Driving directions from San Jose or Juan Santamaria Airport (old road)

  • From San Jose or Juan Santamaria Airport, there are two ways to go. The new highway cuts off about 15 minutes but does involve a dirt road for about 15 minutes of the journey.
  • Directions for the slower, meandering but paved all the way road
  • Take the road to Ciudad Colon. Once you're in Ciudad Colon, look out for a sign saying "no hay paso" that means you're going on to a one way street.
  • Instead turn right at the gas station and then left at the next street and you will see a green AmaTierra sign up high (on a car wash building) stating you are 35 km from the Hotel.
  • Go to the top of the hill through the town of Cuidad Colon and turn left before the dirt road.
  • You will see a University of La Paz (Peace) sign on the left. Make sure you follow the road out of town (do not turn right to the U. of Peace), but veer right towards Puriscal and Turubari Park.
  • After about 20 minutes, you will arrive in Puriscal.
  • About 300 meters past the gas station on the right, you will see a sign for Turrubaris/Orotina/Jaco - turn left in front of the Red Cross/Ice building.
  • Follow about 3 blocks past the church, and just after the stop light you will see a white sign that will say Turrubaris/Orotina/Jaco then you must turn right after the sign
  • Then, you will follow the signs to Amatierra/Turubari Park. The Hotel is located 17KM or 20 minutes once you leave Puriscal.
  • We are on the right side of the road 2 k,m before San Pablo and you will see several Green AmaTierra signs to let you know you are close. Always know that if you follow the signs to Turrubari Park that you are on the right track.
  • It is easy to find and the road is paved the entire way - simply look for the long bamboo fence and wooden gate. If the gate is closed, just honk and the guard will open the gate.

Driving directions from San Jose or Juan Santamaria Airport (new highway)

  • Start out the same way as above, from the airport.
  • Once you pass Escazu, Outback, and the Forum, you will get to where you need to make a decision to go toward Ciudad Colon, or towards Guacima and Orotina. You can choose to go straight ahead on the New Highway to Orotina, which is a toll road. You will need colones (though they do make change for dollars, don't worry).
  • Go straight on this road, past 2 tolls, the last one is Atenas. Past Pan de Azucar too, exit at Escobal.
  • At the top of the exit, turn left, then right at the end, onto the frontage road. Follow this to its end (about 1.2 km) and turn left.
  • You stay on this little dirt road for about 15 minutes, over a 1 lane bridge, until you eventually get to a town called San Pablo, with a town square on the left.
  • Go straight past the town about 2-3 blocks and you'll see Soda Francini on the right. Turn left there, toward Puriscal.
  • AmaTierra will be on your left side about 1 km up the road.

Arrival by airplane

You will need to fly to Juan Santamaria International Airport. Please contact the organizer to arrange for your complimentary airport transfer. They have been working with the same private driver for 10 years, so it is really safe.

"I fell in love with AmaTierra, Jill and Bob, the staff, and the wonderful group of people I shared my stay with. I have never felt so at peace, and more so I felt incredibly safe as a woman traveling solo to a foreign country. The food was as delicious as it was beautiful. I took several day trips outside the resort- to the Paos volcano, Waterfalls, Carara National Park, the Pacific coast in Jaco, and ziplining in Turu ba ri. The experience healed my soul. I would do this trip all over again in a heartbeat! "

    "Peace. Tranquility. AmaTierra."

"I spent 6 days at AmaTierra on a yoga/wellness retreat and it was far beyond my expectations. I decided to go on this trip alone because I wanted to quiet my mind and free myself from every day distractions. I went to explore within and find a connection to my spiritual or higher self, and maybe have a few conversations with God. AmaTierra provided the facilities to do just that and more. "

"The beautiful yoga studio with its stunning view of the Costa Rican mountains is breath-taking. There is a hammock in the corner, which is perfect for a nice cool-down after a swim in the pool or a walk on the trails. Meditation is after sunset, so the studio is subtly illuminated with candlelight. "

"The cabinas are quaint and comfortable. They each have their own private porch and entry-way. I really appreciated the space and privacy between cabinas, because I was able to practice my guitar out on the porch without feeling like I might be disturbing someone."

