"What comes into the mind of long staying expats and local Thai explorers when thinking about their next island destination around Thailand? Phuket may popup as an option into their travel plans, but the overrated island could also bare some negative labels: busy, touristic, overpriced … to name a few. As a long time resident in the 'Land of Smiles', I was also trapped into those stereotyped beliefs and often skipped Phuket as an option to spend a long weekend, preferring other islands such as Koh Samui, Koh Tao or Koh Chang, until recently ... A Thai celebrity friend told me about the world’s first luxury Thai Hammam, which opened in a luxury resort somewhere in Phuket. As an expert and aficionados of spa, health and wellness, I had to discover and learn more this novelty in Thailand. I quickly arranged to travel to Phuket during the first long weekend of May and was off to try all what Amatara resort and wellness had to offer for a very demanding traveller. The personalized service started at Phuket international airport, when my partner and I, were picked up in style at the arrival terminal by our friendly driver. The airport transfer was included in the room promotion package [promotional package and prices]. The VIP mini-van felt like a private jet cabin. We were offered soft drinks from the mini-bar in the comfort of our large leather seats, cold towels, iPad connected to WIFI, and an option to switch on the TV with our own selection of movies for the one hour ride to the five stars resort. After a pleasant ride and full of excitements, we were welcomed at the magnificent lobby offering an unobstructed view of Cape Panwa. Tucked away in a quiet corner of this idyllic island, Cape Panwa has long been recognized as the most precious jewel in Phuket's crown. Overlooking a secluded bay of pure white sands lapped by the turquoise Andaman Sea and boasting some of the region's most exhilarating diving, the flawless scenery around our luxury resort was simply breathtaking. We were soon introduced to our ‘24 hours’ butler, Khun Aoff who showed us to our Ocean view pool villa, 150sqm of pure luxury and comfort. We felt directly awed by the oversized lavish bathroom, grandiose bedroom with a lounge/reading area, and the splendid Jacuzzi private pool with sundeck, overlooking the Cape. We had suddenly no more need to go outside the resort and to fully enjoy the privacy of our own pool villa for three days. The Villa comes with complimentary well-stocked mini bar, daily laundry and pressing service of up to four pieces per person. Feeling hungry after few laps in our private pool, we headed to 'The Retreat', a hidden gem for healthy food lovers. 'The Retreat’ is opened for breakfast for Wellness Retreat guests and Pool Villa guests as well as lunch and dinner for all guests who are looking for healthy cuisine options. We were offered a variety of healthy options including raw juice blends, superfood smoothie blends, salads, appetizers, soups, broth, main course, desserts, herbal tea and healthy coffee. All ingredients are dedicatedly crafted based on the foundations of using real, unrefined, whole foods, free range, cold–pressed oil and avoiding extremes, additives, pesticides, toxins and refined sugars. The menu features seasonal, innovative cuisine with a diverse array of traditional and modern healthy eating influences. The food was created based on local Thai culture inspiration, which encourages us to nurture harmony with spirit, the environment and to re-connect with one another. Check the weekly activities newsletter for Thai cooking classes and learn in a relaxed atmosphere, the secret of longevity and health from this ancient Thai tradition. The highlight anticipated experience and main reasons for this trip, was to visit and try the unique multi-awarded and first worldwide Thai Hammam right here in Phuket. Blending together traditional Turkish and Moroccan bathing practices with the wisdom and gentleness of authentic Thai spa healing arts, the treatment combines the sensations of pampering, soaking, exfoliating, cleansing, contrasting temperatures, deep massage and calming rejuvenation. The ‘Thai Hammam Experience’ at Amatara started with a traditional sauna followed by a waterfall or jet blast rinse to cool down the body temperature. We were then escorted into the Hammam room to have an intensive hair treatment applied on along with the scalp massage before going into the Thai herbal steam room to soften skin and relax our aching muscles. Once the skin was softened, we indulged in a full body massage and exfoliation atop an internally warmed stone bed. The Thai hammam massage is a luxurious combination of 100% organic natural products (Moroccan Black soap) and therapeutic massage with a strong Thai influence. The next step in the journey was a deeply soothing, healing and detoxifying thermal mud bath. The body was completely covered with therapeutic mud (we both had chosen Moor Mud from Hungary), while we relaxed on an internally heated stone bench. The pores of the skin opened from the heat of the mud room and the previous stages of the Hammam process, and the dead skin removed, allowing the minerals of the mud to be absorbed into the body via the skin. This was not only wonderfully detoxifying and soothing for the skin, it helped to reduce inflammation in the body, thus reducing aches, pains and muscular stiffness. After several minutes, a gentle steam infuses the mudroom, softening the mud in order to be easily rinsed off. After rinsing, we took a rest in a soothing Himalayan Salt cave relaxation zone. Negative ions were released into the air of the salt room, akin to those of the fresh ocean air, and the salt elements were particularly beneficial for the respiratory system. As an ultimate pampering option, the Thai Hammam Experience can be ended with Amatara’s Signature Massage for deep relaxation. The surroundings are of exquisite architectural design with a mix of traditional Turkish and Moroccan influences with modern Asian style and luxurious elegance. The Thai elements of the Hammam are built around gentleness and a sense of wisdom referred to in the cascading mosaics, modern, clean geometry, and gold-colored Turkish fittings. Couples and family can enjoy to ‘Learn to massage Another’, a very special session designed to create a deeper, heartfelt connection between a pair of people (couple, friends, family). The Amatara Resort is an ideal spot for couples and families seeking a luxurious tropical vacation with all the trimmings."

