Kirsten Reiss

I am fascinated by the highly refined complexity of yoga and meditation - and its simultaneous simplicity. My practice is a space to purify the different levels of being, and to cultivate present moment awareness.

Kirsten holds a German Diploma in Architecture and a Masters Degree in Art History. Her yoga endeavors started in the early 2000s in India, where she was introduced to Hatha yoga in a Shivananda Ashram. Following her persistent passion for yoga, she went through a comprehensive three-year full-time education in classical Hatha and Kundalini yoga with Swami Vivekananda Saraswati in Thailand. Kirsten later studied Kundalini yoga with Reinhard Gammenthaler, a disciple of the legendary Dhirendra Brahmachari, and Pranayama under the guidance of B.N.S. Iyengar in Mysore, India.

Kirstens meditation practice is based on Ramana Maharshis non-dualistic teachings, and Sahajanandas yoga of the spiritual heart. She has participated in more than a dozen spiritual heart meditation retreats, and lately completed her first 49-day solitary meditation retreat. Currently she studies Ayurveda with Dr.C.K. Shashirekha in Mysore, India. An experienced registered yoga teacher at the highest level (E-RYT-500), Kirsten has completed 500 hours of certified Teacher Training in the tradition of Hatha Yoga (IYF and RYS-500) in 2008.

Since 2008, Kirsten has been teaching yoga full-hearted and year-round in Asia. She has been developing educational programs, leading meditation retreats, presenting teacher trainings, and guiding Hatha yoga and Kundalini classes. She was managing and coaching yoga teachers in Thailand for Agama yoga, and was leading the Hridaya Yoga and Meditation School in Mexico. In 2011, she founded the Akasha Yoga Academy together with her partner Burkhard.

Burkhard Langemann

My passion is the integration of spirituality and science. The focus of my personal practice and academic research is a unified understanding of Eastern and Western Philosophies.

Burkhard holds a Masters Degree in Psychology and Alternative Education from the Free University of Berlin, where his thorough exploration of Ken Wilbers Integral Theory culminated in a thesis on Holistic Development. In 2001, Burkhard began to explore yoga in India. He has dedicated more than 5,000 hours to the study of classical Hatha yoga, Kundalini yoga, and yogic philosophy.

Burkhard started his meditation practice following the Vipassana style of Theravada Buddhism, and has practiced under Ajaan Tong Sirimangalo in Northern Thailand. He has participated in more than a dozen spiritual heart retreats lead by his primary meditation teacher, Sahajananda, who introduced him to the non-dual traditions of Advaita Vedanta and Kashmiri Shaivism. Following his example, Burkhard recently concluded a 49-day solitary meditation retreat in the jungle of Thailand.

Burkhard is a Yoga Alliance certified and registered yoga teacher (IYF and RYS-500). In 2008, he completed a 500-hour Hatha Yoga Teacher Training in Thailand. Three years later he co-organized and participated in the 500-hour Hridaya Yoga and Meditation Teacher Training. Since 2008, Burkhard is sharing his experience in a variety of contexts, including teacher training courses, meditation retreats, Hatha yoga classes, workshops, and private life-coaching sessions. He has been teaching in various locations across Asia, Europe and North America. Together with his life partner Kirsten, he founded the Akasha Yoga Academy.

The training course is hosted by the PraShanti Eco Resort, an exclusive yet homey venue, located right between open rice paddies and a steep jungle valley. The peaceful venue combines the nurturing beauty of tropical nature with the possibilities of urban life. The small resort is just a 10-minute walk away from the historic center of the Balinese yoga capital Ubud. "I find Akasha Yoga Academy an exceptional yoga school in many respects. Everything is very well thought of. Even before arriving for the YTT course, through extensive material you receive and the clear heartful communication you feel very cared for and supported. The material and teachings given at the course are very well researched and extensive. In addition to the fundamentals like postures, breathing, meditation, etc. the trainings have all sorts of great extras such as local rituals, weekly chanting and movie screenings."

"Kirsten and Burkhart are the sweetest people, with warm hearts and very inspiring aspiration. The extended Akasha Yoga team takes care of everything before, during and after the trainings which leave very little to complain about. One thing I like a lot is the community of Akasha graduates which plays a great role for support and inspiration after the course."

