It is not easy to describe Kerala in few words. Located in the most southwest part of India, facing the Arabian Sea on the west and the mountains of the Western Ghats on the east. It is formed by 14 districts with Trivandrum as its capital city.
Kerala is worldwide considered a tourism destination, but still keeps intact its rich cultural heritage so travelers can immerge in old traditional dances and festival of colors and sound. Temples are constantly chanting respect to their gods and several types of ceremonies are performed throughout the whole year.
This is the land of Ayurveda , the ancient medicine for rejuvenation of mind, body and soul, the land of yoga and meditation, in short the place where to re-discover the inside peace and the outside pleasure of life.
The backwaters, a trip on a boathouse through villages living as thousand years back, endless beaches, still plenty do discover, the pristine Lakshadweep archipelago, another unforgettable beauty of nature.
These places together with other as Alleppey, Kochi, Munnar, Palakkad and Kovalam are reason enough to visit Kerala as a tourist, honeymooner, Ayurveda patient, yoga student or all the things together at the same time.
Kerala is a traveler's paradise, for it is a repository of a wealth of culture and heritage that imparts to the state much of its personality. The culture of Kerala - its civilization, art forms, beliefs and worldview - are primarily Dravidian. Kerala has a rich and fascinating culture. It is the place where people meet from a rainbow of societies, communities and religions that are housed in this small state along the west coast of southern India. A majority of the people of Kerala are Dravidians.
The chief religion is Hinduism with a certain percentage of the population being Muslims and Christians. Kerala is famous for its folk art like mural paintings and the traditional dance forms like the Kathakali and Mohiniyattom, which is a 300 year old activity that is exclusively Keralite. It combines the performing art forms of the opera, ballet, masque and the pantomime. Kathakali dancers combine colour, dance, music, drama and facial expression.
The cultural events of Kerala are the Onam, the Temple Elephant festival at Thrissur, the annual snake boat races at Alleppey etc. Christmas celebrations are also observed widely. A variety of steamed rice cakes and pancakes make up the culinary delicacies of Kerala. Mussels are a favorite seafood dish. Eshtew with appam is a must for every Christian marriage reception. Some of the fermented beverages are kallu - toddy and patta charayam - arrack, the latter being consumed with spicy pickles and boiled egg.
The pristine beauty of Kerala derives from the local customs and traditions that date back to historical times. The customs in the temples in Kerala differ from traditions practiced in other South Indian states. The priests or poojaris are silent during the pooja (mass, temple ceremony). The deity is kept out of sight during the pooja from the devotees by closing the altar during a part of the pooja.
The priest recites mantras in silence while the devotees keep silent. After the prasanna pooja the door opens and the crowd of devotees can catch a glimpse of the decorated deity with the traditional lights lit up. Marriage customs in Kerala derive their foundation on the tradition of Kettukalyanam. It was practiced by the casts of Nairs, Kshatriyas, Ezhavas, Arayas, pulayas and certain tribes to conduct ritual marriages of their daughters of different age groups.
They were married to adult males. Sometimes one man married several girls. In some cases, the bridegroom even acted as the priest by tying a sacramental thread around the bride's neck. Other local customs of Kerala include the rite de passage, rites of childbirth and cousin marriage.
The people of Kerala are distinguished by a fair complexion, regular features and clean habits. The closing of a festival is marked by the Arattu or holy bath. The idols of the deities are carried in a procession to the river for the bath. The purified idols are escorted back to the temple by a grand elephant pageant - the panchavadyam. Pongal is the practice of offering rice, jaggery, coconut and plantains to the goddess Bhagavathy.
Among the Muslims is the practice of Chandanakudam or the ritual offering of coins on earthen pots in shrines. Marumakkathayam is the matrilineal system of inheritance. Some of the other traditions of Kerala are: Achuttuvilakku, Paraveppu, Velichappadu / komaram etc.

