How the training works

This program will require a commitment of 200 hours learning about yoga philosophy, anatomy, how to teach yoga, and practice teaching - as well as reading material, journaling, practicing yoga, and additional research.


Students who complete their training before September 30, 2020, are eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as Registered Yoga Teachers (RYT®).

Due to COVID-19, until September 30, 2020, Yoga Alliance is accrediting this online 200-hour yoga teacher training. After September 30, 2020 - unless otherwise detailed by the Yoga Alliance, this online training gives you CYT-200 (Certified Yoga Teacher with 200 Hour Training - which is also offered for only 1,500 USD) but is not approved for registering with the Yoga Alliance. Timing of sessions (Pacific Standard Time)

Timezone: Ahlia Yoga is based in Encinitas, California, USA. Contact hours timing will be discussed with the student as it depends on a case by case basis.

People can register and start the online learning course work anytime. Once 10 or more people have registered you will begin the Live Virtual portion of the program with a schedule as follows:

  • Mondays: 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. (Zoom) (PST)
  • Tuesdays: 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Zoom) (PST)
  • Wednesdays: 3 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. (Zoom) (PST)
  • Thursdays: 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Zoom) (PST)
  • Every other Friday: 11:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. (Zoom) (PST)

Your positive experiences and success in your yoga teacher training is directly connected to your participation in the program. When you take time to read the modules, practice teach, or take class - please make the space to be physically and mentally present. Do what you can to eliminate or limit distractions and the desire to multi-task. Give yourself fully to what you are learning and notice how your active participation in this experience can also affect how you show up and participate in other aspects of your life.

Keeping track of hours during teacher training is very important. Accounting for your time spent in each of these categories is important and you will be required to turn your completed documentation of hours in prior to receiving your certification.

Required reading material:

  • Please also have or purchase a notebook or journal for logging your hours and taking notes throughout YTT.

Category 1: Practicing Yoga

  • When you take a certified yoga instructors class as a student / practitioner, please document the following:
  • (Best practice is to have a notebook or journal to keep track)
  • Class number. Number 1-50 the classes that you take as a student so you know how many you have done.
  • Class time and duration. For example: 10 - 11:30 a.m, 90 minutes or 4:15 - 5 p.m., 45 minutes.
  • Teachers name
  • Yoga style (ie: vinyasa, ashtanga, yin/restorative, iyengar, etc).
  • Class name if applicable (ie: level 2 vinyasa. Or Gentle yoga for beginners)
  • Notes about the class. Write down what you learned. What you liked. What you would do differently. Write down the theme of class is it’s apparent and the peak posture if there was one. Any notes you have should go here.

Category 2: Practice teaching

When you begin to practice teach out loud, record the amount of time you spend. Only document time you spend teaching out loud and best practice is to teach to one or more people. You can also teach to yourself if you voice or video record so that you can go back and listen to give yourself feedback.

Note: the more time you spend practice teaching out loud, the more confident you will feel teaching classes upon completion of teacher training. This work is up to you. The effort you put forth will definitely be apparent in your development of this skill and communication/teaching style.

Writing and creating sequences and practice teaching in your head are both valuable uses of your time but may not be included as documented hours spent towards practice teaching.

Category 3: Reading material and online lectures

When you spend time reading the designated course work and books for YTT, you will be responsible for documenting your time. Set a timer when you begin or jot down your start time. Be honest with your time if you take breaks or get distracted. You are required to finish the course work (books and online lectures) before you are eligible for certification, even if it takes more than 200 hours. Include time spent on quizzes, homework, and projects.

Category 4: Research

If you enjoy learning about a certain topic and wind up doing your own additional research on a subject that was covered in YTT (or pertains to and is approved by your TT lead), please document your time spent studying or researching material that is done outside of teacher training study hours.

Even though practicing yoga may be what you want to spend the most time doing, it is important to prioritize your time to maximize your experience and education. Best practice is to focus first on lectures and reading (quizzes, homework, and projects), second on practice teaching, and third on doing your yoga practice.

For your lecture modules, Ahlia recommends reading online in the following order. You’ll notice that there are additional lecture reading materials included in your online curriculum, however those listed below are the Ahlia Yoga Academy accredited curriculum. Participating in Ahlia Yoga Academy YTT Online is the same material as in-person trainings, however, you can take it at your own pace. There is no set schedule for you to adhere to so that you can easily navigate through the modules and curriculum in a way that works best for your schedule and your life. Ahlia will be available for any questions that you have and will schedule live virtual practice teaching and Q&A time with you throughout your program.