"To say it simply, this is not any yoga school, these people know their stuff very well, pick the most amazing locations to hold courses in, take care of you all the way through and help you"

    "transform your life. "

"A month long course offering Yoga practice twice a day for 6 days a week plus practicing breath control and meditation plus countless hours of teachings on anatomy, Yoga history and philosophy, teaching techniques plus corrections and adjustments is no doubt an intensive affair."

"Not only does this kind of Yoga Teacher Training literally take your Yoga practice to the next level, it transforms your whole being on all levels: The body becomes so much more soft and open, but more importantly body and mind come into a sweet connection with each other, life energy and emotions can flow so much more freely and the mind can finally come to moments of rest! Eye-opening, de-stressing, and making the being feel whole again."

"The way Akasha Yoga Academy is creating a safe space for the students to allow all this to happen, is truly exceptional. The main teachers, Kirsten and Burkhard, are visibly sharing their practice and insights from their very own experience and they share from their heart with an incredible amount of warmth and generosity!"

"Becoming a Yoga teacher with Akasha Yoga Academy was much more for me than just gaining a certificate. It was the beginning of a very beautiful and rewarding journey. What they taught and shared with me in the month of the course and afterwards is with me until today."

"My teacher training with Kirsten and Burkhard and the amazing dedicated team who supports them was a journey that exceeded every expectation I had."

"The course covers all that you need to know to start your journey sharing the teachings of Hatha Yoga: Yoga anatomy, Yoga philosophy, posture alignment, class sequencing, the history of Yoga and even a marketing class! You can feel the immense dedication that they put into designing the course just by going through their material!"

"I felt guided in every possible way to give my first Yoga class and was given great constructive feedback each time I gave a class."

"We also studied the Yoga sutras, the Yamas and Niyamas and were introduced to Ayurveda."

"Everything was well thought of, be it the wonderful venue in the beautiful town of Ubud, home to many Yogis and to an amazing nature that supports the journey immensely, or the way the classes are scheduled throughout the 4-week journey to give you all the necessary material and experience needed to start your journey into sharing Yoga, or the beautiful bhajan nights and ceremonies where you connect on a deeper level with yourself and your other fellow students."

"Kirsten and Burkhard are people who embody their teachings fully. They are kindhearted, fully dedicated to sharing their passion and to serve their students in the best possible way. It has been a tremendous privilege to study with them."

"I am so pleased I had chosen Akasha Yoga Academy. Right from from the very first email exchange I felt ‘home’ and knew this course is the one I have been waiting for a long time. Kirsten und Burkhard are two amazing yoga teachers, teaching from their heart, with wisdom and with a lot of passion. I think every yoga teacher should in fact do this training as it goes back in depth to the roots of yoga and gives a very good ground knowledge that every yoga teacher should know. Chakras play a vital role in this course so for anyone interested in working also with energy this course is for you!"

"Being taught by people who embody their teachings was inspirational. I felt the lecture topics were presented at precisely the right time to address whatever I was feeling physically/ emotionally/ mentally/ spiritually, throughout the course. I felt very supported, encouraged and challenged enough to create positive changes. The material was presented in a very effective and practical way.The teachers took time to answer all questions in depth to ensure our understanding of such complex concepts, and I loved the interview opportunities, where I could open up about more personal things and receive guidance. Simply being in the presence of Burkhard and Kirsten contributed to my perspective and understanding of yoga."

"I was lucky enough to attend Burkhard and Kirstens Spiritual Heart Retreat in May 2012. It was such a beautiful, humbling experience, and, for me, the perfect introduction to Spiritual Heart meditation. The workshop structure was a really well-balanced mix of meditation, Hatha Yoga and short lectures which all seemed to flow naturally from one another. The talks were really well-prepared and covered many aspects of spirituality which I was questioning and gave me much to reflect on in the evenings of the retreat. On a personal note, I found both Burkhard and Kirsten to be truly inspirational facilitators, both of whom have an obvious gift for teaching and genuine passion for sharing a style of meditation in which they are both beautiful examples of its benefits in daily life."
