Alila Manggis Bali Hotel, Designer Boutique Resort - 4 stars

Alila Manggis breathtaking location between the sea and Balis sacred Mount Agung inspired a seamless concept for the resort by its designers at Kerry Hill Architects, with free-flowing interaction between the buildings and surrounding nature. A traditional alang alang thatched roof covers the lobby, beautifully offset by polished ivory and coloured concrete floors. A latticed screen of diagonally laid stones is a feature at each end of the lobby.

Four two-storey buildings of cool white stone, lit up in geometric beams of warm tones after dark, house the guestrooms. Each block is a skilful execution of traditional and contemporary Balinese architecture, set at a 45 angle to the beach, allowing all rooms and suites a view of the sea and the resorts centrally featured pool.

Leisure concierge

Real! Original! Traditional! These three words have become synonymous with East Bali. The simplicity of the folk around, the relatively unspoilt and age-old traditions, the smiling faces, the swaying palms and narrow streets set against a backdrop of paddy fields and volcanoes. Buitan beach and Alila Manggis are a truly and surprisingly different experience in East Bali. 4 star hotel tours and trips can be booked through our Leisure Concierge to discover all this and more!

Swimming pool

The swimming pool is a central feature of the resort and is designed as an unusual inverted pyramid. This creates deep water in the middle and shallow water around the edges, allowing guests to relax and enjoy a cooling afternoon dip at this boutique resort. Balis swaying coconut palms, and beautiful landscaped gardens provide the perfect setting to lay back and enjoy the resort's peaceful, sunny environment.

Yoga Pavilion

The ocean-facing yoga pavilion runs yoga sessions every Monday and Friday from 17:00 to 18:15 for guests in-house.

Seasalt restaurant

Inspired by a neighboring organic salt farm, the Seasalt Restaurant is set in a traditional Balinese pavilion on a lotus pond. Serving both a contemporary menu and a range of Indonesian and Balinese favorites with Executive Chef I Nyoman Santika and Food & Beverage Manager Made Putra Arnaya. Seasalt is also an integral part of the Alila Manggis Cooking School. Elegant and relaxed, the restaurant looks out on to the ocean and the resorts beautifully landscaped grounds. Guests can also enjoy poolside or garden dining, set beneath the tranquil coconut grove.

The organic garden nearby also presents a "surprisingly different" dining option. The sea salt they use is farmed from the salt pans in Goa Lawah nearby, thus the name of the restaurant. They bring you flavors that are both local and international, some inspired and others traditional, some simple and a few slightly more complicated, some meals for one and others to share, some spicy and a couple that are not too spicy.

Alila Manggis Bali recommends some flavors to share, their signature meal, the traditional Balinese Megibung, which is a unique and very traditional way of sharing food with friends and family during village ceremonies in East Bali and some parts of Lombok. This is an excellent way to sample the local cuisine and is decoratively served to you on a carved timber stand called the Dulang.

One of Bali's best kept secrets, Alila Manggis is a secluded, stylish seaside resort in Manggis, where modern European shapes meet open, tropical design. Set amidst a coconut grove, the resort is nestled between the sea and the majestic Mount Agung, Bali's most sacred mountain. Alila Manggis is situated on tranquil Buitan Beach within the regency of Karangasem, close to the town of Candidasa, and provides the perfect base from which to explore the unspoilt East. This area of the island is renowned for its spectacular beauty where the steep rise from coast to mountain creates magical scenery.

This boutique hotel in Bali is the gateway to the dive islands of the east coast, the mother temple of Besakih and the great water palaces and kingdoms of East Bali. Alila Manggis is also just 10 minutes from Padang Bai harbor where ferries leave for Lombok and other nearby islands. Head away from the crowds to an unspoilt east coast hotel in Candidasa such as Alila Manggis, where modern European shapes meet open, tropical design. Bali's perfect ocean views are captured from four two-storey buildings built around a palm-fringed pool, ideally demonstrating simple forms and Balinese touches.