"Jill and Bob were very warm and welcoming, as was the rest of the team. Their staff prepared the most healthy and delicious meals. They served fresh organic fruits and vegetables, delicious soups and salads, and delectable dinners. I always left the table feeling full and satisfied. "

"What I didn’t expect was to find such a peaceful flow of energy that was constantly changing at AmaTierra. This was particularly due to the different dynamics of guests coming and going. What I loved about this experience was that I was on my own retreat. I did not start with a group of people that arrived on the same day to participate in the same retreat. It was very much an individual journey in which you would collide with others’ journey every now and then, most often at meal times. Everyone would come together to break bread and one evening we sang songs while Jill sang and played the piano. It was lovely. "

"My only disappointment is that I had to leave. I could have easily stayed another week, if not longer. Needless to say, I will definitely be back! "

"In seeking a space of positive restoration for myself and my mother, Pamela Templin, I looked for a smaller, quieter wellness experience which would also be eco-sensitive. What I found at AmaTierra absolutely met these needs but provided my mom and I both so much more. I was delighted by the privacy and peacefulness of our clean and comfortable room that led to views of the forest all around. The birds, frogs, trees and flowers all around the rooms, the main building and the yoga pavilion just delighted the senses at every turn. Deeply breathing in the clean mountain air, feeling the soft movement of the wind through the studio, having the yoga and meditation experiences harmonized with the sounds of rain, occasional thunder, insect and frog song, birds calling, and the feeling the energy of the earth under our bodies all led to truly one-of-a-kind experiences. I felt so cared for at each meal with delicious food and being a foodie, this really was an important part of my enjoying my time with AmaTierra. The cookbook came home with me as a gustatory souvenir! All of these things are important but none more so than the people that support AmaTierra. I really enjoyed all of the people that we met that cared for us there at the resort and on our off-campus excursions, but Bob and Jill now feel like extended family. My mom and I will absolutely be going back to refill our "zen buckets."

"My mother and I were absolutely delighted with our experience with Ama Tierra. Just up the mountain side from the quaint town of San Pablo the view of the valley, the temperate forest covering the hills and the clouds rolling in/out each day really never got old. We both personally enjoyed the small number of guests that were there at one time allowing for more personal attention with the restorative yoga classes as well as the opportunity to get to know new friends better over our communal meals. I cannot say enough about the food wonderful, healthy, flavorful. I did buy Jills cookbook to allow me to keep eating some of my favorite meals that were prepared. Bob did a super job of making sure that any excursions we went on off campus were set up with no hassle and the drivers were genuinely terrific guys. I think the equine therapy that we did with their friends Marsh and Mark ended up being one of the highlights of our trip."

"This was my forth time to Costa Rica and I absolutely intend to go back to AmaTierra again likely with my mother so we can both continue to enjoy the positive space and friendships that we made on this trip."

"And thank you for your wonderful website, Leslie! Such a great resource for all types of yogis. Namaste." website, edited

"This is the experience of a lifetime - one of those "magical" places so rare in our world today - where pure Nature embraces you with unforgettable Beauty and Life Spirit. Opening your eyes on the first morning after a tranquil night when cicadas, frogs and forest singers serenaded you to sleep, the soft light of dawn in the tropics awakens you gently to the sight of leaves dancing on a light breeze and sounds of exotic birdsong. As the sun lazily rises, you ascend steps flanked by vibrant flowering plants to the teak-floored thatched Yoga platform set high up on this mountainside with a breathtaking view of the valley below. The food here is delicious and healthy, much of it grown in their gardens, the eggs from their own chickens, coffee from a neighbor's "finca." Special diets are accommodated, including detox regimens. A variety of day excursions are available - my daughter and I went horseback riding in a rainforest, visited a Butterfly Garden, enjoyed a day trip to tour Carera National Park (where we sighted an Anteater high up in the canopy, a Howler Monkey, Coati, and many gorgeous exotic and wintering birds - the biodiversity here is unimaginable), an afternoon at the beach in Jaco, lunch at local "sodas" where the local food was fabulous, and, on our last day, an Equine Healing session. Each experience was well-planned, fun, interesting and far beyond our expectations. The owners, Bob and Jill Ruttenberg, interact with each guest to make sure their stay is relaxing, fun and tailored to their needs. Many visitors return - as my daughter and I will do, because we enjoyed feeling like family here, basking in the warmth and generosity of our hosts, the locals who provide services, and the other guests - as world travelers, we both agreed AmaTierra was the best choice we could have made for a vacation, healing retreat, and a bundle of wonderful experiences."

