Each student will be staying in their own large, private four-person tent in a beautiful jungle setting. Each tent is covered with a roof for maximum space and comfort. Each tent has a large mattress, sheets, pillows, and a towel. You can also put up your own tent in your own space if you prefer. This rustic, simple, yet comfortable setup will enable you to learn and to immerse yourself in a yogic lifestyle close to nature and without distractions.

The ashram is a quiet retreat away from the noise of towns and cars. They have one acre of land at the end of a long dirt road with a tiny house and garden, a large open space with a log fire circle, a small, budding veggie garden, and many secluded, private shady areas with trees for the tents and relaxation. They also have their own well with drinking water. The yoga platforms are surrounded by lush greenery and exotic animals.

Please read the whole program of this yoga retreat very carefully as it involves living in an ashram with a communal style of living and a very specifically designed program. It is not for an ordinary yoga school. The purpose of yoga is the development of self-awareness to the point of liberation.

If you stay in the patterns and surroundings that you are used to, there will be no change. Allow yourself to delve into a new experience without judgment and expectations and be transformed. This retreat is an extraordinary experience to explore this fascinating new world of being.

Ashram living

This is not an ordinary yoga school, but an ashram, which is a house of learning. For this magical retreat, you are invited into Xian's home. This is not a fancy retreat center with fancy facilities, but a natural, wonderful jungle home with access to incredible learning.

The quality of teachings and the ashram sharing environment are of the highest caliber and are a unique and wonderful offering. You are very likely to learn more during your yoga classes and lectures with Xian, as well as the guided study and reading time, than in a previous lifetime of yoga classes and most yoga teacher trainings.

You are not just coming to the ashram for a room and a yoga class, but for a transformational experience. These kinds of experiences are not always what you might expect, but at the ashram you will encounter a little piece of magic that you will not find anywhere else, allowing you to open your mind and heart and you will learn many little tips and tricks that will allow you to take this magic home with you.

You will learn what is not taught anywhere else and you will be able to ask what you have always wanted to ask about yoga and many other things. The ashram combines joyful play and deep learning in a wonderfully open way. The Ahimsa Yoga Ashram is about transcending the normal patterns of constant need for occupation and external stimulation, such as internet, music, towns, and culinary addictions.

It is about opening up to your internal world and to a communal lifestyle of active curiosity, exploration, and learning. Learn to make a wooden spoon, prepare a workshop to share, learn to sing a song with someone, read a book, help in the garden, or simply sit and listen to the jungle.

During the student study groups, you will practice and review with the other students what you have learned during the morning classes to solidify the new knowledge within your body and mind. You will learn how to put your own yoga practice and sequence together and do many other fascinating things.

During the self-study, you can go over reviews and practice topics, as well as explore the ashram's fantastic library on yoga and many other fascinating subjects. There is time for questions and answers with Xian, listen to amazing lectures, partake in the fun skill and knowledge sharing workshops each afternoon, learn a variety of incredible skills, and maybe even share some of your own passions. Some afternoons, the ashram offers classes from guest yoga teachers.

There is also plenty of time for relaxation and enjoying the beautiful ashram grounds. Please note that people at the ashram live a simple, down-to-earth, joyful yogic lifestyle, which means they eat simple but wholesome food and their accommodation and style of living are natural and uncomplicated. Their aim is to nourish consciousness, constant conscious awareness, gentleness, sweetness, and contentment with the little things.

Being in tune with the little things during the day, such as being quiet for the babies or switching off the light, can become a spiritual practice of awareness. Walking barefoot can become a practice of constant conscious attention and slowing down. Daily reminders written on your hand can become the easy way of remembering to focus on your posture throughout the day.

The ashram is your space for these three weeks and you will get as much out of your stay there as you are willing to put in. You finally have all the time for all the things yoga that you always wanted to have. If you use this precious time wisely, you can leave there a changed person if you allow yourself to stay open, and if you immerse yourself into their program without expectations, judgment, and with an eternally youthful open heart.

There are some rules to be observed, such as quiet speech, no amplified music, internet strictly limited to half an hour daily, simple, yet delicious vata reducing diet (vata is the speedy, fast element in the bodies and mind), veganism, and no smoking, alcohol, coffee, or other stimulants. There will be plenty of free time and relaxation, but if you come to the ashram, you want to be motivated to be actively involved.