"My husband and I took my 88 year old dad with us on a short break to Phuket as we needed to get away from the dismal weather in Hong Kong to see a bit of sun. I chose the Amatara based mainly on other travellers experiences and we were not disappointed. The hotel is on Cape Panwa so about an hour from the airport depending on traffic. Took us over an hour to get there but much quicker on our return trip. When we arrived at the hotel we were immediately taken by the fabulous views of the infinity pool in front of the reception and the beautiful gardens around. The hotel is immaculately kept, and no matter where you stay you have the most amazing views of the sea or the surrounding bay. I had read that it is a very hilly resort so had asked that we be given rooms near the main areas to save my dad from too much walking. We were given fabulous rooms next to each other overlooking the bay. The rooms were large and superbly furnished with very comfortable beds and well-kitted bathrooms. Loved the freestanding baths which sadly we didn't get to use. From the spacious balconies we watched the glorious sunsets, absolutely stunning! The staff were fantastic and especially caring with my dad fondly referring to him as Papa, which he loved. They couldn't do enough to help, offering and regularly replacing iced water supplied by the pool. They would occasionally come around with little tasters, also by the pool a lovely touch. Breakfasts held in the restaurant were fantastic, a great choice of juices, cereals, breads and pastries, salads and Asian food all available in the buffet and cooked breakfasts, waffles, pancakes etc cooked freshly from the kitchen. We ate at The Grill one night and although we couldn't fault the food or the service, which were excellent as expected. My only adverse comment would be that as the only people eating there ( probably all evening) it was very lacking in atmosphere. We thought the prices were very high, and as its so reasonable to eat outside the hotel, it wouldn't encourage guests to eat there too often, if at all. We had a fabulous meal and wouldn't have looked twice at the bill in Hong Kong or London but we thought it very high for Thailand. We don't regret eating there as it was fabulous - and for a couple could be very romantic - but think the pricing needs to be looked at if they wish to attract more guests to eat at the hotel. My husband used the spa on our last day and said the experience was one of the best he'd had. We only really discovered the beach on our last morning, as the afternoon we'd arrived the tide was out and the beach looked very rocky and uninviting. Do yourselves a favour and go back when the tide is in, as although the beach is small it's very charming and with a full tide very easy to swim in, without having to walk over any rocks or stones. All in all I would recommend the Amatara very highly and we will no doubt return ourselves one day. There are many lovely hotels in Phuket - and some a lot nearer to the airport - but if you truly want a relaxing and peaceful few days in a stunning location, you really couldn't do any better!"