"Arriving at 10 p.m., we were greeted by friendly, welcoming staff bearing a refreshing ginger and lemon grass drink. We didn't know it then, but that level of service, care and concern would continue throughout our five-day stay at this very special retreat. Every meal in the restaurant was delicious. The menu was interesting and the service was always outstanding in an understated way. That's the key to Alila Manggis. There is nothing pretentious about this boutique hotel but everything they do for their guests is of the best quality - from the traditional afternoon teas served poolside every day through to the myriad activities they are more than happy to arrange. We went snorkeling, walked through rice paddies and jungle (with a guide), cooked lunch in the resort's organic garden under the watchful eye of their head chef and visited local markets. Nothing is too much trouble to arrange. All Manggis is a perfect mix of the old and new Bali. It has to be doing something right: this resort has been catering to international travelers for 20 years or so! We will definitely be back."

"We had a unique experience during our stay in this hotel. We had a special dinner in a traditional Balinese house in Tenganan in private setting with own cook, Marianni, and butler Joni. Arriving at the house at dusk, with candles burning at the the entrance is magic. The hosts are very kind and hospitable and they tell about the house, traditions and their craftsmanship with the ikat and carving. Joni, in beautiful traditional costume, takes charges in a very pleasant and professional way. The food cooked by Marianni was delicious and the live music was a very nice touch. A night to remember!"

"We have been to Bali many times but this was our first time to East Bali. It's a lot quieter than Seminyak but that's why we chose to come here first. Alila Manggis is a wonderfully designed hotel and comprises about 55 rooms and so even if it is busy it is still quiet. We had a second floor room which had a wonderful view of the sea and pool. The room had a balcony with table chairs and a day bed. Perfect if you want to get out of the sun. There is no real beach at the property but there is a beautiful pool in the center of the gardens. If you do want to swim in the sea there are a few stairs leading down the sea wall to the water. Other than at high tide you can swim sea if you want. The Alila Spa was superb. Well trained staff and two massage rooms right by the sea. The sound of the waves crashing adds to your spa experience. There is only one restaurant at the property, Sea Salt which is a pavilion surrounded by a Lotus Pool. A lot of the food is organic and is always fresh. Breakfast was a la carte. With a daily changing menu there were always plenty of options. Lunch and dinner had a great choice of Asian and Western food. I have read some complaints about the price at the restaurant, but you need to put the pricing into perspective. Given the location and surroundings, we did not find it expensive but, as you should expect, it is dearer than eating in a local warung. The property is a bit of a distance from Candidasa, but transport options were always available and there was no feeling of isolation. For a quiet and stylish experience, this property meets expectations."

"We stayed at this resort for four nights and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The staff were friendly and went out of their way to ensure our visit was great. Our room was perfect and clean, with a view over the pool and out to the ocean (just like the photos). The restaurant there is very good, however, we only ate there once because we usually went into the little town and experienced the food there (it was also a lot cheaper). We had an early dinner by the pool one night and the food was excellent. It was my birthday and because we didn't go to dinner at the restaurant, we had a knock at the door later that evening and two of the lovely ladies delivered a delicious chocolate mouse cake with a 'happy birthday' message and a card from the manager. They even sang happy birthday which was lovely! The afternoon tea by the pool was also a highlight each day with coffee or herbal tea and different cakes each day. The spa was also a gorgeous experience, set right next to the ocean, so relaxing! The only thing that was a little frustrating was the mozzie coils were very difficult to light. At another villa that we stayed at previously, the staff would light the coils in the early evening when the beds were turned down. This was a nice touch. Overall, our experience was excellent and I'm looking forward to returning one day."

"If you want nothing but a quiet surroundings in a stunning hotel for a romantic week - this is the place! Due to its placement in the countryside in East Bali, Alila Manggis is considered a more quiet hotel. But don't let this fool you! The Alila Manggis offers 100% satisfaction. The surroundings are amazing, greatest centered pool, well equipped rooms, incredible food and best service money can buy."

