A sliver of a coastal state in India's deep south, Kerala is shaped by its layered landscape which is almost 600 kilometers of glorious Arabian Sea coast and beaches; a languid network of glistening backwaters; and the spice and tea-covered hills of the Western Ghats. Just setting foot on this swathe of soul-quenching, palm-shaded green will slow your sub continental stride to a blissed-out amble. Kerala is a world away from the frenzy of elsewhere, as if India had passed through the looking glass and become an altogether more laid-back place.

"I loved my experience at Amrutham. The grounds are spectacular, nothing is too much for the staff, the food is delicious, the Ayurvedic treatments with Suteesh and his team make you feel like a new person and on top of that I successfully became a yoga teacher. I highly recommend Amrutham if you are looking to study yoga teaching and would like to be in a small group, you're after some cleansing Ayurvedic treatments or just a nice break in a beautiful tropical destination."

"The place is fantastic amazing. Tranquil. A perfect place to learn. Subash was a brilliant Yoga teacher. Firm but kind and super knowledgeable. A complete professional, in all aspects of learning it was very good, the care and attention to make every detail of this course perfect. Also, there is very small classes, which helped me as I have learning difficulties. The rooms tidy and always kept clean. The restaurant at the top of the house surrounded by the treetops was breathtaking. It was a pleasure to eat there. The food was faultless. Being on the yoga teacher training course the food had to be a certain way, it was so tasty, I didn't miss fish or meat or dairy produce. You could also have massages, the best massages that left you feeling refreshed and uplifted. Rajesh the waiter was so helpful kind and caring. He always had a smile on his face. It was a pleasure to help him with his English. All the staff. The cooks and the housekeeping staff and the manager could not be more helpful. It was like home from home. The beach was a 20 minute walk away which is also lovely for your day off which was a Tuesday."

"A very enjoyable aspect of the Amrutham Ayurvedic Village Resort is its location in a woody but inhabited area. It was wonderful to be able to sit in the large second floor restaurant area at canopy height and view the foliage and bird life around. We preferred to avoid the friendly but ever present stalls and restaurants of Korrallam beach which is is only a 10-minute rickshaw ride away. The staff were exceptionally helpful and went out of their way to accommodate every need in a homey, secure and intimate environment. I enjoyed the lovely swimming pool. The rooms are large and most are non air conditioned - which we preferred. The beds are quite hard but we became used to it . The food was very good and less spicy hot than we had found elsewhere. Daily yoga and meditation classes are led by Subash, who has a wonderfully gentle manner for both beginners and advanced students .It was also great fun to be taken to various temples and sights in his motor rickshaw between classes. They even organized a tabla drum demonstration for me!We went as relative Yoga beginners to develop our abilities. It is possible to undergo Teacher training, and Ayurvedic Relaxation treatments were available on a daily or package basis. I can recommend Amruthram to single travellers and would go again."

"An amazing month at Amrutham Ayurvedic Village Resort, where I lived surrounded by beautiful friends in a homey location. Everything was perfect: the adorable staff (a second family) excellent food, cleanliness everywhere, support from each and every person from the management and personnel, relaxing ayurvedic massages etc.. But the best was our teacher Subhash , excellent technique, amazing voice, beautiful spirit, wonderful energy spiced with much humor. I wouldn't have dreamed of a better place for my yoga teacher training course!"

"I came here for my 200 hour, four-week long yoga teacher training course and I am so happy that I did. Of course there are many many places to do yoga teacher training in Kerala, but Amrutham is somewhere special. There are only eight rooms here so that limits the number of people who can participate in the course or stay at the hotel at any one time and I think this is really good as it means you get a much more personal experience and after a couple of weeks everyone here starts to feel like a family. There were only four people on my course and this was wonderful. There is more than one yoga teacher here but we had Subhash and I cannot recommend him highly enough. He personifies everything you would ever wish for in a yoga teacher and is the kind of inspirational person that I think everyone dreams of meeting when they decide to come and 'find themselves' in India. He radiates positive energy which inspires you to try your best and challenge yourself. He is serious about yoga and has such a wealth of knowledge which shines through but he is also lighthearted and warm and is flexible to the needs of different students. I could not have asked for more. This is not a polished, luxury resort...although there are elements of luxury here, it has a mixture of tropical rustic and classic colonial era vibes with big high ceiling rooms among a tropical garden with a swimming pool and a lovely rooftop dining area overlooking the palm trees. The staff here will go out of their way to help you and I was genuinely upset to say goodbye to some of them. Particular praise to Rajesh, the waiter who has to be one of the nicest human beings on the planet and who was one of the reasons I loved the place as much as I did. We had amazing, delicious, healthy food here every day but our group had various special requests, throughout our stay, and Rajesh was so patient and accommodating of all of them. The ladies who clean the rooms are also so lovely and friendly and add little touches to make your stay special. Also Sateesh is another person here who was super helpful to us when we had all the money problems caused by the demonetization of the notes while we were there. And when there was some sickness and injury in our group, AK and Vandana went out of there way to ensure we were looked after. Sometimes it takes a confusingly long time to get information from the management about certain things and this can be a little frustrating at times and also the beds are pretty hard and there needs to be a wall built in the yoga area for beginners or those practicing inversions but these are the only things I can think of which could be improved. Overall the place has so much charm and friendliness that I found it to be perfect for what I needed and I would not hesitate to come back again."