" I spent three weeks in Ananda Lakshmi Ayurveda Retreat in the second half of August last year (in 2014). Exceptionally place it every area! If you look for something intimate, discrete and quiet it is a perfect resort for you.I was on the complete Panchakarma stay. It was my first visit to India and also first contact with ayurveda, so I was very excited...! I was very pleased with the stay in Ananda Lakshmi at every level. Everything in this resort is consistent and designated in the way that you feel completeness, unity and harmony. Very clean and comfortable rooms with the breathless view on the sea. Delicious cuisine! The chef all the time was making every effort to adopt Indian tastes to my preferences (I'm not very keen on very spicy kitchen:-). Every day I had a set of, personally arranged for me, treatments. Many different kinds. It was marvelous and exceptional experience. Dr Baiju, doctor of Ayurveda, kept a watchful eye on the whole process of Panchakarma! Doctor is very good observer and professional in his ayurvedic art:-) Every person from the staff was really friendly, helpful, discreet and naturally nice!I'm recommending everybody to experience Panchakarma in his/her life at least once! The best recommendation is that I feel very well. I has been observing the positive effects of all treatments on my body and level of energy for few months after Panchakrma and they still last. I recommend visit this resort in summer months. Less people and good weather. In fact there was small rain nearly every day, but it was very short and only cleaning the air!I will repeat my Panchakarma in Ananda Lakshmi for sure!"

" We spent 2 weeks at Ananda Lakshmi Ayurveda Retreat in January 2013. We found what we are searching for: a peaceful and quiet little place with attentive and personal service, professional treatments and good food. The retreat is located in a well maintained garden, overlooking palm trees and a stunning view to the beach. It takes 20 minute walk to the beach. They provide an open restaurant and a nice pool in the garden to relax after the treatments. We had every early morning a yoga lesson within that wonderful open yoga shalla. The yoga master took very much care about experienced and less experienced attendees. We had fun and improved our practice. The spacious room including bathroom is nicely equipped, especially beds and mattress are excellent for good and healthy sleep. We loved the sliding window in the room which opens the room completely to the garden, giving a wonderful view and let a nice breeze from the sea into the room. Cleaning ladies were very watchful and cleaned the room properly during our treatments. Guys from restaurant provided a heartily service and the manager took care of all wishes. We booked a panchakarma and got every day 1,5 2,5 hours of treatment. Treatment rooms are spacious with traditional wooden kerala massage beds and the therapists are very professional and creating a peaceful atmosphere. After 2 weeks of treatment we felt very relaxed. We thank the owners Isabella and Gianni for creating that peaceful place and not giving up the every day effort to make guests feel at home in that little paradise."

" This small and very friendly ayurveda resort is build away from the crowd, on a cliff surplombing the ocean and therefore the view is just amasing. The rooms in the villas are very confortable, big picture windows, very cleaned, lot of space, private little terrace, huge and modern bathroom with rain shower. The very good threatments are given in rooms very cleaned too, no mould walls like I saw in some other resorts. Doc Baiju, responsible for the therapist team, worked several years in Switzerland so he understands very well european concerns. The place is owned by an european couple, so they also understand very well the need of comfort and hygienic standard of the european guests. They have high ecological concern and therefore many things in the resort are made with this aim, like solar pannels, biogaz with the waste or recyclingwaste. They have their own plantation for organic vegetables. BRAVO to the cook, the food is just EXCELLENT. The place has opened in October 2012, I stayed there for 8 weeks and had a very good time."

"We had a great time Ananda Lakshmi. The staffs were very courteous, the rooms were very clean and spotless. Overall the setting of the place calms your mind and aesthetically pleasing. The place and the rooms looked exactly as shown in their website. Staffs were very accommodative and provided us an extra cot (not a rollaway mattress) as we were a family of 4. It is located on a cliff, the view from the resort is such a treat to the eyes. It is a bit on the expensive side, we could negotiate as it was their off peak season. The food was very tasty and they made arrangements to give us our coffee early. The chef Mr Vijesh and team never made us wait. Mr Alex quickly responded. The location is little tricky and if you are driving on your own, you will need little patience. Without GPS we would have not reached the place. It is about 40mins from Trivandrum. We drove from Coimbatore, so it was very tiring. For a true Kerala experience and if you don't mind the little tiring journey, it's worth a visit."