"My husband and I recently stayed at the Alila Manggis for 5 nights following a wonderful, but exhausting 17 day tour of Australia. We chose the Alila Manggis because we were looking for somewhere peaceful and quiet where we could totally relax before heading home to the UK. This wonderful little hotel surpassed our expectations. We loved the Balinese character of the hotel's architecture and the service was second to none. The staff could not do enough for us, even taking the trouble to learn our names and use them. This personal touch was very much appreciated. We also so enjoyed the food in the restaurant and have to say that we were never tempted to try anywhere else to eat - cocktails to the sound of live, relaxing Balinese music, followed by a wonderful candlelit dinner with the sound of the ocean in the background - why bother?!And the breakfasts - yummy! My husband did go out on a morning snorkeling trip too and said that this was one of the best he had been on, Great Barrier Reef and the Maldives included! We were given a free 60-minute Balinese massage at the Spa which also helped us to unwind after our frenetic Australian trip. This hotel truly is a little gem and I didn't really want to advertise the fact but we felt we owed it to the wonderful staff to do so. Our thanks go to them for giving us the relaxing holiday we so wanted and needed. Would we go back - in a heartbeat?"

"We stayed here for three nights with our Backroads Cycling group. The room was very well laid out and the day bed on the balcony was so comfortable. We spent many hours just reading or sleeping on it. We did a few excursions with the hotel. The Klungkung Market which is a must see and a cooking class - both were great experiences. A huge thank you to Budi who looked after so many things for us. The ladies in the gift shop helped us package up our biking gear and ship it home so that we didn't have to carry it for another two weeks.Budi was also instrumental in helping us figure out what to do with our extra days in and around Mangiss. See Villa Idanna if youre looking for a quiet place to stay. This property is also run by Alilia staff. The food here was exceptional. I loved the breakfasts and the coffee was the best we had in Bali. The resort has a lovely pool but limited beach. We each had two massages while we were there and it was heavenly. Once you are laying down on the table they pull up the large bamboo blinds and you have the sea breeze to sooth your mind. Love, love, loved this resort."

"We stayed at Alila in June 2014 and we have nothing but wonderful things to say about the property. The open air reception looked down over a beautiful pool area surrounded by immaculate rolling gardens leading to the ocean. The rooms, although a little small, were well designed and lead out to a wonderful private balcony with a day bed. The restaurant is superb with wonderful delicious food and service. The property had a serene, calm peaceful feeling about it and definitely there to provide some serious relaxation.I unfortunately became ill while staying here and the staff were amazing. They organized a doctor to come to me at 1.00 am and simply could not do enough for me.I cannot speak highly enough about how wonderful the staff were to me. A special thank you to to Dewa and Sudewi. We will definitely return to Alila the next time we are in Bali. "

"Can't say enough good things about the resort, staff, food, grounds, view, and everything else about this property. I didn't wear shoes once. The room was carefully situated overlooking the pool, with a cozy balcony lounge area to relax and take in the ocean and the view.Every single staff member was top notch-amazing. Incredibly friendly, happy, helpful, and knowledgable. They seemed to always be once step ahead. The restaurant served fabulous meals all day. I never once had the urge to dine anywhere else in the area, it was that good. The tide receded in the evenings and was nice to take a walk on the beach and see the local kids playing football in the sand and families and puppies all having time together. It was hard to leave, would definitely recommend to anyone traveling. Worth every penny! "

"We arrived in Alila Manggis after a very long flight & felt immediately at ease. The staff was super friendly, the hotel is quite small and has a really nice pool and nice views across the ocean. We got a free upgrade because the hotel wasn't fully booked & got a free bottle of sparkling wine because of our honeymoon. The food in the restaurant is also really good and we followed a cooking class with the chef. Went to the market and cooked our lunch afterwards in the open air restaurant. If you like to cook, it's a must-do! The hotel is really quiet & excellent for adults without children. Definitely will come back someday!"

