In this moment having a balanced practice on and off his yoga mat, that is present in all layers of my daily life is the current focus of his yoga.

This retreat will be held in Pestera Village. The village is called Pestera and it means "the cave" in Romanian, named after a beautiful bat cave located approximately 100 meters from the center. The village is part of the National Park of Piatra Craiului, a majestic chain of mountains and forest valleys that still harbor an abundance of wildlife from bears to mountain goats and more. Seven kilometers away is one of the most debated Transylvanian icon, Dracula's Castle in Bran. It is an impressive fortified castle with a large heritage and stories to match.

During this retreat, you will be served three organic vegan and vegetarian daily meals. Upon booking your retreat, you will be asked of your diet preferences and Akasha Wellness Retreat can cater for special diets such as lacto or gluten intolerant. All meals are at set times in the dining area and are shared between all guests and teachers. The menu consists of a combination of Romanian vegan dishes and western.

A typical breakfast and lunch is buffet style consisting of organic produce such as porridge, chia seed smoothie bowl, fruits, brown rice, quinoa, sweet potato, salads, homemade wholegrain bread, and many more mouthwatering dishes made by their chef. For dinner, they offer a sit down family style meal with hot soups, lentils, stuffed peppers, vegan sarmale, polenta, and many more.

Their delicious plant based menu is designed to fortify your overall health and wellbeing using organic unprocessed seasonal produce with the highest nutrient content possible. A combination of ingredients that not only work in a delicious mouthful but act as anti-inflammatory and alkaline foods that balance hormones, blood sugar, and blood pressure.

Forming good habits about food

The application of chakra balancing foods and integrative medicine principles creates a colorful and complete menu balanced in carbohydrates, good fats, and proteins full of minerals, vitamins, and bioflavonoids (the color pigment of fruits and vegetables that have an important role for strengthening the immune system). Food that is not only delicious and easily digested but deeply nourishing, sustaining, healing, and energy-boosting.

Their aim is that you will pick up good habits from being on the retreat and that you will continue to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle back home using essential principles about food and nutrition that are easily applicable in your daily lives.

Organic and locally sourced food

Eating organic is about avoiding chemical additives and genetically modified organisms, eliminating an unnatural, potentially harmful component from your health equation. Organic produce grows slowly because that is how nature intended it, unaltered by pesticides and chemicals designed to prolong shelf life. Organic is also about supporting and encouraging your local farmer and fruit and vegetables supplier.

When you eat organic, you also eat seasonal, you become aware and appreciative of what is available now, rather than all the varieties you could have instead. You appreciate the food by what it is, when you have it and how much more nutrient and flavor it has when it is eaten and cooked fresh. They visit the farms they work with, they look at how farmers produce their food and they only choose sustainable and certified organic produce.

The spa and wellness facility at Akasha is not a traditional spa, they do things differently there. You create the ritual you want to have from a variety of home made organic bath and body products. Their massage therapists that are internationally qualified in a range of treatments from deep tissue to shiatsu, ayurveda, and Thai massage, will assist you in your choice of essential oil and body products, so that your treatment complements specific conditions.

They created their own range of products that are lovingly made at Akasha using only organic natural products such as coconut oil, organic herbs, and specialized clays.

Massage and body treatments

These include shiatsu and deep tissue, relaxing coconut oil, hot stone massage, Swedish massage, and Thai massage. These bodywork therapies are designed to complement your yoga practice and are often performed by yoga instructors themselves. Their therapists understand the importance of helping you to connect to your body, releasing tension and improving your posture.

Just a few benefits of regular massage therapy as an active part of your yoga practice are releasing tension in problem areas, loosening the connective tissue in your outer thighs and increasing hip flexibility, improve your body awareness, and highlight imbalances that can then be addressed in your yoga practice. One kind of treatment costs 25 EUR for the package that lasts for 30 minutes and 45 EUR for the package that lasts for 60 minutes.

