The Boom earns its name in full from the noise is creates as large sections of water hollow out over a shallow and well-defined sandbar. You don’t want there to be too much swell in the water as the swells get magnified by the underwater canyon just off the coastline. If you are planning on surfing this wave, you definitely want to consider packing more than just one board.
When the swell gets pumping and the Boom is closing out they hire a boat to go out to the island. This long left hand point break has multiple sections that work on all tides and holds any size swell. A goofy footers favorite and a great place to practice your backside carves as well, this wave is consistent and beautiful.
Nahualapa is one of the best beaches for the small wave season (November - April), and begins to become a more advanced beach break when there is more swell in the water. When the waves are small this beach can produce long peeling lefts and rights that make long boarding an absolute pleasure. When the swell grows though, smaller boards are preferred as the paddle out can be more challenging, yet producing barreling waves and many opportunities for laying down some rail.
One of the favorite waves along the entire coast, and it is only a short walk from the grounds. Whether the swell is big, or small, Aposentillo’s beach break always has waves, and tends to be a favorite go-to spot for all levels of surfing. An easy wave to improve your skills of pop-ups, turns, or just getting more comfortable in the water. Aposentillo with its palm trees melting into the ocean and gentle surf will surely become one of your favorites too.
Let’s begin where it all began…in soft gentle waves where you can stand if we want to. Here, the ability to swim is only needed if you want to show off, or go out for a mellow sunrise/sunset paddle. Follow the private stairs right down to the beach that the cliff overlooks and find yourself in some fun playful surf. This location is great for a sunset surf or teaching your loved ones the joy of surfing for their first time.
You are lucky to have a couple secret river mouths around you that hold both the swell and the low tide. These waves are not for the faint of heart as the shallow sandbar produces strong barreling waves that have the reward the brave and punish the hesitant. The river mouth is a fun and exciting wave but is somewhat fickle. It requires a boat access so the crowds as always thin and the adventure is always worth it.
One of the micro-adventures they like to take, Jiquilillo is very similar to the Boom in the way that it breaks with its heavy barrels when there is a bit of swell in the water. In the winter time this wave becomes a lot mellower on the higher tides and produces fun long rides for longboarders, and as the beach is about 20 km long there are endless peaks and almost never another surfer in sight. This waves requires a 30-minute car ride to a nearby local fishing town, but its a great way to not only score some empty waves, but also absorb yourself more into the Nicaraguan culture.
There are some secrets that of course they don’t want to share over the internet, so you are just going to have to come and see for yourself that they live in a wave rich neighborhood.
Amaru Wellbeing Resort's gardens produce much of what our guests eat at each meal. What they do not grow onsite at our surf and yoga resort, they source locally from neighboring farms. Their meals are inspired by the seasons and the rich Nicaraguan flavors. They cater to all dietary requirements and preferences. You’ll be able to enjoy the local cuisines no matter what dietary restrictions you or your group may have. “estomago lleno, corazon contento” (full stomach and happy heart).