"We booked at the Amatara resort for a week at the end of our one month honeymoon travelling around Asia. We arrived early evening and got a lovely warm welcome from the reception staff and were told that we had been upgraded from Premier sea view to Sea view cape which was very kind. The room was massive, very comfortable, beautiful views and very peaceful. Breakfast was incredible, a la carte hot food with a fantastic selection of European and Asian items to choose from a buffet. The pool was lovely, very peaceful and quiet, very attentive pool attendants bringing towels, ice cold water and fruit to you as needed. We decided to extend our stay by and extra 4 days within 24 hours of arriving, we were so impressed by the resort. We didn't eat in the resort as we prefer to eat locally. We hired a moped and went to some really good restaurants down the road that served great Thai dishes. There is a shop at the bottom of the driveway, it's quite a steep hill but if you ask at reception they will kindly drive you to the front gates. The location was perfect for us, right at the south of the island, away from all the tacky nightlife in Patong. Cape Panwa is very quiet, but not totally isolated. There are shops, restaurants, barbers etc within a 5 minute walk. The spa is lovely, we had the Thai Hammam treatment which was very relaxing and the spa is incredible. Towards the end of our stay we asked to have a look at the pool villas. We were taken there by Mai on reception and the moment we walked through the door we were sold. We were given a good price to upgrade and we spend the last 4 days in total luxury. Included in the pool villa package was a free laundry service, free mini bar, afternoon tea, a more secluded breakfast area and pool as well as complimentary cocktails between 6 & 7pm. It was worth every Baht! We absolutely loved it and kicked ourselves for not thinking about upgrading earlier! In summary the hotel is faultless, the staff were fabulous, Garry, Mai, Jik all took the time to speak to us whenever we saw them. We can't find fault with anything or anyone. It has been a perfect end to our honeymoon and this hotel has not set the bar for anywhere else we stay in the future. Thank you to every member of staff for making our stay so memorable. It has been 10 days in paradise!"

"Stayed with my wife for 3 days at the end of our Thailand trip to relax before the flight home. We had a private pool villa which was spacious, clean and very relaxing. The pool was larger than expected and had a jacuzzi function to make it more relaxing. At night the lights can then on so you can continue to relax in the patio area. The room was large and full of everything we needed. Great snacks and service! The bed was great soft and comfortable. The room had automatic blinds and the bathroom was HUGE. We had two bathrooms in the villa as well as a great soaker tub. My favorite part was the service! As soon as we arrived we were greeted and looked after like royalty. Martin took care and looked after us our whole stay. He even provided us with a romantic service putting flowers and roses all over the room. Make sure you ask for Martin he will definitely take care of you! Our villa price included a spa day, as well as high tea and a private area for breakfast. I highly recommend the spa, best massage I have had and they provide you with detox drinks and herbal teas that are unique to that region. This hotel is located at the south point of Phuket and is far from the airport so the hotel provides shuttles to see phuket town and the markets which is a great service. If you want to have some authentic Thai food outside the resort take one of the buggies to the main gate and turn left and walk 5 minutes to the end of the street and you will find great street food as well has a few restaurants that cater to tourists. We would go and grab some fresh grilled fish and squid as well as fresh pad Thai and mangos just a 5 mins walk from the resort. Amatara was a unique experience and is highly recommended if you want to relax and enjoy the views and have some privacy."

"After searching through a lot of hotels for our trip, we decided to stay here for 5 nights. The resort really does look exactly like the photos on the website and is breathtaking in person. Early morning Pickup from the airport was great and the staff greeted us and offered use of the day room until our room was ready -- it was so nice to be able to take a shower and nap after a long flight! The "welcome iced tea" they provide at check in is delicious too! We arrived during the Songkran festival and the resort had a service with Monks. It was nice to see the resort offer so many donations to the monks and warmly include us and other guests in the service. Our room looked just like the photos online. Beautiful views and lots of space. Loved the one touch blinds and the shower. Our AC went out on a particularly hot day but they were very quick to fix it. (Hey, stuff happens, right?) The breakfast buffet was, by far, the best I've had at anywhere. It's massive and includes anything and everything you could want. Cheese, fresh bread, lots of pastries, oatmeal, fresh fruit, Rice, noodles, congee, fresh juices, plus lots of cooked to order choices. The waffles and eggs Benedict were really great. The servers were excellent too! The pool is beautiful and huge! Plenty of room. We enjoyed the complimentary meditation for beginners classes. The spa is wonderful. We opted for the Thai Hamman experience and it was so relaxing. Like nothing else around! The staff were wonderful. We were also able to book our tours to the elephant trek and Phi Phi islands through the front desk. We really liked that the hotel didn't charge any more than booking directly with the tour operator. That was much appreciated. The free shuttle to Central Festival Mall was nice and you're able to pick up a cab to Old Phuket pretty cheap. We didn't want to leave the resort... Beautiful grounds, great views, but what we liked best of all was the staff! They made it special!"