"Amrutham is a lovely little gem close to Kovalam beach. It's somewhere between a home-stay and a hotel, as it's a small eight-room property run by local staff, all village men and women who make your stay really warm and comfortable. I stayed in a ground floor pool-facing room which I would absolutely recommend over the upstairs air conditioned rooms. You won't need air conditioned in the winter and the pool is always just a few steps away! I would absolutely recommend it for their amazing ayuverdic treatments, delicious home cooked food, and pool filled with fresh well water. The room is comfortable and basic, but do carry your own toiletries as they don't provide anything apart from toilet paper. I went there exhausted from city life and got just the relaxing, quiet break I wanted. I just floated from massage to swim to yoga and sometimes took off to the beach. Overall, a wonderful wonderful experience."

"Visited this place after staying in a villa in nearby Kovalam. The treatments were some of the best we have had during our travels in India. The location is quite difficult to find, however this adds to the overall feel and experience of the place. Perhaps this is one of Kerala's unknown treasures. Let's hope it remains this way!"

"I visited Amrutham for a four-week intensive Yoga teacher training course earlier this year and what an experience! This is a delayed post but I want to express just how fantastic the individuals at this resort really were to me during my stay."

"I learned so much, not only about yoga and meditation, but also about the Indian culture and people. The people at Amrutham are so welcoming and nice and nothing is too much trouble. Firstly, Subash is an excellent yoga teacher and managed to develop me from being over muscled and under flexible oaf into a much leaner more flexible and more healthy person - he explains everything really well with a lot of insight and has an excellent teaching style. Suresh, the driver, had the best English there and we shared a common love of sports, nowhere we needed to go was ever too much trouble and he took us on some long journeys always with smiles, jokes and good conversation."

"Rajesh has to be the most friendly and attentive waiter I've ever met, he served our meals every day and even though his English was basic he would make himself understood through sheer good will and eventually hugs. Sadeesh was in charge of the ayuverdic massages and after being persuaded I could not get enough of them - what an experience, highly recommend the massages, so relaxing! Sadeesh in particular showed incredible attentiveness to me, as at one point I had a medical procedure done, the staff all helped my arrangements for this but I have to mention that Sadeesh and Suresh did not leave my side for the entire time which was absolutely heart warming! They also made some special arrangements for me during my stay that just blew me away as it was above and beyond. All the rest of the staff were fantastic too from the ladies who kept the place spotless and cooked delicious meals to the management and the reservations - all so helpful. Back to the yoga and it was great to learn and develop my health and flexibility alongside meditation and I became so much more flexible while I was there and confident enough to teach classes, the area is beautiful and I cannot recommend it enough, if you love yoga or are simply looking for a relaxing retreat then you have to try this place!!!!"

The best part of course was my teacher Subash Krishna. I could not have dreamed up a better teacher myself. He is so knowledgeable and kind. Everyday he inspired me to push myself more and more. A wise, gem of a human whom I will never forget. I could not recommend this place more if you are thinking of doing your course here, go for it!"