The ashram also asks students to stay on the premises and the immediate surrounding areas during the retreat days to allow full immersion into a new way of being, away from the normal life. The ashram day off is Saturdays. The ashram asks you to honor and respect these guidelines during your stay here.

The yoga program

Please know that this is a very carefully designed comprehensive program of learning and experiencing, which has been tried and tested over many years. It is designed to open your body, mind, spirit, and energy channels, as well as to release mental, emotional, and physical conditionings.

Please note that Xian will not teach you an exercise class, workout regime, or studio yoga class every day. But she will systematically teach you yoga and help you transform your practice beyond what you ever thought possible, no matter if you are a beginner, advanced student, or even yoga teacher.

From Mondays to Saturdays, your morning classes will last for one and a half hour. Besides asana, your classes will also include meditation, bandas, mudras, mantras, and lectures and stories on interesting topics from Xian’s vast store of yogic knowledge.

Step 1

For the first 10 days, you will go step by step through individual postures and categories of alignment, one at a time. The various categories of alignment which you will focus on include how to stand, how to sit comfortably cross-legged, forward bends, side bends, turns, back bends, and combinations. Within these categories, you will cover standing, sitting, kneeling as well as lying front and back.

Xian will explain and demonstrate and then you will experience how you were taught to do a posture or how you were used to do it in comparison with the new way of XianYoga. You will learn the fundamental principles of XianYoga and how to feel fabulous and open in every single posture, as well as being able to take full unrestricted breaths of air by focusing on alignment, elongation, and much more.

You will understand little magic tricks that are never taught in yoga classes, which will transform your practice forever. Students have often never learned what to do but are often simply trying to copy what the teacher or a yogi in a photo or video looks like. Many students are unsure of how to do an asana, where to feel the stretch, or which alignment principles behind the movements are, how to never feel uncomfortable, crunched, or in pain.

At the ashram, you will be taught everything you always wanted to know about yoga, your teachers will explain everything you never understood, and you will learn what you never thought possible.

Step 2

With the basics covered, you will then continue with a full daily practice, as well as focusing on many areas by request, such as hip-openers, shoulders, inversions, balancing postures, hand balance postures, headstands, handstands, and much more.

You will learn how important tiny changes in posture are in terms of your arms, hands, head, rotations, and eyes. You will also learn different pranayama and mudras; how to do them, why and when do to different kinds, why they are so fabulous, and many other exciting practices.

No experience needed, suitable for all levels and styles

No matter what your level of experience, yoga tradition or style is, everybody leaves the ashram with knowledge, practice, experience, and lots of great unexpected insights. This retreat is suitable for beginners, advanced students, as well as new or experienced yoga teachers.

Afternoons

This is your opportunity to share yourself, knowledge, skills, and passions. Ahimsa Yoga Ashram’s Facebook site will give you many wonderful impressions of the wonderfully silly, informative, fun, and simply amazing things that people teach in these workshops.

Eelan and Kailan

Eelan and Kailan are Xian’s wonderful two-year-old twin boys. Babies are the best teachers. You will learn quiet and excitement, fascination with the little things, exploration and adventure, caring, patience, and how completely and utterly in the now babies are.

Xian makes a point of conscious education, by including her babies into her lifestyle, setting clear boundaries, and within those allowing complete freedom. They are beautiful little creatures and they will be around during the day. As these little buddies still sleep in the morning and at lunch time, the ashram asks for quiet time during these hours.

"I recently came to Nicaragua for a 21-day intensive retreat at Ahimsa Yoga Ashram. It was a truly life changing trip for me. First of all, being off grid and completely immersed in nature was so healing. I was truly able to connect with myself and made friends who will last a lifetime. Sleeping in a tent in the jungle, listening to all the natural sounds, enabled me to really sleep, returning to my natural rhythm. Eating vegan, which was not the case before, now I am a vegetarian and I feel so great. Daily yoga and meditation were beautiful. Xian has created a healing, uplifting, and welcoming environment for anyone who is not worried about getting a little dirty and seeing a few bugs."