"A quick review to say do not hesitate to stay at this hotel. To list all of the times the staff went out of their way to help us and make it a special experience would go off the page. They are kind, smart and aim to serve your every need. This beautiful hotel occupies a very large plot and a kind of mixture between colonial and thai style. Due to it being on its own headland the views are lively. Our room was gorgeous and very nicely appointed. Take a look at the various pictures. It isn't isolated as some may suggest and golf buggies help get you around including to the front gate from where there are a half a dozen nice places within walking distance outside to eat should you want to explore. We found the quality of the breakfast and hotel restaurants really great and not over the top in prices. The pool was nice and big and rarely crowded. Life centres around it to some extent. Service around the pool very good. Our girls loved being spoiled! As said book this place. You won't regret it."

"The Amatara has to be the best hotel I have ever stayed at. The location is perfect, in a quiet corner of Phuket away from night clubs and noise. The staff couldn't be more friendly helpful and attentive, always smiling and wanting to make your stay a happy one. Great location for local bars and restaurants if eating out. Our room was huge with everything we needed, and was cleaned everyday. I would go back again tomorrow if I could!! I highly recommend this hotel and location to anyone wanting a really good quality hotel, great location and such beautiful people."

Ms.Kai the reservations director was so great (because we had some confusion) but no worries, they made everything right. The food, pools, service, room, drinks, beach...amazing. We had both the private pool villa and a normal cape room. Both great. I am counting the days until I return to this hotel!"

"My husband and I celebrated part of our honeymoon here. We were warmly greeted by the wonderful staff in a huge open lobby with sweeping views of the ocean. One of the most stunning views and resorts we've stayed in Thailand. We wish we could have stayed more than just 3 nights. The villa (58) we stayed in was large in a beautiful setting with an ocean view. Upon arrival our room was set up with flowers, fresh fruit and chocolates to help us celebrate our honeymoon. The room had everything you could want including a mosquito kit with room and body spray. The bed was soft/comfortable especially by Asian standards. The amenities were certainly 5 star. If it wasn't there I'm confident the staff would get it for you. The room and resort was private and quiet which was a nice change from the other hotels we've stayed in over the last 6 weeks. If you're looking to be close to town this might not be the place for you. There are some basic shops just outside the resort, but for day trips you will have to take a taxi. The staff arranged a tour/snorkeling trip of Phi Phi islands which was first class (Siam Adventure World). We had to get up early (6:30am departure), but that meant we beat the majority of the tours to the islands. Cost was 3500 BHT per person. More expensive then some tours, but you get what you pay for. We had a cheaper tour in Krabi and really appreciated the nicer boat/food/snorkeling gear and staff. The daily breakfast was superb. In addition to the continental breakfast they also offered a cooked item as part of the breakfast. I enjoyed berry waffles and my husband had eggs Benedict along with fresh fruit, muesli, yogurts etc. We dined once at the restaurant and also had room service, all which were wonderful. The prices were reasonable for a resort. The Wifi throughout the resort was fast with no problems. My husband enjoyed the small beach taking a paddle board out for a few hours. It's not a huge beach, but has nice beach chairs and everything you would need to relax or enjoy some water sports. The pool looked amazing. We never spent anytime in it, but had we stayed a few more days I would have liked to. The fitness facility is large with weight machines and different cardio machines. I wasn't feeling well, but wish I could have enjoyed using them. It has a great view of the ocean. They offered biking classes, Pilates class, as well as other resort activities. They also had a nice library with views of cape Panwa. They arranged transport to the airport which takes about an hour and costs 1200 BHT.This hotel lives up to it's 5 stars! It was our favorite hotel during our six weeks of traveling. We hope we can come back again. Thanks Amatara for making our honeymoon so memorable!"