"I don't really know what to start with. Alila Manggis is a 4 star resort with a 5+ service. Not even one mistake or delay. Very careful with food allergies and preferences, saying it once was enough for the whole stay. All staff knew our names, were extremely friendly and also very helpful.Breakfast was great-not a buffet-with different things to choose from every day so one doesn't get bored. The food is really fresh and tasty, the coffee is among the best and there are some very nice organic tea blends also. There's fresh coconut jam, banana jam, papaya jam, loved them all.The hotel has its own organic garden (a 10 min drive) and you can go there for breakfast. Every day there's complimentary tea, coffee and sweets by the pool, at around 5 pm if I remember well. All rooms face the pool. We were upgraded and had a room on the 1st floor with a nice balcony. There are beds on all the balconies and they give a mosquito nest so I actually slept outside. That was a great experience. The rooms on the ground floor have direct access to the garden and a nice outside sitting area. The bed was good and the room clean. Toiletries are all made by Alila with natural ingredients, the soap was absolutely amazing. All these products and a lot more are available at the spa and in the boutique shop."

"We first spend a long New Year retreat at Alila Manggis Bali in 2011 and decided to come back to this wonderful charming Eastern Bali resort for New Year 2014. The team and wonderful service did it again to reach a 5 star experience. Salt the on location restaurant is by far our best dinner experience on Bali both for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Highly recommendable. A huge thanks to the head of concierge Hatmawan and his team to exceed our wildest expectations and we cannot wait to return to our very special retreat in the near future."

"This hotel is a great find and a lovely contrast to the hustle and commercialism of other parts of Bali. We had a superior room which opened out to the gardens / pool / sea and was really comfortable and clean with an outdoor seating area. Wifi is free and worked fine.We had lunch the first day we arrived and were taken aback by how good the food was. It was so tasty, imaginative and presented well. The food was consistently good throughout our stay from breakfast to dinner. The staff were all very friendly and service was excellent. They seemed to genuinely want to help and for you to enjoy your stay as much as possible. The grounds and property are kept well and there are sea views.Although the hotel is right by the sea there is no beach as such and the water is rough and not suitable for swimming. There is a big pool though and the rough seas made for some spectacular scenes as the waves crashed against the rocks, there is a nice cabana to relax and watch this right by the sea edge.We had our complimentary massage which was very good and booked up subsequent treatments. There is a choice to have treatments right by the sea with the sound of the waves or in treatment rooms. We also did the snorkelling trip which involves taking a small boat from the hotel together with the boat driver and a guide who snorkels with you. This was absolutely amazing, I have snorkelled and dived in quite few places but never seen so many different types of fish, they were everywhere. The hotel and this part of Bali are both such charming places and we were sad to leave. We enjoyed this much more than some of the fancier and more expensive places we stayed. Everything was just right and it was great to get away from all the crowds."

"This is a stylish hotel set in a peaceful coastal location with well tended open, spacious grounds, we stayed for five nights at the end of October. The bedrooms are not large but upper floor rooms have good balconies with a daybed, ideal for relaxing and with lovely views over the pool and sea.Food at the Alila is particularly good and the waiting staff are both friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Cookery classes are available which we found fun and very informative. There is no beach as such here and few people ventured into the sea but the snorkelling trip organised by the hotel to a nearby coral reef 20 mins boat ride away gave a great opportunity to see plenty of exotic fish. The complimentary tea and cake trolley which appeared every afternoon was very popular and we enjoyed sampling many varied delicacies. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Alila, the friendly staff, varied, beautifully presented food and inviting pool all make us hope to return one day."

"Just returned from a week long stay at the Alila Manggis. Absolutely idyllic, the resort was beautiful, location perfect and the staff were very attentive and friendly. The Sea Salt Restaurant, what can I say, breakfast was fabulous, try the sticky black rice pudding with coconut milk.We ate in the Seasalt Restaurant every evening and were never disappointed, the food was exceptional and the staff were very knowledgeable about local produce and wine.We had a cookery lesson with chef Nyoman, great fun and the food was unbelievably good, even though we had made it ourselves, came home with a cookery book and a set of knives to try it at home. Spa also worth a visit, massage whilst listening to waves crashing is very relaxing. Already looking at dates for a return visit next year."