Bathing ritual treatments

Bathing is actually an ancient therapeutic practice called balneotherapy. Almost all ancient cultures prescribe therapeutic bathing rituals to promote overall wellness and calm the skin, body’s largest organ. Herbs and oils have long been combined with bath therapy to relax the mind, soothe sore muscles, and promote supple skin. Bathing rituals can also complement your meditation and yoga practice in clearing away aura energies, chakra balancing, and healing.

With each bath package costing 30 EUR for a 60-minute session, you can choose from

  • Homemade bath salts packs infused with your choice of organic essential oils
  • Herbal tea bath rituals with your choice of organic herbal tea blends and flowers
  • Milk bath rituals with your choice of vegan milk and essential oil infusions

You can also combine your bathing ritual with an indulgent organic face mask, bentonite clay, seaweed, or activated charcoal facial mask blends which each costs starting from 10 EUR.

Aromatherapy

All of their therapies are complemented by aromatherapy. Each day, as they work on your chakra balancing asanas, your teacher will recommend a blend of organic essential oils, or you can choose your own to be diffused in the therapy room during your treatment and during yoga or meditation practice.

Outdoor Jacuzzi and sauna

Every guest has access to unlimited outdoor Jacuzzi and sauna.

Spa packages

You can choose a spa package that complements your yoga practice. Your body will thank you, they promise.

  • Ritualista, this is a therapeutic treat for your body, a package of a 60-minute body massage therapy and one bath ritual treatment that costs 65 EUR.
  • Inspired by the forest, this is a package of a 90-minute body massage therapy, two bath ritual treatments, a 30-minute private guided barefoot moss walking meditation, and one organic pine syrup mocktail that costs 145 EUR.

    Chilled, beautiful and special retreat

CONS Cons: The yoga retreats website said the hot tub was available every day whereas it was only one for 1 day and that there'd be a fire pit night which happened indoors instead.

PROS Pros: The chalet is gorgeous with stunning mountain views. The rooms were finished thoughtfully and with attention to detail - very comfortable and calm feel. The team looking after us (inc. great yoga teachers) were friendly and did everything they could to ensure we had a great stay. The vegan food was super tasty and meeting so many different people in a relaxed environment led to having some long-into-the-night chats and memorable moments. Eg hot tub night!

CONS Cons: The yoga studio is not as spacious as I expected it to be but the instructors worked around that issue quite well.

"My husband and I spent a week at the Akasha Wellness Retreat. We loved it there. The retreat is situated in this beautiful area, on top of a hill. The view is amazing and it's very peaceful. The food was very good and very healthy. I loved waking up to the sound of the gong every morning and starting my day with yoga. The schedule was perfectly balanced, there was time enough for leisure, but you didn't have time to get bored. I loved the different kind of yoga, the meditation workshop, the gong bath, all of it. And if that wasn't enough to help you relax, you could get an amazing massage or just go from the hot tub to the sauna and back. The view from the sauna was something else..."

"My mom, sister and I spent a lovely 6 days at Akasha - the views from the retreat are breathtaking with rolling hills and mountain views. We went on lovely walks and visited Bran castle one of the days which Daniela and Irina were happy to organise for us. We were lucky to just have one other guest staying during our retreat and we really got to know Irina, Daniela, Claire, Matt, Wendy and Mario - everyone was so warm and kind. The yoga was fantastic and the teachers a really high standard. We had a fun acro yoga workshop during our stay as well as ashtanga yoga. The food was fantastic - healthy and delicious! We had lovely massages and spa treatments during our stay. All in all we couldn't have asked for more and came home feeling healthy, energized and relaxed. Thanks Akasha crew."

"Amazing experience in a really great setting."

"The area is just perfect with all the mountains surrounding the retreat. A very warm and friendly atmosphere, it feels like home, with Daniela as the kind and welcoming host and Irina supervising and keeping us fit with the walks around the area. The food is excellent and gives you the right idea about living a healthy life. Whilst in most detox centres they focus on eating less and you tend to often feel famished, here they teach you not to eat less but how to keep your eating healthy. Thank you Nicoleta for your great cooking!"