"I spent a month here and followed the teacher training course. What a wonderful experience! This changed my life. I was a night bird and could not get up on the morning. Now I am an early bird and go to bed early. One month of yoga training is very intense and we got to learn so many postures. Upon arrival I was just a yoga practitioner for 7 years. Ever since I am doing my yoga almost every morning and I managed to start giving a class in my neighborhood. One month was not that easy for my body. I went through a terrible lumbago which killed me for a week. Sadeesh gave me massage every day for 2 hours. Each time I felt like having a new body, and could fulfill some of my yoga. After a week, I completed again my full class and ever since my back pain is not a problem anymore. I gained incredible flexibility, power in my asanas. Also I learned how to meditate in Amrutham, without so many explanation but with daily guidance such as a candle, mantras, which step by step lead you to fill meditation, discovering your way to it. Our teacher Das was fantastic and very flexible with us. He gave us confidence in our asanas. Thanks to him I now can fulfill Mayurasana, despite thinking that I would never make it. It took me one month to do Shirsasana without a wall, and now back home I am excited to learn all those crazy poses like dolphin, etc... or reverse tree pose. I have no fear anymore to fall, as I also learned how to fall without hurting me. Regarding accommodation, fantastic! Great large rooms with all necessary amenities, incredible service. Staff is absolutely adorable. I miss their constant smile, living in France where smile is not so common. Radesh kept being at our service during meals and kept feeding us with wonderful food cooked by the kitchen staff, every day different, colorful and so tasty. I have become a full vegetarian now and enjoy it. What I appreciated even more was to be in a very rural neighborhood. The first week was nothing but temple songs all day long because they were celebrating an important religious event. Then, music was replaced by songs of so many birds. I discovered that there is no such as silence in nature. Birds, wind, rain, these sounds are constant but they are calming the soul, and the panorama of the restaurant has the most breathtaking view over this. This was Amrutham Gamaya and I would come back with no hesitation and maybe I will!"

"Let me first start with the classical "I never write reviews, but this place deserves it!" I also would like to explain my style of traveling as I believe it will help you understand my review better. I have been around the world as I traveled the last 20 years of my life in every corner on this earth. From known travel destination to hidden places no tourist ever went to. Whatever it was... months of traveling or just few days. To explore all what this world has to offer in-depth was always my goal. Whatever it was backpacking or sometimes a more comfortable luxury trip, the goal never changed. Usually when I travel I would love to connect with the locals and their culture. Which means, I do appreciate all the services a hotel/resort can provide, yet the atmosphere provided by its staff is for me the top of the list. Now that's said, visiting a retreat as this one, it's even more important as the goal here is to unwind and gain the break needed of much stressed life. And yes I found what I was seeking. From the very first second I got picked up by their driver, I felt comfortable. A nice smile and a warm welcome. Then as I arrived, I was greeted by the manger who sat with me to ask me about my requirement and my expectations. That alone made me feel very welcomed and in the right hands. For the next seven days I felt their warmth more and more. They were very eager to help and serve me. I also understood that the staff comes from the nearby village. This make them already a family-like to each other. You can feel it in the way they host you. As I always say, if the staff is treated well, they will spread it back to the guests, and I definitely felt it. The food is very delicious. Matter of fact I never experience such variety of vegetarian food as I did here. It also applies to the Ayurvedic treatment. As they were very keen in doing it the best way that suites my need. Not only me, but other guests confirmed that comparing to other places, this one is very good. As for the yoga, I didn't expect it to be that good. When I arrived, there were two teachers/instructors. Four guests were doing the four weeks yoga teacher class, and my teacher was giving me and another guest another class. From those four other guests, who were yoga experts, I heard only good things. Their teacher was very genuine, and tried very hard to serve each one's different character. He was very serious about the meaning and philosophy of yoga, and very happy to share his knowledge as much as possible. Both in practical, and theory classes. My teacher was older, and have a very unique teaching style. He has the wiser, old school, more strict teaching techniques. As he will not correct your pose by talking too much. He would very quietly understand your skills and limitation, and day by day push you to a comfortable yet touching the edge of your ability. This will make you slowly change your pose to correctness by your own. I found this an eye opening technique that showed me the true meaning of yoga. The quality of self observation. I got more knowledge from his NOT correcting than from many words of explanation modern teachers use to do. In those seven days I learned a lot from him. Maybe beyond body movement. You need to be open to read between the lines. I just came back from there, and I am already planning to visit again next year. I will definitely do my four weeks yoga teaching class in this unique place, as there is something profound about the quality of having it in such a quite and small place. Away from main stream Ashrams and schools. I already started sharing my experience with friends and family, as I know how we are all stuck in our busy lifestyle. Whatever Ayurvedic treatment or yoga you desire, this is the place to go. Finally if I want to sumarise it in short... this is NOT a spa luxury place with staff serving your over the top impossible touristic requirement. It's more a warmhearted family who will welcome you with a smile which represents the true Kerala culture. And they would be very happy if you notice it the way it is."