"I stayed for almost two weeks here and learned a lot from Xian! She has a huge knowledge about yoga, spirituality, nutrition, and all kinds of other stuff, which she happily shares with the volunteers. I was mainly working in the garden but whenever I was tired of something, she gave me something else to do, which I appreciated a lot. You can also always mention your own ideas and be creative. I had an amazing time with Xian and her adorable babies and am very grateful for all the things I learned."

"Xian came to be an excellent teacher. I learned many things quickly. She keeps a tight ship and needs everyone's helping hand. This gave me a friendly reminder to keep a conscious mind on all my movements and energy that I put into everything. I was taught about many different yoga practices, including alignment issues, building energy by conscious thought and meditation, and balance exercises. Saying grace and an opportunity to express gratefulness before every meal kept me in a good mood and happy thoughts for every moment."

"An absolutely wonderful experience. From the moment I arrived at Xian's home, I felt comfortable and welcomed. I ended up staying longer than my planned three weeks and I am already planning to return in the fall! There are a daily routine and work schedule, which are shared equally between volunteers. Everybody takes turns cooking, washing up, helping with the beautiful babies, and hosting workshops. I loved changing the workshop theme each day because it creates a very fun and interactive experience. The actual hours vary depending on your skills, your preference, and what really needs to be done. It is simple and goes by relatively quickly. Xian (as a bonus) shares her knowledge of yoga. Alignment, philosophy, experiences, and so much more! My yoga practice has forever changed for the better. Thank you so much for opening your home and your heart with me, Xian. I look forward to keeping in touch with you."

"We spent an amazing, mind-expanding, and life-changing month at this magical little place Xian has created. I have dreamed of being able to experience life in an intentional community like this one. We learned so much about the yogic principles, meditation, and esoteric goodness. The food was great, work was fulfilling, and her babies are the cutest. Thank you infinitely, Xian, and a shoutout to all the karma yogis who made this experience so memorable!"

"What a magical trip. I am so grateful for this mind-changing experience! I thank everyone I met on my travel through Central America. Cheers to all the sublime weirdos for the crazy Envision Festival in Costa Rica! So thankful that energies led my way to the wonderful volcanic island in Nicaragua, where I finally found myself. Thanks to Ghislain Beauchamp, the Carpe Diem eco project, and all the lovely volunteers I met there. I really enjoyed learning how to build a house with nothing more than natural materials on the amazing Isla Los Brasiles. Thanks from the bottom of my heart to Xian and her Ahimsa Yoga Ashram, Nicaragua, near San Juan del Sur, for bringing me further than I have been in my whole life so far, all within three weeks. Nice one to Aaron Ledezma and the whole Guácima crew for having me and last but not least, thanks to everyone who shared a part of the way with me."

"I have left the ashram only a few days and I already sincerely miss it. What an incredible space. I loved everything about it, including the yoga, the various workshops, the natural building, hanging out with the babies, and the community feeling that Xian has created. Xian's wealth of knowledge is second to none. The three hours of work per day did not feel like work at all. I learned so much within one month. If you like to learn and grow as an individual, then this is a perfect place for you. Xian, keep up the inspirational work!"

"I stayed with Xian and the twins for the month of February. Within that month, I learned so much about the philosophy and practice of yoga. It is the knowledge that helps and guides me daily in meditation and yoga practice. The twins are adorable and it is impossible not to love them. Xian is a wonderful human that genuinely wants to see you reach new levels and expand yourself. As far as the workday goes, she allows you to add your personal touch to projects that you undertake and is open to ideas for new projects that you may have in mind. It was the highlight of my trip to Central America and I recommend it to anyone that wants to immerse themselves in a learning, loving, and sharing the environment."

