I was looking for a chilled and quiet spot on the island to base myself to do some writing work and also do some diving. Ak'bol was the perfect pick. It is on the quieter north part of the island and a short cycle into San pedro from there. They have a quiet private beach to sit and read on, a beach bar that serves food and drink all day. I booked in for the Yoga Barracks, which is the basic standard of accommodation, they do also have private Cabana's which are very well kitted out and worth the extra money if you are looking for a bit of Luxury on your stay. My yoga bunk room, was spacious and clean and had a fan with good speed to keep a cool breeze in the room at night. There is also a lockable cupboard for security and valuables whilst you are out exploring. The Yoga takes place on a covered pier, which is fantastic to relax on at any time of the day. The classes are very good and there are two each day, a morning and afternoon. The pier is also a great place to enjoy a morning or evening swim. There is some small fish and other marine life hiding under the pier. If you exhaust yourself and you need some further relaxation then the in house massage is excellent in helping you unwind. We had a fantastic guest Yoga Instructor from Chichester, New York, and they made the classes accessible to all levels of participant.

If you're looking for high end, high maintenance, look somewhere else. Ak'bol is a what you see is what you get kind of place. Accommodations are comfortable, functional, and cheap. But where Ak'bol shines is its amazing energy, friendliness, and awesome food and drink. People from all over the island (locals and visitors) flock to Ak'bol for the great Belizean cuisine and friendly faces. The bar/restaurant sits right on the beach, with views that can't be beat. Daily yoga with Kirsten and/or one of her visiting teachers under the palm thatched palapa at the end of the Ak'bol dock is not to be missed either.

My girlfriend and I spent 3 nights in a beachside cabana at Ak'Bol and loved every minute of it. Ak'Bol itself is beautiful. The sand is lovely, the pool is nice, the palapa is unbeatable, and the kitchen is great. Our beachside cabana was as anticipated, with fans and mosquito net. It also included the conch sink and an outdoor shower which was quite lovely. We really enjoyed opening the folding doors and the exquisite view of the ocean from our bed. Unfortunately there were no yoga classes while we were there because Kirsten was in Mexico teaching a class. Nevertheless, we were able to borrow yoga mats and go out on the huge palapa (biggest on Ambergris Caye as far as we knew) to do our own practice. This was truly a unique location to practice yoga that is likely unparalleled in the world. You can even jump in the ocean or snorkel under or near the palapa! Alex was an excellent bartender/waiter/jack of all trades who kept us happy and well-fed throughout our stay. All of the food was absolutely amazing. The fry jacks were delicious. The coconut french toast was a must have and the pizzas were spectacular. The fresh watermelon juice was perfectly refreshing and the dirty bananas were fun! We ate almost every meal here and it ended up being quite inexpensive, especially for Ambergris Caye! Milio, the co-owner, was a gracious host and took the time to chat with us on a daily basis. It almost felt as though we were family when we left. We also really enjoyed playing with and petting Maya, Milio's beautiful dog. Milio even offered to drop us off in downtown San Pedro the morning of our departure. Although we declined, he insisted on calling us a taxi who would give us a proper rate :) We would recommend Ak'Bol to anyone interested in yoga or spending a relaxing vacation on Ambergris Caye - particularly without the atmosphere in San Pedro. This is certainly one place that we would consider returning in a heartbeat!
