Whitewater difficulty rating

The Snake River through Hells Canyon is rated class III to IV whitewater. It is a large volume river with drop-pool style rapids, meaning a rapid is followed by a large pool of calm water. This section consists of mostly class III rapids with a few class IV.

Many of these rapids are described as roller-coaster waves creating a fun and enjoyable ride appropriate for most physical abilities, including children ages seven and up. Many boat landings are rocky and require walking varied distances on uneven terrain. Once at camp, the terrain is usually open and forgiving. All hiking is optional and easy to moderate difficulty.

Boats available

Inflatable kayaks

Inflatable kayaks hold one or two people right above the river. They are great for exploring on flat water or enjoying an adventurous ride through rapids. These boats can be inflated or deflated and stored on a bigger raft. The boat fits one to two people with no guide.

Oar boats

Oar boats are the most comfortable and stable boat. It’s a 16 to18 feet inflatable raft controlled by a guide in the middle of the boat with two large oars. It’s ideal for picture taking, relaxing and enjoying the ride. These boats are great for everyone, and younger kids and older adults tend to really like them. The boat fits two to six people with a guide.

Paddle boats

Paddle boats are in the action. Each person is equipped with a paddle to navigate down the river with the help of a guide located in the back of the boat. These inflatable rafts are slightly smaller than the oar boats and usually have a splashier more jam-packed ride. They are great for friends or family looking for an adventure. The boat fits four to eight people with a guide.

Evening before departure

Stay in the Cambridge, identify the area and you’ll have a pre-trip meeting with appetizers in the rafting store to provide dry bags for packing and answer any last minute questions.

Day 1

The bus leaves early in the morning for a scenic drive along several reservoirs on the Snake River. You will arrive at the Hells Canyon Dam and prepare to begin your yoga adventure. The first day starts off with a bang with several class II to III rapids.

Lunch is served riverside usually with an option for a short hike, yoga class, or time to relax, or swim.

After lunch, the class IV whitewater rapids are fun, big and splashy. In the afternoon, boats pull into camp where tents will be ready and waiting. Relaxing in camp, swimming, hiking and playing beach games is encouraged at camp. After play, there’ll be time for yoga and then a delicious gourmet meal is prepared from the river kitchen: appetizers, delicious entrées, freshly baked Dutch oven bread, and decadent desserts.

Day 2 to 3

After sleeping under the stars, you’ll wake for more yoga time before the sun crests the deep canyon walls. Coffee and breakfast will soon follow. Bags will be packed and boats will be boarded. Phenomenal whitewater follows with calm swimming pools, rich history, tasty food, and fun.

This is when the magic of a river trip happens: no clocks, no cell phones, no computers; just you, the group and your beautiful surroundings. The evening will be similar to the previous night at a camp further down the river.

Day 4

You will arrive at the take-out in the early afternoon and head back to civilization. You can plan on arriving back to Cambridge around 7:00 p.m. If you have any time constrictions, please inform America's Rafting Co know when you book the trip and they can adjust accordingly.

Note for booking departing flights after the trip

There’s a lot of travel time from the river on the last day. America's Rafting Co does not recommend flying out on the final day of a river trip.
