Permaculture’ is an integrated land use design methodology based on ecological principles, with practical application from sustainable household to eco-nation to global restoration. This retreat combines this amazing course with an intimate introduction to a yogic lifestyle. As a work in progress, all who comes contribute to the continuing development of this sacred space, whilst learning valuable life skills for the health and wellbeing of individuals, communities, and society as a whole.
A range of lodging options are available from shared rooms to a private straw bale roundhouse with stunning views of Golden Bay. Tent sites and camping are also available.
This course is the standard residential International Permaculture Design Certificate curriculum, taught in an integrated hands-on way, culminating in a comprehensive land-use design project.
Yoga, deep relaxation and meditation sessions will be woven into the daily schedule bringing you a unique course combining inner ecology (yoga) with the outer ecology (Permaculture).
This 16-day course includes practical skill-building activities, mini-design exercises, and visits to inspirational properties that demonstrate Permaculture in practice.
It takes place in an intentional eco yoga community and incorporates the exploration of ”Deep Ecology”, the connection to nature and element themed yoga practices aimed at enhancing personal sustainability that extends out into the wider community.
Upon completion, a Permaculture Design Certificate will be issued by the Institute of Earthcare Education Aotearoa.
Swami Karma Karuna specializes in women’s health. By blending yogic lifestyle and sannyasa tradition with motherhood, she brings a unique and practical approach, inspiring the integration of yogic principles into everyday activities. A founding member and director of Anahata Yoga Retreat, she is an engaging, intuitive yoga teacher with more than 25 years of training and experience. She also specializes in therapeutic applications of yoga, yoga Nidra relaxation, and prank practices and shares in a simple and practical way, inspiring people to access and apply yogic practices in their own lives.
Sannyasin came to yoga because of health reasons and the practical and scientific methods of this style of yoga immediately made a strong impression. He is a living example of how health can be transformed through yoga and shares his interests in yogic lifestyle, diet and nutrition, pranayama, meditation, mantra, and kirtan.
Robina McCurdy is the founder of the Institute of Earthcare Education Aotearoa, co-founder of Tui Land Trust and Community in Golden Bay, New Zealand, and pioneer of the S.E.E.D. (Schools Environmental Education and Development) program in South Africa and Brazil. She has also been engaged in community development, organic growing, permaculture design, and tutoring on a global scale for the past 25 years.
Guenther Andraschko is an experienced workshop facilitator and permaculture and landscape designer. He has over 25 years experience in designing and creating unique outdoor environments utilizing permaculture principles, both in New Zealand and Australia and in a diversity of environments. He brings a wealth of practical knowledge and experience and enjoys supporting others to realize their own permaculture projects and aspirations.
Sannyasi Priyadhara embarked on a yogic path of self transformation in her youth, which eventually led her to discover a sustainable way of living through Permaculture and Yoga. In a personal quest to deepen her experience and understanding, she spent a number of years living under the guidance of her teacher in a remote part of India, imbibing the teachings of Yoga as a practical science and a way of life, in the spirit of sannyasa, selfless service and dedication. Anahata Yoga Retreat is located in beautiful Golden Bay, New Zealand, in the northwest part of the South Island. It is situated 640 meters above sea level, at an idyllic spot called Bird's Clearing, overlooking Golden Bay and borders the Abel Tasman National Park. The closest town is Takaka.

All meals provided are vegetarian - simple, yet nutritious and satisfying. Much of the organic food is sourced from local growers or picked fresh from the garden, which is developed along with permaculture design principles.
Some special dietary requirements for food allergies can be catered to with prior advance notice. Anahata Yoga Retreat can cater to vegan and gluten free requirements, but for other required specialty foods or snacks, you may wish to bring your own supply. If you have special dietary requirements, please advise upon booking.

Receive personal guidance from the resident swamis / teachers. During this yoga retreat, you can book private sessions for an extra cost. Swami Karma Karuna works therapeutically with people to develop a personalized yoga program and to address mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs and imbalances.
