“Are you a freelancer?” is the first question I’m asked whenever I travel. “How do you earn your salary? It must be easy to work online, right?” The proper response to these questions would be “Yes, I am a freelancer, and I earn my living by working hard and staying committed to my tasks constantly. It is a challenging job that requires a lot of dedication and perseverance.” But how many people would actually understand the meaning behind my words?
Strength training has been proven to prevent diseases and degenerative conditions, increase energy, decrease anxiety, increase bone density, build a strong heart, and reduce blood pressure. Typically, when you talk about sculpting the body, you think about HIIT circuits and the weight room. And yoga is, wrongly known, only as a good option for warm-up, stretching, and never seems to be considered a workout.
It’s no secret that we live in perhaps the most stressful times there ever were. Even if our material comfort is perhaps greater (for those of us privileged enough), the daily grind takes a higher and higher mental toll. Only the levels of information we absorb daily are a huge and incredible source of mental strain, never mind the emotional pressure.
Stress, and its physical symptoms, affects 77% of the population as reported by the American Institute of Stress. Over 90% of doctor visits can be traced back to stress in some way from poor digestion, disrupted sleep, increase heart attack/stroke risks, compromises our immune system, increase in anxiety symptoms and more.
India is the birthplace of yoga and is considered as one of the most spiritual places on Earth. Each year, yoga enthusiasts from all over the world flock to India to experience yoga in all forms, be it within an ashram, a spiritual retreat in Rishikesh, or even a relaxing yoga retreat on the beaches of Goa.
While both a yoga school and a yoga ashram offer yoga instructions, an ashram is typically linked to spirituality. At an ashram, you will find basic necessities and very little room for indulgences. You are expected to help out with day to day chores, and should do so with discipline.
Aside from your daily yoga and meditation practice, you follow the strict routine of the ashram, which include waking up early, practice breathing exercises, meditate, practice yoga asana and eat simple, vegetarian food. The living quarters are very basic and distractions (i.e. your phones and tablets are not allowed).
