
You can reach Kalimpong by bus and this is the cheapest way to get there. This would involve some extra effort to reach the Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus located in Siliguri. If you are arriving at Bagdogra airport, you may need to take a local auto-rickshaw or a taxi to the Siliguri Bus Stand. In case you are arriving by train, take a cycle or auto rickshaw to the bus stand in Siliguri. It will cost you 70 to 100 INR for a bus seat to Kalimpong from Siliguri.
The bus will drop you at the Motor Stand in town. You will then have to take a taxi to reach Holumba.
Nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) which is connected to all major cities of India. There are long distance Rajdhani Express Trains from New Delhi to NJP (22 hours) and multiple trains from Kolkata (overnight).
Once you reach Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri, you will travel onwards by road to reach Kalimpong. If you choose to take a taxi, head to the pre-paid taxi counters that are present at both train station and the airport. Booking a taxi at these counters will ensure you pay the correct fare and not get ripped-off.
There is also shared taxi service. To take one, you will have to find your way to Panitanki more on Sevoke Road. A seat in such shared taxis to Kalimpong will cost 80-100 INR.
After getting in a taxi, instruct the driver to take you to Holumba at 9th mile. Tell them it is near Rockvale School and the Fire station. This should do the trick and you should not have any difficulty in reaching Holumba. Please note Holumba is situated on the main road from Siliguri to Kalimpong and it is reached before the main town area of Kalimpong.