"We came to Amatierra first for our Triple H package the views were breathtaking and so beautiful I couldn't think of a better place to unwind after your wedding! We did yoga everyday and ate delicious healthy meals. Bob and Jill and all the other staff were so accommodating to all of our needs, if you have time try to do the waterfall tour! Jill has such a kind heart she practiced not only yoga with us but explained herself and the importance of the poses she put us in, her energy work was amazing she was quite the healer! Our driver Popo was so great he catered to our every need and we had great times laughing with him ! Thank you again can't wait to come back!"

"I was looking for a place to spend some much needed 'me' time for a week, travelled solo. This is the place! Delicious food, yoga every day, great spa services, and hosts Jill and Bob are unequalled in their attention to detail and to the comfort of their guests. Watch the toucans fly by while you dine outside with a breathtaking view of the mountains. Thanks to Amatierra for a great week of rest, rejuvenation, and relaxation. Absolutely exceeded my expectations. I came back feeling like a better version of me. So many great memories of my week. Thank you Jill and Bob."

"This incredible week changed my life! I returned home more focused and ready to make the changes I needed in my life, both physically and emotionally. I had the most peaceful and relaxing week where I had no responsibilities aside from my own desires and making sure I woke up in time for the amazing morning yoga! The food was delicious and healthy and I loved swimming in the pool overlooking the forrest, listening to John Coltrane as I was thinking of my son, who is named Coltrane. Now when is that ever going to happen again! Since I love music, I really appreciated that both Bob and Jill were music people and I so enjoyed getting to sing with Jill as she played piano. So talented! Speaking of Jill and talent, she is an incredible healer. I am so lucky to have had that week at Amatierra and am so grateful to have met Bob and Jill. Thank you!"

"Absolutely the most relaxing, peaceful, wonderful week. Was not sure how hot August would be in the Costa Rican mountains, but it was great! Had the whole resort to ourselves. Felt like we had rented a private villa with a full staff; which were so good to us. The meals were fresh and mealtime was marvelous and the views of the mountains on their terrace was breathtaking. Massage therapists on site were very good. Take sneakers and very casual clothes besides your yoga clothes for hiking the rain forest, zip lining, or horseback riding. All the day trips were great! Loved, loved the local waterfall trip. The accompanying taxi drivers escorted us to the waterfall safely and stayed with us on a day trip to beach. Felt very safe the whole time. Came home relaxed and rejuvenated. Have nothing negative to say. It was a perfect week!"

"I first heard about Amatierra through another Trip Advisor review, I was looking for the perfect place for my first solo trip oversees, it needed to be safe, and offer me the relaxation experience I was looking for. Amatierra did just that. Bob and Jill have created an incredible environment in the mountains of Costa Rica. After being picked up at the airport by the hilarious Juan, I was driven to my oasis. Diego, at reception, greeted me with a smile and showed me to my perfect, quaint "casita". It had everything I needed for my week-long stay- a nice big comfy bed, a sitting area with t.v, and even my own little private patio. My first night at Amatierra was perfect- a table set under the stars and the most amazing 3-course meal I could have asked for. My overall stay can only be described in one word: perfect. The daily yoga classes and meditation sessions were fantastic and opened my mind and heart- Jill taught me so much about yoga, meditating, and about myself. She has inspired me to continue my yoga practise here at home in Canada. While at Amatierra I indulged in a massage (the best I have ever had), an exfoliating scrub (which I left with baby-soft skin), and even a facial- all while listening to the sounds of nature. These services rivalled any and all other spa services I have experienced in my home country.I was the only guest for the first couple of days (as this is the rainy season in Costa Rica) which was actually fantastic- other guests arrived a few days into my stay and I made fast friends. We feasted together, practised yoga together, and enjoyed each others' company throughout our stays. I feel that this type of setting made it very easy to make new friends and we continue to stay in touch! Thank you Jill, Bob, Diego, Beth, Isabel, Cuco, Cato and all the wonderful staff at Amatierra for making me feel safe, happy, and like I was part of your family. I will definitely be back!"

