Locals often joke that Florida is one of the few places in the world where it’s ok to wear flip-flops to a nice dinner. So, shorts and shirts are fine. Unless you go to an upscale restaurant or a club – that’s when you want to be more put together, such as wearing linen pants and a polo shirt. Similarly, ladies can wear jeans, shorts, or linen pants with t-shirts. Or dresses. But you should never be barefoot in public.
If you plan to visit any places of worship in Florida, you don’t need to worry much about attire. It’s even acceptable to wear shorts (for both men and women). Knee-length skirts and a t-shirt are, however, a better choice for women. And you should avoid wearing tank tops.
Just like anywhere across the USA, tipping is the norm in Florida. The tipping rate when dining out is similar to the rest of the USA: 15-20% of the pre-tax bill. If the service is outstanding, you can tip even more. For buffet-style restaurants where you serve yourself, it’s common to tip about 10%.
If you are dining with a large group, in some places, a gratuity charge is added (so make sure to check before you tip). At bars, tip US$1-2 per drink or 15-20% of the total if you’ve opened a tab.
At the hotel, tip the maid US$2-5 per day. When it comes to room service, if the service charge is not added to the bill, do leave a tip of 15-20%. If you use taxi or ride-share services, tip 10-15%, while tour guides expect a 10-20% tip.
Florida is a safe state to visit but it’s always a good idea to be well-informed. Always keep your valuables in check, particularly in crowded areas. Be aware of unauthorized services offering rides and instead opt for public transportation, official taxis, or ride-sharing apps (such as Uber). When in doubt, ask the staff at the retreat for help and they can schedule a taxi service for you.
