  • During this retreat we will explore both the modern approach to Hatha Yoga, whilst also being exposed to the historical elements of Hatha yoga through the theory and guided practice of Shatkarmas (cleansing techniques). These practices restore your physical system and lighten the body and mind; leaving you feeling revitalized with a set of practices to take away and integrate into your daily life.

    Lodging will be in standard shared rooms. However, limited prvate rooms are also available.

    Beginners to yoga will get an introduction to yoga postures, breathing practices and relaxation techniques, while the more experienced will be guided in how to deepen their practice. All participants get to experience the wider range of yogic tools available to support you moving forward in your life.

    Anahata Yoga Retreat is located in beautiful Golden Bay, New Zealand, in the northwest part of the South Island. It is situated 640 meters (2000 feet.) above sea level, at an idyllic spot called Bird's Clearing, on the outskirts of the Abel Tasman National Park. The closest town is Takaka. The two closest airports are Takaka (limited service) link and Nelson. The 13 kilometers road up to Anahata is unsealed and crosses several small fords.

    Food nourishes us and provides our physical body with the energy it needs to go about its daily activities. All meals at Anahata are vegetarian - simple, nutritious and satisfying. Much of the organic food is sourced from local growers or picked fresh from our garden, which is developed along permaculture design principles.

    Driving directions from Nelson

    • From Nelson, which is the main city in the north part of the South Island, travel west through the town of Motueka. Note that there are no petrol stations available between Motueka and Takaka, so best to fill up in Motueka.
    • After crossing the Takaka Hill from Nelson, you will drive towards and into Takaka.
    • Turn right immediately past the Visitors Centre.
    • Follow the road to the roundabout and turn right.
    • Drive towards Pohara Beach for about 10 minutes. The road curves on a big right and then a big left. You will pass Motupipi School (on left).
    • Take the next turn right at the Clifton crossroads. You will pass a big wooden giraffe type creature and then turn right at the T junction.
    • Follow this road to the next T-junction and turn left continuing on Clifton Road. As you turn you will see an orange "Anahata Retreat" sign. You will come to a gravel road and a sign saying Bird Road.
    • Follow the gravel road (Bird Road) up to the top of the mountain (7 kilometers). You will notice a sign part way up the hill with several family names on it. This is a private driveway / road to their house.
    • Continue on past this drive. There are some shallow fords and various gates. Please leave the gates as you find them (closed if closed). When you are half way up you will come to 2 gates side-by-side.
    • Go through the left gate (not the one going down the hill to the farm).
    • When you arrive at the top after approximately 30 minutes driving you will see a little sign on the other side of the top gate to the right that says Abel Tasman - Wainui Hut.
    • Go through this gate and follow the same gravel road heading a little left. On your left (a hundred metres or so) you will see a row of big Pine Trees, a house and some gardens. There is an ANAHATA sign on the fence to the right of the gate. You have arrived. Welcome to Anahata Yoga Retreat.
    • Park outside and walk through the Anahata gate to the office (in front of and attached to the building you see).

    Arrival by airplane

    There is an airport in Nelson (NSN), and there is a small airfield in Takaka (NZTK). Nelson is the main national airport for the region. The Nelson Airport is about a 2 hour drive from Takaka.

      "I stayed at Anahata for nearly 3 month as a karma yogi... As a newy to yoga I'm so glad that I chose this place as my yoga starting point, as it teaches you, in my opinion, still the real and traditional yoga. Your days start early and are fully planned and even sometimes you have to do things you don't really like, at the end you see that it is all part of the bigger picture and part of your personal growth. Anahata is located on top of a hill with stunning views over Golden Bay, a very beautiful location not just to watch the sunrise or sunset but also to take some walks. Accommodation is basic but has all you need and three delicious vegetarian meals are served a day. I loved my time up there and experienced the most magical and unforgettable NYE of my life. Thanks everyone for making my stay so wonderful. Om Om Om!"

This place has a great staff to take care of guests, huts that u will love. The only thing i missed is Indian food. Since i dont eat european food, i rarely found Indian food. Rest, don't dare to skip this place."

      "You feel a little lost in it all at first, especially when everyone around you knows exactly how to say, chant, sing, and remember all these complicated strings of letters that make no sense to a brain that's been unexposed to them before and they are so strong in their conviction to the yogic path. Not just the posture yoga that we all know from the gym or yoga studio we attend. The life of simplicity and dedication to a higher power and its presence everywhere. For a non-religious person like me, it feels like a lot to comprehend and accept.