"As a young female traveling alone looking for a relaxing and beautiful environment to experience Costa Rica and take some time to escape from the stress of work. I couldn't have picked a more idyllic location. Jill, bob and staff made me feel at home within an second of arriving late at night. The location and yoga pavilion are breathtaking and I have struggled to returning to practicing yoga in a studio! I cannot find fault, everything was organized and taken care of for me from activites and transportation. The food was wonderful, light and nutritious and the dining views spectacular. Jill's work, knowledge, and warm heart are truely remarkable and I'm so thankful for her help and guidance. My yoga practice and mediation have found a new inspiration and focus thanks to Tori and Jill. I highly recommend Amatierra to anyone whatever your age or background. Nature, wildlife, adventure, exprolation, peace, restoration, friendships, and a feast of deliciousness for mind, body, soul and palate can all be found here. I hope I get the chance to return again soon! Life changing! Thank you."

"After struggling for years to loose some weight, eat better foods and exercise, the Universe lead me to find a detox program in Costa Rica at AmaTierra retreat. Their 5-day program was more reasonably priced than all detox programs I found in the USA (airfare included). So, I treated myself for my 69th birthday with a trip there. I loved, loved, loved every minute at this lovely retreat set in the rainforest. Bob and Jill Ruttenberg made me feel like family from day one. Jill is absolutely one the most amazing women I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Her all-inclusive program heals body, soul and mind. She is a lovely soul indeed. The yoga and meditation in the amazing studio was simply wonderful. Looking forward to celebrating my 70th there!"

"I decided to do a last minute detox after 4 months backpacking around South america and booked amatierra only a few days before I was scheduled to arrive. I was met by such a warm atmosphere that made me feel right at home. Owners Jill and Bob were so accommodating, helpful and friendly. The detox programme included so much more than meals - I felt as I was truly being looked after the whole way through, whilst still enjoying my own space and time.Jill had such a caring, friendly and warm presence whilst giving me advice and information on diet and general wellness that was specific only to me. She dedicated so much time to each of us in order to understand our bodies and minds, and in turn help us understand more about ourselves. The daily yoga practices were conducted in the mornings in a gorgeous studio. I can truly say Tori's classes were the best I have ever attended. She was well trained and passed her knowledge and guidance to us in such a positive way. "

"Overall it was such a fantastic week that provided not just great facilities but a warmth and positivity that felt like home. I hope to find myself in Costa Rica again to return."

"The meals are perfect. You find yourself looking forward to each one shared on the lovely veranda. They are prepared with love and beautifully proportioned and flavored with local fresh, organic produce and spices. The offerings from the wellness center include massages, facials, shamanic and sound healings all in lovely rooms that cultivate peace and tranquility. Jill is a master yoga teacher in her own right with knowledge of the healing power of Hatha yoga. The pool is a perfect place to relax and read or just contemplate the beautiful views and the lodgings are cozy, comfortable and charming. I love bringing my students there, because they feel at home and taken care of. This makes my intention of helping them shed stress and dive deeper into themselves to reconnect with their most cherished dreams, all the easier. I will be back. Thank you Bob and Jill for holding this space for transformation and reconnecting with nature."