"The yoga teachers are great (I have learned a lot to help me improve my asanas) and they even give you the basic teaching for yoga. Thank you Claire! Thank you Matt! "

"The massages I took with Wendy, who is for sure related to Peter Pan :), kept me going every day through my yoga classes. Yes I mean she is great! Thank you Wendy! "

"I am already missing you all and my daily training and miss the 3 dogs - Luna, Bursuc and Tony, the 3 puppy dogs (to be adopted if/when Irina is ready to let them go) and Beasley the cat. Thank you all for helping me recharge my batteries! Namaste! I am most probably coming back in the near future!"

"My mum and I visited Akasha Yoga Retreat just before Christmas. To say we had an amazing time is an understatement. The views were stunning, we took a few lovely walks and the mountains were just breathtaking. The room that we stayed in was beautiful (just like the photos) and very comfortable. The food was absolutely delicious - the best vegan food I have ever had! So varied and tasty! Irina, and her mum were perfect hosts and made us feel like were were visiting family. The yoga was also amazing, Alyson is an excellent teacher; so patient as we were beginners and we really felt that we had improved during the retreat! I could keep on singing the praises of Akasha, but I recommend you come and see for yourself!"

"If you are interested in a combined yoga meditation retreat in a beautiful mountain scenery, this is the right place to go! Most friendly owners made the guests feel at home from the very beginning. The food was fully organic and vegetarian,- top-class throughout the retreat. Very tasty even for a caveman like myself. Snow-topped mountains filled the scenery at the house's large backyard terrace. Well balanced program of basic yoga and meditation, leaving enough room also for relaxing, taking massage or going for walks. You could go for a day hiking trip directly from the house."

"I spent 5 days during the New Years in the Akasha Wellness Retreat. Highlight of the stay was the food and the friendliness of the staff, most definitely. They welcomed people with open arms. I liked the timed programme and it was perfect combination of guided activities with free time. I would have liked to have a wider selection of e.g. spa treatments and perhaps slightly more interesting selection of additional programme. But it was just after the opening so it will surely change. Thumbs up for the digital detox rule. My room was clean and comfortable. The yoga sessions were good. The location was very peaceful with beautiful mountain landscape. Irina was very quick and helpfull with all the email exchange in beforehand. I would recommend the place for someone like me who feels she/needs to escape from the stressful everyday life and have some alone time. Not often you feel like you are in a home away from home."

"Dear Irina and Dana, you organised the perfect combination of wonderful yoga, amazing food, excellent accommodation and treatments; and all these make this place unique and special. I consider my yoga classes, the most inspiring and full of grace I had so far, due to amazing Alysia. The food was such varied, and delicious and healthy, prepared with love after Dana’s incredible recipes. I loved my wonderful massage, thanks to Mario, and enjoyed a lot my bath treatments. I am so happy that I got this opportunity to be here, you created an awareness and inspired me with a positive change. I wish you all a lot of happiness and love. "I was a bit anxious about the destination at first, I was amazed by the really warm welcome I received at Akasha. Irina and her mom are dedicated hosts and make sure that you feel at ease before, during and even after your stay. Coming from Paris, I booked my flight to Bucarest and took the train early the next morning (about 3 hours and 15 euros in first class) to be on time for the first activities offered in the program. A cab organized by Irina picked me up when I arrived. I was staying on my own in one of the twin bedrooms with balcony. The view of the mountains is breathtaking and the room is spacious and clean. Towels, bathrobes, sleepers and amenities such as shampoo, shower gel but also scrub soap are provided. I personally really liked the romantic decoration of the room and must say that I loved the bed (quite important for a stay like this, where you basically sleep a lot). The program I attended (New Year’s special) was a lot of fun. The yoga classes with different teachers were a great opportunity to discover more about the discipline. I also really enjoyed the side activities, such as connecting with nature, singing with Anne Malone, going for a walk with the lovely dogs and creating our own prayer flag (Nepalese style). I also booked some massages and a bathing ceremony to complete this week of relaxation and loved them. The massage therapist, Mario, is a really talented individual, he can also sing Fado, but that's another story. The food at Akasha is probably what surprised me the most, as I am normally a cheese addict. I thought it would be hard for me to go vegan for one week, but the meals were honestly so delicious that I did not miss my cheese once! The dining room is also pretty impressive with a large bow window allowing you to eat with mountain view! Having tried other yoga retreats before, I must say that Akasha is one of the best places I have been to. The price / quality ratio is honestly amazing and I would love to come back when I have the time. A big thank you to Akasha’s team and to the people who shared this adventure with me. It was a blast to stay with you."

