Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is the physical yoga practice descended from the Ashtanga yoga lineage, an ancient philosophy over 5,000 years old, developed originally in Mysore India by the late Pattabhi Jois. Ashtanga, meaning ‘eight limbs’, is a spiritual discipline that follows an eight-stage cultivation process, of which the yoga postures, known as ‘asanas’, are part.
This 200-hour teacher training focuses on the core book The Yoga Sutras by Patanjali, a compilation of ancient scriptures where Ashtanga Yoga was first delineated. Considered one of the foundations of classical yoga philosophy, The Yoga Sutras are the basis of many yoga and meditation practices today. While it is recommended you are familiar with main principles of The Yoga Sutras before your training, it is not compulsory, as classes will go into in-depth analysis.
The practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa is defined by the connection of breath with movement in a flowing sequence. Asanas are performed in a specific order, whereby each pose prepares the body for the next. Through regular practice, benefits include increased strength and flexibility while encouraging discipline and a focused mind. A practice as much of the mind as it is of the body; Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is ultimately a moving meditation.
The Ashtanga Vinyasa system has six series. In this 200-hour yoga training, you will focus on the Primary Series, teaching a modified one-hour version that takes you through key postures. Classes are energetic and fast-paced, combining sun salutations, a series of standing poses, set inversions, and seated poses, all linked by a Vinyasa sequence. As classes are dynamic and at times challenging, All Yoga recommends a strong prior yoga practice of at least four to six months.
During the training, you will learn and practice Mysore yoga. This Ashtanga-style of yoga is self-led, meaning students will practice on their own, at their own pace. Mysore yoga is highly meditative; the self-led style allows for inward focus and heightened awareness of breath and individual movement. At the end of the training, you also have your own memorized practice that you can use as a basis to recreate and teach wherever you go.
