Program

Do you want to become a GREAT TEACHER? Not just a mediocre or fast food yoga teacher, or somebody that leaves their TT not being able to teach a class?

Then this is the right place for you.

A great Yogi is not necessarily a great teacher. A Yogi with immense knowledge does not make him a great teacher.

Teaching Students is an art form altogether different from just doing Yoga or being knowledgeable in theory.

It requires a completely different skillset to ‘BE’ a teacher.

This Teacher Training focuses on your learning and immediate daily practice of teaching, having learned the ART OF TEACHING.

Yes, you will get all the theory, but with this training, you then practice teaching what you learned every day! Our entire curriculum! Classes, variations, adjustments, philosophy, meditation, pranayama and much much more. You will teach from day one. Slowly building up the techniques and confidence to teach.

A lot of teacher trainings focus on lectures and you practicing Yoga, often producing teachers that are unable to teach a class at all, teach it confidently, or who even hurt their students.

-The Ahimsa Yoga Ashram focuses on you becoming an actual teacher. Able to take on any class, with ease, confidence, and a little magic.

-In the Ahimsa Yoga Ashram TT program everything is practical, there is never any simple downloading of mountains of information and you writing it into your notebook.

The way they teach is different. Students learn and observe the theory, in lectures or workshops. Then review it alone, then discuss it in groups, question it, play with it, practice and experiment with the teachings alone and in groups, prepare to present or teach it, actually present and teach it to a full class. All the time receiving continuous feedback and improvement suggestions, throughout their teaching class and afterward, from the other students and Xian (the founder of the Ashram). If something wasn’t up to scratch, it gets repeated the next day, until the student has found their own voice with clarity, ease, and confidence.

Adjustments and variations are deeply understood and practiced on real students’ bodies and Xian, with real-time feedback. Philosophy is understood by the students, lived in the Ashram, and shared by them in their lectures and weaved in during their practice classes and instantly transferred into real-life application

Yoga anatomy is experienced rather than just seen on a print-out. It is applied and intrinsically understood as students learn to watch bodies and their movements.

Students practice teaching EVERY DAY for 2 months. They will have taught 52 times by the time they left here! And that is our ENTIRE syllabus (please see attached document). They learn and practice teaching ALL of it.

TT students leave here excellent teachers, ready to take on any class with confidence, ease, and grace.

They can make up intelligent sequences on the fly because they understand. They can adjust their sequence and level of teachings on the fly depending on the level of students. They can FEEL how deep an adjustment can/needs to go, which direction the push needs to be in to really connect with the body of their students. They can weave in philosophy, understand how to bring breath into the classes to open the body, and they will be answer pretty much every question a student might have after a class.

  • This is not just the opinion of the Ashram, but the strong feedback of all of their students.
  • Learn to teach from understanding, not just from theory

Guidance

The program is designed for you to become a Hatha yoga teacher, although the principles learned can be applied to any style of yoga. This will enable you to teach Hatha yoga classes, but also teach style independent private, one-on-one alignment classes, as well as alignment workshops for everyone.

With thorough guidance and daily preparation, you will teach every day and will, therefore, leave there an experienced teacher, ready and confident to teach. At the Ahimsa Ashram yoga teacher training course, you will not learn a pre-written script to get students through a class of general movement. You will learn to teach from your own extensive understanding, experience, practice, and by intrinsically understanding yoga. You will learn to apply all principles yourself, and from that base, you will learn to teach from knowledge and experience, rather than from notes.

At the Xian YTT you will not receive ready-made sequences or templates for how to teach, but you will learn how to make them. You will receive constant personal feedback from Xian and your fellow students. You will learn through lectures and demonstrations, but most of all through practice and repetition, you will learn through listening to yourself and others.

Through constant personalized feedback and attention to your development, and as you practice and learn every day, your teaching will improve and you will become more confident.

They use many ways to prepare you for any type of class or student out there. For example, you will teach classes to other students, who will deliberately do things ‘wrong’ so that you can learn how to adjust, tailor your classes to different levels, and give variations.

You will practice to give talks on various yogic subjects and teach many asana, pranayama, and meditation classes.