"I absolutely loved our stay at AmaTierra. The casitas are comfortable and nestled in the forest, so that you enjoy the sounds of the forest at night. We've never slept better! The owners and staff have a wonderful personal touch and will do anything to make your stay comfortable, as well as planning day trips, and providing directions to any points of interest. We took advantage of the morning yoga, evening meditation, and spa treatments, but truly AmaTierra is a wonderful location for whatever type of Costa Rican vacation you'd like. The whole property just has a wonderful aura of healing and relaxation. I must also mention the amazing fresh food, much of it from the property. The staff is so wonderful and friendly as well. "In my search for a yoga retreat center in Costa Rica, I came upon AmaTierra, and never looked back. Bob not only was available to answer all of my questions in the planning stages of our trip but Bob also helped in the planning of what would become our wedding in Costa Rica. My now husband and I took advantage of the honeymoon package offered through AmaTierra, and felt as though we were treated like family from day one until we left on our plane back home.Bob was available via email / phone whenever necessary to put the details together, maintained communication with us, prior to and after we left AmaTierra for our other stops, and was very helpful in addressing any questions we had with the locals, both in the planning stages, and while we were there. Bob had arranged for Juan to pick us up from the airport and to be our driver throughout most of our trip, which was a great pleasure, as Juan is not only very knowledgeable about the details of his country, he's also passionate in sharing it with others. We were welcomed to Amatierra with open arms and immediately felt like we were at the right place to release any worries or woes of our normal days. Our luggage was immediately brought to our private room, and a delicious lunch awaited us after our long journey. Bob and Jill and the other Amatierra guests quickly made us feel like family, sharing tales of our journeys and interests. We stayed at Amatierra for three days, during which we ate some of the most fresh and delicious food, experienced yoga / meditation in a gorgeous and serene location, went to Carrara National park, the beach, visited the crocs, while capping it off with amazing massages and foot rubs. Overall, we loved our stay at Amatierra and would recommend it to those looking to retreat from the hustle and bustle. One thing worth mentioning is that there are critters living amongst you on the mountain and when we first entered our room, we were greeted with spiders, and also saw some very big spiders on the grounds, that to this city girl was scary; however once we were settled into our room they went their way, while we went ours."

"I am a single male and I live in NYC. I was so burned out on work that I knew I wanted to take some time off and just get away to sleep, read, and try my best to not be on the internet. That was the break I wanted. The other important part of a de-stress week for me was to not have to worry about transport, meals, etc. I decided to not go home to family on Thanksgiving week and take that time to just be alone.I wasn't looking for "Costa Rica" per se but just a quiet place to be quiet myself. I found AmaTierra's 5-night package on the internet and that seemed great. Well it was great. It hit the marks on everything I was looking for; sleep, quiet, nice weather, and a sense of health. I got to Costa Rica and landed in the pleasant San Jose airport.AmaTierra had the excellent Juan pick me up and I was driven the one hour to the resort. I met Bob my phone buddy in person and he was great. We got along right away. I met Jill and she is wonderful too. She asked me what treatments I may be interested in and I told her that I didn't want to think about it and she totally got it. I had a lovely room away from the main house and road. I read three books and three New Yorker magazines.I did yoga and meditation with Jill in the stunning yoga pavilion which was really great. I had a lovely massage and three healthy square meals a day. There was water and wonderful Costa Rican coffee, a plenty in my room. I went to bed early and did not have Wi-Fi in the room (it is available in the common areas at certain times - perfect for this internet junkie!). I woke up with the sound of birds and a perfect weather to have a dip in the pool. I just cannot say a bad word about my week. (Okay I didn't lose 20 lbs and meet the love of my life but is that really AmaTierra's fault?) The stay was exactly what I wanted and perfect. The icing on the cake was when Jill and Bob invited me to be part of their Thanksgiving table. Amazingly kind. There are 12 Americans and Costa Ricans, in Spanish and English, shared a meal and gratitude. Sublime. Well today I am grateful for the warm hospitality I received from Bob and Jill and their terrific staff. Muchos gracias for the perfect detox getaway and much needed rest in a beautiful and gracious part of the world."

"Visiting Amatierra is like staying with favorite relatives / friends. Owners Bob and Jill are warm and welcoming. Manager Carlos with his contagious smile and upbeat charm is perceptive and helpful. The entire staff is very attentive and responsive to your needs. We enjoyed all our fresh, healthy, and very tasty meals on the open aired balcony overlooking the green-lush valley and mountains. The yoga pavilion is dream-like with the incredibly beautiful views of the tropical forest, which offers peace and tranquility. We are two female novice yogis, one late 50s, and the other late 60s. We each had our own casita, which were clean, and comfortable. Out of our 6-day stay, we took two full day excursions that Bob arranged. We had an awesome adventure with Victor of Vic-Tours, hiking the trails at Carara National Park, viewing birds and crocodiles on the mangrove, and river tour. Our other amazing adventure we spent with Juan visiting Poas Volcano and the wildlife refuge and hiking the trails at LaPaz Waterfall Gardens. The other days we stayed on the property hiking the grounds, reading by the pool, and indulging in heavenly spa treatments."