"Great hotel near little town promenade, restaurants and shops. Amazing views from the infinity pool and from the room. Do not choose this hotel if you wish to go for long walks on the beach, the beach area is there but it is more a strip for sunbathing and relaxing. The Grill restaurant was a very nice surprise, very good dining experience. Finally, the Spa is one of the best tried so far in Thailand, a must!"

"What more can you ask for? Gorgeous tropical grounds, panoramic sea views, large infinity pool, super breakfasts, fast wi fi (even on the beach!), great fitness center, full service spa, excellent menu choices and a private beach at a very reasonable rate. But that's not the best part; the staff. They are super friendly, helpful and genuinely caring, this is the finest resort or hotel staff I have encountered in literally thousands of nights around the world. We highly recommend this property for couples looking for romance, families or groups. Lots of hills, but a fleet of golf cars are happy to take you where you need to go."

"Our room was just perfect, overlooking the ocean, decorated with beautiful colors and elegantly furnished. It was hard to leave it!!! They offer you a variety of delicious teas and snacks in the room as well. The spa was memorable, the best massage I ever had. The therapist Bell removed all my knots and was manipulating my body as if it was a gem. She was so delicate and it also felt like she Was doing a choreography while Massaging me. We experienced a delicious ginger tea and dried fruits wrapped in a Thai edible leaf.Anyways I could go on and on but I'm dying to go try the green curry of the restaurant so I'll just stop the review and advise you to book this hotel if you are planning a trip in phuket. It's super intimate and nestled in a hidden corner. You'll feel like you're the only one there."

"We absolutely loved our recent stay with Amatara. The room was very nice, with a balcony view of the water. The complimentary breakfast had lots of options and they really know how to make a good cappuccino. It definitely felt like high-quality all around. The reasons for the 4-star was that 1) the beach is pretty mediocre and small, 2) it is very far from Phuket with no easy way of getting into town and 3) the front-desk staff, while happy to help, were not super knowledgeable about the area and we ended up having to do a lot of personal research. Overall a very nice stay, thank you!"

"This is a luxury hotel! With great views, an epic pool and splendid rooms, you can't go wrong here. Yes, the beach isn't picture perfect, but it is great for lounging at and cooling down in. Who needs a perfect beach, when you can swim in that amazing pool all day. The staff, food and rooms were all excellent. Although it was at the higher end of our daily budget, we thoroughly recommend this as either a first or last stop on your trip, as it gave us the recharge we needed after much travelling. It is within walking distance to some excellent restaurants (we recommend Baan Ra Tree) and a shuttle can get you to Patong for a night of craziness in between all the tranquility the hotel offers."

"I had the pool villa and the views over the bay and sunset were astonishing. The gym is well equipped which is always important to me and the service was attentive without being intrusive. I had an early flight the next day which was before the kitchen opened so the front desk organised for a breakfast pack to go how good is that. Sundowners around the pool was ultimate relaxation experience I have booked another weekend in the new year so I can really soak it up."

"We just returned from this relaxing place two days ago and I already want to go back. We stayed in the Ocean View Cape. The luxury touches are certainly in place: oversized towels, large balcony, minibar and coffee service in room, spacious and contemporary bath and appointments throughout the room. In addition, darkening shades, a comfy king size bed, full bathtub, dressing area, service to the room was fast and efficient (for ice, extra shampoo, glasses, etc). Transportation organised through the hotel was top notch to and from the airport. They offer shuttles to and from Patong Beach, the markets and just down the hill into Cape Panwa. The spa was wonderful - we had a couples massage that lasted 75 minutes. A serene and peaceful (zen) location for sure. There are more things - food was excellent, beach is small and private, the pool area was first class - oversized loungers, towel service, fresh ice water, and a small bar if you want a cocktail, beer, soda or a snack. Landscaping and plantings were in excellent shape and the staff was continually working on something to keep the place first class. The staff were all extremely friendly, pleasant and helpful - always a smile on their faces."

"Beautiful hotel with great views from the rooms. The infinity pool is amazing. Rooms are spacious. Almost everything you need is in the hotel.Following are the downers: Panwa bay itself is a very quite and kinda dull place. Come here for a day or two if you want to get away from the crowd of West coast phuket. Not much to do otherwise. Come here for the hotel. Restaurant is pricy and food is okay. Service is good though. There are complimentary water activities like kayaking but you need to be an early riser for that. The sea goes back in Panwa early morning."