It’s going to be a lot of work and “putting yourself out there”, but it’s going to be a lot of fun too. The most important thing to know is that nobody can make you into a teacher. Only you can do it. So, the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.

It is not about becoming somebody else, but about becoming you and finding your voice, becoming your voice, and then teaching and sharing what you love.

What you will learn and practice teaching during this teacher training:

  • You will first learn and practice on your own body WHY you do every single movement, what the purpose is and how to do it. Where to feel the stretch, how to breathe, how to not crunch or close the body, how to avoid discomfort. For example, did you know that pulling out the butt cheeks in a sitting posture is supposed to rotate your hip so that you can effortlessly sit straighter? That students often tense the muscles they are trying to stretch? There are hundreds of these tiny little pointers, that can transform your and your student’s practice.
  • Having fully immersed yourself into a posture and once you thoroughly understand it through your own experience, you will practice teaching on your fellow students', receiving continuous feedback and improvement suggestions.
  • With practice and guidance you will learn to see / feel where a student’s body is closed and how to help it open, if somebody is uncomfortable, needs a variation or just a gentle hand.
  • You will intricately learn, understand and practice how to do adjustments, get your students deeper into postures (knowing exactly how deep to push and at what angle), as well as give, make up and teach variations tailored to individual student’s needs.
  • By giving you the tools, experience, and practice, you will understand the sequencing of asanas for a class. You will be able to put together your own sequences for different lengths, levels, injuries, age, variations to difficult postures or relevant to philosophical themes (f.ex. heart openers) or physical themes (chest openers, hip openers..).
  • During this program, you will learn to teach Ahimsa Yoga Ashram's exciting, yet simple, logical and truly revolutionary approach to Hatha yoga, that tweaks traditional postures in sometimes just the slightest magical way, transforming your and your students' experience with their bodies, and the very way your students will ever think about yoga (it can be as little as turning a palm or head, but it can leave your body more open, your breath fuller, eliminate discomfort etc).
  • You will be able to teach up to 15-hours of workshop on alignment (principles behind standing, sitting, walking, forward bend, side bend, chest openers, turns)
  • You will intrinsically learn how breath supports the opening of the body.
  • You will learn the art of teaching. Many tips and tricks from projecting your voice, walking the room, how to use voice corrections and physical corrections, and give variations for different level students in the same class. You will learn how to be a good teacher, from projecting your voice, to holding space, to when to speak and when not to speak, how to teach multiple levels of students in one class, how to weave spiritual themes into your classes, and how to get vast amounts of information into one class without overloading your students and much much more. You are welcome to
  • You will learn, live, and teach yogic philosophy. When you leave here, you will be comfortable to teach classes, workshops, and privates. Nothing here is just theory!
  • You will be able to confidently answer students questions after class about postures
  • You will be able to teach bandhas, mudras, pranayamas, and meditation
  • You will be able to teach workshop on philosophy and history.
  • You will experience on your own body what it feels like when your body feels absolutely fabulous, when your body is open, and when your energy channels are open
  • You will have many hours of personal or individual attention
  • You will have taught many classes
  • You will learn how to relieve your students' discomfort in sitting postures and many other challenging postures
  • You will learn to transform your students' yoga practices forever, no matter what their experience level or style is
  • You will learn what it looks and feels like when your students' bodies and energies are open. This is where the magic of adjustments and variations comes from
  • You will then learn the magic of adjusting your students, to ensure absolutely no pain, crunching, or discomfort
  • You will understand how the body works, so that you can apply those principles to any asana (posture) and even asanas not discussed during class
  • You will understand the art of developing and giving teaching for different kinds of students
  • You will understand the principles behind the perfect alignment, movement, and stretching

Additionally to your 200 certified hours, you will have over 200 extra yoga related study hours, making a total of a 400-hour intensive.

Come and find your own voice! Ahimsa Yoga Ashram is a Yoga Alliance YACEP (Continued Education Provider) and their courses can count toward Continued Education requirements.

Come and leave here an excellent teacher. Confident and ready to go with an open heart and a smile on your face.