"I went to AmaTierra with Inner Peace Retreats for a week of yoga and Pilates. We had the entire resort, 17 of us in the 10 casitas. It is one of the most wonderful, peaceful places I have ever visited. Eating breakfast on the expansive patio while watching the toucans playing in the trees, taking a yoga class in the beautiful outdoor studio, eating one amazing meal after another, lounging by the pool, and wandering around the grounds taking photos of all the amazing plants and wildlife.Jill and Bob were outstanding hosts. They were attentive, flexible, kind, and accommodating. It really felt like we were guests in their home. Their staff, especially fabulous Carlos, were wonderful. The treatments were really special. I experienced the ear candling, head / neck / shoulder massage, the stomach chi, and a session with a spiritual healer. Tanya and I went to visit Marcia and Mark for their remarkable horse experience. We also had a salsa evening at the resort and a crystal bowl meditation evening - both were a lot of fun.For the many things to do away from the resort, Bob organized transport for us, and this went without a hiccup. We went zip lining and horse riding. Others went to the national park and the beach. When Bob went into the larger town, some of us went along with him, nothing was too much trouble. I will be visiting Jill and Bob again - there is no doubt. I will never forget my time at AmaTierra."

"I stayed at AmaTierra for 8 days in the beginning of December 2015. I did the yoga and wellness package, which was just what I needed! Both Jill and Bob are so sweet and truly care for their guests. I enjoyed yoga and meditation daily in the open air yoga studio, massages and facials. The food was AMAZING, literally some of the best food I've ever had. Also, it was nice to be able to get to know some of the staff, as well as other guests. I traveled alone and I felt just at home while at AmaTierra. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway, that's low key, this is the place for you. You will feel fully refreshed after your stay here!"

"I went to Amatierra in search of a meditative space to detox from a two-year period of non-stop stress and bad eating. Having never been to Costa Rica, all I knew was I didn't want frills or partying, just peace and beauty with access to bodywork and simple, healthy food. I got exactly that! Bob and Jill and their elegant staff are so attentive, professional, and friendly; the inspired meals were delicious and fresh; and the various types of bodywork and half-day trips to waterfalls and forests were ALL completely satisfying while leaving plenty of room for napping and journaling each day. My "Amapola" room was spacious and comfortable; I just had to remember to check for spiders upon entering at night and slept sometimes with earplugs to avoid being awakened by leaves dropping on the resonant tin roof. These were small adjustments to make though, for residing in a gorgeous jungle! (The amazing sounds of the cicadas were so healing.) There was a delightful friendliness among the guests and staff, inspired by Bob and Jill's delightful personalities and deep respect for the environment surrounding and supporting us. Most beneficial of all to me were Jill's varied talents as a teacher and healer: her consultations helped me identify dietary and emotional shifts to help avoid stress upon returning home, and her yoga classes and meditation sessions were deeply spiritual, down to earth, and welcoming. Totally pleased, can't wait to go back."

"In my sixty for years of travel, I have never felt to peaceful and relaxed, Maybe serene and blissful are a better term By the second day, I did not know what day it was and truly did not care. The host and hostess and staff treated you like family, The food is plentiful and fresh, grown on the property and fantastic chef! Everything consumed was a gourmet delight. There was a want for nothing, tours ( if you chose to leave paradise) were superior so interesting and educational or you can just relax by the pool .Services offered were astounding, massage, mani/pedi, facial and nutritional assistance which I personally found remarkable. Or sit by the beautiful pool. Always refreshments available in the homey lobby which looks like a living room nightly piano and singing, which I found charming yoga and meditation daily which was a major plus and remarkable. Unforgettable experience, besides meeting people from all over the world which i am still in touch. . Simply adored the mountain air. "refreshing". Making reservations for next year now!!! Cant wait to go back! Hats off! Deep bow and major praise to the gracious host and hostess!"