Irina and Daniela are perfect host, they made me feel at home, the room was very beautiful and clean, comfortable bed, everything you could need in the bathroom was provided. The dining room with the breathtaking view of the mountains, the fire and the colors gave me the impression I was in a magic place or in a fairy tale. The food was really delicious, vegan and healthy. I enjoyed a lot the yoga classes with Alysia, where I had the feeling learned so much. The longs walks in the snow with the dogs were relaxing and fun. Mario is very good in massage, and in music too. I would be very happy to return to Akasha, I already missed it."

"I’m still grateful to Daniela and Irina for setting up this special place and for filling it with live and dreams. This place is the perfect spot to reset yourself, to become quiet inside and calm your mind, to just be, have others cook for you and set the timetable for you. Enough time to read, write, walk, enjoy. For me it was the perfect start into the new year and within a week I almost got all the flexibility back I thought lost. Thank you to all of you for the talks and inspiration, for your stories and kindness. It’s funny how 7 days can make a difference. I will definitely come back one day! Lots of love from Germany"

"Simply stunning!! I´d like to go back to the heart of Transilvania and join another retreat again in Akasha. Thanks Daniela and Irina for your enthusiasm and dedication, and thanks Aly and Simon for sharing, once again, your yoga with us."

"A cozy spacious modern house in a tiny Transylvanian village run by two warm-hearted powerful women. There are comfortable rooms with decent beds, healthy food, beautiful views, wonderful walks, intense yoga, great Swedish massages, herbal baths with the sun shining through the open windows, hot tub while a full moon reflects on the fresh snow, silent mornings, time for reading, and watching clouds. Also, a time for reconnecting and laughing. “Akasha” really is a special place. I am very grateful. Thanks, Daniela, Irina, Paula, Ali, and Mario."

"Everything in Akasha is done to make you happy, at ease, relaxed and forget about the world. I felt spoiled by wonderful massages given by Mario, the healthy food, as well as very professional yoga classes given by both Aly and Paula. How can I forget the relaxing time in the bathtub?"

"I travel a lot and this retreat is special for many reasons. It has a superb location with 360-degree views of the Carpathian mountains. The hospitality is genuine and warm, like a family. The food was inventive, fresh, flavorful and most importantly, healthy! I loved the hiking, horseback riding and unlimited fresh air. I never felt more rested!"

"It is a magical place in the middle of nature with a rare extremely beneficial energy. A place where not only the physical body relaxes and rests, but the whole being including the physical body, mind, and spirit, can be reset, recovered, and can regain vital energy."

"I really loved my stay at Akasha. It's such an amazing spot for a retreat center, with incredible views of the mountains, and lovely walks nearby. It was very clear that a lot of thought and care had gone into every detail there. The accommodation was gorgeous, the staff were really lovely, the food had been planned in such detail, with everything organic, mostly local, and so delicious! I had some lovely yoga sessions, drank some supercharged cacao, had one of the best massages I've ever had, and spent a lot of time in the hot tub and sauna looking out at the mountain view. I would highly recommend a stay here, it was just what I needed!"

"Akasha has a picturesque, inspiring, and calming view. The Akasha yoga retreat center accommodates all yoga and health aficionados from those simply seeking a luxurious week of deep relaxation to those fixed on advancing their asana practice and understanding of yoga. The food was of the highest vegan quality, the menu clearly very well thought through. Any time of the year, the Akasha Wellness Center will meet you with a touch of elegance as well as the chance to connect with some of the most spectacular nature available in Europe."