"If you want to forget your stressing life, to relax in the middle of the jungle, to take part in the challenging yoga classes (two hours a day) but "easy" after four days, to eat very tasty Indian meals (vegetables only, with coconut), to have fabulous Ayurvedic massages; different everyday, following the doctor's prescription, to lay down on the very clean beach (five minutes from the hotel with the tuk-tuk), to swim in clear sea water, to drink delicious big fresh juices whenever you want, to practice powerful meditation in the evening, to sleep like a baby in a large comfortable bed, then AMRUTHAM IS YOUR PLACE TO STAY! Thank you so much to all the very dedicated staff who made us feel like we were princesses! We will go again to Amrutham of course ASAP! "The retreat looks identical to the photographs on the website, it's very calm, serene, set right in the jungle so all the can hear is wildlife, beautiful setting. The house is fantastic, very clean, the house staff, Rajesh and Mr Manikantan were incredibly accommodating and brought me anything I needed whenever I wanted! Constant supply of delicious teas, fruits, banana chips. Breakfast was delicious and all freshly made, same as dinner. They have a beautiful open air seating area for meals on the top floor of the house. The yoga room is bright and airy and Soobash is a great teacher, a very calm man who makes you feel instantly calmer in his presence. The pool area was beautiful and the massage area was great, had a lovely Indian head massage by the lady in there. I was a bit out of season so it was quiet and rained so didn't get chance to use the pool. It's about a 40 minute walk to Kovalum beach which is a typical beach, clean though and with lots of gift shops.Left feeling incredibly relaxed and restored. Two thumbs up, was sad to leave the place everyone was lovely. Goodbye Amrutham and thanks for having me!"

"An amazing stay here in a vibrant jungle setting on an Ayurveda/yoga package. It is set in a beautiful village location but only 10/15 minutes from the beach. The staff are brilliant and cannot do enough for you!The Ayurvedic treatments were also great the therapists were very kind and provided a relaxing, healing and spiritual experience. The outside woven treatment hut is lovely! The yoga teacher was excellent and guided us through pranayama, meditation and both challenging and relaxing asanas. This was our favourite part of the retreat with a great overall practice from a kind and knowledgeable teacher. We were taken out to see some temples, the beach, the town, a trip to the rocks to meditate and to do some walking meditation. The food was superb 3 meals a day. We chose Indian food, we was given the choice of a more western breakfast, however we declined as the Indian food is some of the best food we have ever had! Beautiful vegetarian food, amazing presentation and flavours! If you are looking for a relaxing stay in a spiritual place then this is perfect! A special thank you to Ragesh for being a wonderful server. We very much enjoyed speaking to him to help him improve his English. The vast array of wildlife is amazing to sit and watch from the restaurant where you are just above the tree top canopy. We embraced our magical week with the desire to be close to nature. I have never felt better on a retreat! Thank you so much to all the staff we hope to see you again someday!"

"Wonderful experience! I love my time at Amrutham. I was planning to stay only for a few nights and ended up staying for one week. I wish I could have stayed longer but my holidays were coming to an end. I loved it!!! What a wonderful place, beautiful house, incredible surroundings, but the highlight was the people. Dr Nimi, Sree, Ayith, Sudhakar and every single person made my stay extremely special. They looked after me and it felt like I was part of a family. The location is fantastic as is settled in a quiet village surrounded by palm trees, beautiful settings, very peaceful and natural. The Ayurvedic consultation with Dr Nimi was very exhaustive and they helped me a lot with some health issues. I had a follow up every day and just in a week I felt my overall health improved a lot. The treatments are the best I had in all India and there is a very good communication between the all the people involved and even the food is cooked accordingly to your health needs and is absolutely delicious and healthy. The treatment room was clean and adequate and the ladies giving the treatments were very gentle, professional and caring. Meditation and yoga classes were very personalised. Sree and Ayith are amazing teachers and they teach from the heart. Even though I'm at a beginner level, my practice improved so much in only one week and manage to understand more about my breathing which I was finding very difficult to do before. I can keep going on and on about the wonders of Amrutham. I can't wait to come back and I highly recommend it. Having the chance to have visited Amrutham, feels as a very special gift for the body, the mind and the soul! A big, big thank to everyone!"

"We traveled through Kerala for three weeks staying at several different hotels all in a similar price range and this was by far the best. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the food was the best we had during our whole trip and the hotel was just perfect. I would definitely like to return and stay for longer. Everything about the hotel is just right - beautiful big, comfortable rooms which are spotlessly clean, delicious food, fantastic value for money, ideal location - close to the beach (10 minutes by moto-taxi) but tucked away in a lovely little quiet village. I can't recommend highly enough. "