"We had such a wonderful stay at the Alila Manggis! From the initial pick up at the airport, welcome at arrival, daily staff interactions and transfer onward, the staff was absolutely amazing. They make you feel so comfortable and taken care of, but not in an overwhelming or annoying manner. We did a package that included 3 meals a day, since this was our first honeymoon stop and we wanted to just relax at the property. Everything we ate was amazing. We did not try any of the Western-style food items, so I can't vouch for those, but the Indonesian and Asian dishes were wonderful! The breakfasts were my favorite during our whole trip in Indonesia (better than 5 star hotels we stayed at) - I am still dreaming of the banana juice! The daily tea and sweets were fantastic. At some hotels I think this is more of an afterthought but here the treats were made fresh and were different and delicious each day.The grounds themselves were very well maintained and the whole property is so peaceful that we mostly just lounged by the pool and relaxed. We took advantage of a couple of the Alila Experiences. The guided trek from Kastala to Tenganan we really enjoyed - it was a great way to see the real village way of life and the rice terraces were beautiful. We also did deep sea fishing - not my favorite, mostly because the boat was small, but it was still an experience! The rooms were comfortable and clean, not overly fancy. The shower / bath products were divine! They smelled so fresh and I love that they were in reusable containers. East Bali and the Candidasa area are much quieter than the Bali hot spots like Kuta and Ubud. For us this was ideal, but others may be looking for more action. My husband and I both had massages and facials and really thought the spa services were top notch. The semi-open location right along the water made it extra relaxing. This was really the best value we found on our whole honeymoon. We had such a fabulous stay and would love to come back!"

"The hotel staff told me this was our 7th visit to the Alila. Rooms and suites are well thought out (without being over the top) and comfortable but cannot be described as luxurious. If you can, get a deluxe room - the day beds are worth every extra cent! To lie outside, looking over the beautiful lawns and pool, listening to the breeze rustling through the coconut fronds is one of life's small treasures.I can't speak highly enough of the staff. Professional but always friendly they are genuinely interested in your comfort. Front desk (including the lovely Dewi) are a happy and helpful crew. Restaurant staff know their business and everything tastes better because of the beautiful smiles that accompany every dish. Housekeeping cannot be faulted and the cleanliness of the rooms is excellent. The large open air restaurant offers good food in a beautiful setting. It features many East Bali dishes (the megibung platter is a must if you get the chance) but all the dishes we sampled were thoughtful and well presented. You can eat more cheaply in Candi Dasa but, given the setting, never so well. The grounds give the hotel a wonderful feel. Vast expanses of carefully tended lawns and barricades of flowering shrubs frame the large square swimming pool which is surrounded by numerous sun beds and large umbrellas. The pool staff move the beds anywhere you like, provide freshly laundered large towels & bring iced water - all with a smile and a happy greeting.A free afternoon tea is provided daily, featuring Balinese cakes and confections. Watching the ocean whilst seated under a coconut palm with a mug of "Bali Kopi" was a real pleasure. My wife tells me the Spa delivered a 1st rate treatment. To be truthful Allila Manggis is the reason we keep returning to Bali. It's restful, beautiful, small and utterly delightful. Go now."

"Perfection. We wish we stayed at the amazing Alila much longer. The view of the pool and ocean is perfect. The a la carte breakfast every morning was such a special treat and we were treated by the staff to the highest of quality. We did snorkeling with the resort at blue lagoon, which is a must! We will recommend this resort to everyone and we will be back."

"The pool and garden area are well maintained. The rooms have a good size and a nice balcony. The restaurant has very good food. The restaurant offers a 360-degree-view of the area. It has a good atmosphere. The service is ok, but you have to wait quite a while to be seated, to order the food and to get it. But, while on vacation you should not be in a hurry."