"We went there for a weekend family holiday. Having stayed before in the Blu Radisson just is front comparison was unavoidable. The hotel is nice and rooms are comfortable. Staff very friendly and location is good. I would try to strongly avoid the BBQ buffet as the gap between choice and quality and price is to high for anyone with some sensitivity for his hard worked money. One of the poorest offerings I have ever seen. Like to like I would go with closed eyes for the Blu Radisson but if you avoid the dissonant tones the hotel could be a good choice."

"Surprisingly great stay at the Amatara - staff were really good, especially Bow on the front desk. The room (pavillion) was very secluded. Pool, beach and gardens were a delight and in only 24 hours I felt like I had a week-long holiday. Also, breakfast was great, lovely breezy dining room. Great views too as the resort is high up.Only minor downpoints, the beach is no stunner (resort is high up, you need to walk down to the beach and its not one of Phukets best) and also I would have liked to be able to see the sea from our pavilion without standing up on the balcony - so some trimming of the (beautiful) foliage outside our balcony would have been helpful. On the plus side, there were lovely design elements throughout the property and the Shanghai Tang toiletries were yummy."

"My partner and I stayed at the Regent Panwa (now rebranded as Amatara Resort & Wellness) for 8 days 7 nights, we must say it was one of the best island holiday experiences we had. Every inch of the resort was designed to enhance our comfort and pleasure: comfortable furnishings, spacious villa, dreamy bathroom, magnificent views, beautiful infinity pools, and five-star service and food!!They have excellent free laundry service-7 pieces per day, very efficient and pressed to perfection. We like their daily breakfast at the Club, afternoon tea and cocktails at the library lounge. The experience of having breakfast at the Club every morning was exhilarating and serene at the same time, the food, the view, the service, everything was perfect! Breakfast was made to order from the menu. For our breakfast, we had tried almost everything, and nothing disappointed us. The coffee was strong and fragrant; the muffins (either chocolate or blueberry) were heavenly, banana bread was moist and delectable, even something as simple as mixed grain toast with home-made jam and butter just put a smile on our face, and not to mention the Chinese congee cooked with broth was just delicious. We tried the breakfast at the other place, the restaurant which served breakfast for regular hotel guests, believe me, the quality of food there couldnt be compared with the food served at the Club, there was no comparison. The extra money we paid for our pool villa was well worth it for the quality breakfast we were served each morning at the Club.We like their free use of iPad during our stay, free and good Wi-Fi connection, complimentary soft drinks in our minibar are replenished daily, and thorough housekeeping-our bathroom and toilets are meticulously cleaned daily, soaps are replenished daily.Pool villa is highly recommended if your budget allows with the inclusive daily breakfast at the Club, afternoon tea, cocktails, laundry service, free iPad for your stay, which is well worth the extra money!! You really get the quality you pay for! We truly hope the rebranding will not affect the high standards of the resort and the management will keep the things we love about Regent!"

"It's hard to find fault with this immaculate resort. We stayed in a seaview villa for 7 nights and absolutely loved it! Having the luxury of our own private pool was heaven (so worth the extra expense) and the villa itself was beyond our expectations - simply stunning and even better than the photos on the website. Staff were gorgeous and nothing was ever too much trouble. Grounds were very clean and immaculately presented. As it's built into the side of a hill, some of the walking paths can be quite steep but we got around this by calling reception and requesting a golf cart when we needed to go out. No problem. Only downfall is that it is at least 45 minutes to any of the main tourist sites but if it's total relaxation you are after, you will not be disappointed. We are already planning a return trip. Thank you."

"The resort is very good on its size: not too big until we need to call buggy all the time and not too small until we have no place to discover. I stayed with my dad for 2 nights in the pool villa and it is value for money. We did not want to leave this place. This resort is suit for everyone - couple or family. We love our pool villa very much. The view was very stunning! The staff are very friendly and attentive. The public pool view are superb. We spent most of the time there to enjoy the view. Breakfast buffet menu has limited choice but we can choose egg choice from the menu. The waffle was very tasty. Ice cappuccino coffee is included is a plus. I love it!."