  • Review by Vanessa from Germany

"Xian's place is priceless. You will learn much more about yoga than you ever will in ordinary classes! We learned so much about alignment and safe, protective ways to enter postures. The first lesson is just about how to stand properly, the second is how to sit, the third is how to walk, and so on and so forth! At first, I was a little unsure about paying for volunteering and after the second day, I realized that I would actually even like to pay her more because she is giving so much and I was getting so much out of the whole experience! I am very blessed and grateful to have been part of a wonderful group in March and I would recommend this place to everyone! Thank you, Xian, for blowing my mind! "

  • Review by Simon Thomson from Toronto, Canada

"I was looking all over for a genuine yoga experience, one that focused on the philosophy and history of the practice. Through a series of fortunate events, I was led to Xian; in her, I found a very knowledgeable and lovable person. She taught me everything that I needed to know to start my yogic path. With my experience there, I now know it is a path that I want to follow. Ela and Kylan were so much fun to watch in the month that I was there. The workshops allowed all of us volunteers to share our knowledge with everyone else, which has taught me the merit of trading knowledge with everyone that I meet. I was incredibly fortunate to find this little paradise and I know many more people will find their way here for the knowledge that they long for."

"We stayed for four weeks with Xian and her adorable twins. There were also some other volunteers and we all enjoyed the group energy a lot. We can hardly believe what we have learned in such a short period of time. We not only shared Xian's knowledge about yoga and meditation but also about how to live your life consciously in order to be happy, content, open-minded, self-loving, and aware. We also could improve our skills in gardening, speaking English, cooking, and entertaining babies. We are really grateful for the time we had and we really do know that it is our choice whether to live a happy life or not. We are looking forward to seeing you again!"

It has such a peaceful atmosphere and an amazing sense of community. I would highly recommend going! Thank you so much, Xian, for opening your home to me. I hope to see you again sometime soon!"

  • Review by Anna from Sweden

"During my six weeks here, I have learned a lot, both about yoga, spirituality, myself, and also about living in a community in a third world country, long term traveling, nature, gardening, cooking, nutrition, babies, motherhood, building, painting, and art; by reading, listening, singing, feeling, discussing, paying attention, awareness, mindfulness, silence, breathing, and much more. It feels like this place is a continuous learning space and you can never get too much! I definitely see the world and myself in a completely different way already. If I can incorporate only a couple of all the things I learned in my everyday life, it will definitely change my life forever! "

"I think one to two months is a good time for a start, but if you only have a week or so with an opportunity to visit, do it! Xian and her two babies are absolutely adorable people and I felt at home straight away (except it took some days to get used to living in a tent in a jungle). The community is always changing, so there is always something new brought by the people arriving. All people that I have met here are super cool and inspiring! I would super recommend this place and think everyone would benefit from staying here."

"This place is amazing! I was only able to stay here for a week, but I learned a lifetime of knowledge in that time. I wish I had more time to spend here. Xian is an awesome person and knows about so many different topics. The yoga classes in the morning teach you so much! She makes amazing lunches and her afternoon workshops are extremely informative. The volunteer hours are super rewarding because you can physically see how your efforts are helping to improve. Since I was always working on volunteer projects with at least one other person, I bonded with all of my fellow volunteers and had fun doing things like pick-axing, leaf collecting, and sewing. I already have plans to return to do more volunteer work here. I highly recommend taking some time to be a part of this community! "

"This is an incredible space to work in nature, learn yoga, and share and express new ideas. During my time there, I learned to how to care for babies, cook delicious healthy food, respect nature, expand my knowledge of yoga, and breathing exercises. Xian possesses a great deal of wisdom through her knowledge of yoga and experiences traveling all around the planet. If you are open to learning new things, expanding your knowledge, and experiencing deep peace, then this is the place to go. Thank you, Xian, for all of your knowledge. It was truly an unforgettable experience."

"We do not know where to begin. Xian is just an amazing girl who lives in an amazing place! We spent three weeks there, which were awesome, and a good time to learn yoga with all the amazing talks about spirituality and life in general. Xian really tries to get you as comfortable as possible. The two babies are very kind and funny! We had a very good time there."

  • Review by Christoph from Germany

"This place was really amazing for me! I stayed here for six weeks and really shared life with amazing people: Xian and Akabal, their really cute babies, and their dog. Even though I was not into yoga at all before I came here, I felt like I was able to learn a lot and really get into using yoga as a way of treating my body and mind because of the good classes I received here and all the knowledge and experience of Xian and Akabal."

"The working hours (only three hours a day) were really not hard and easy going, as Xian and Akabal only told us to work the way we could instead of expecting results. They were thankful for every bit that has been done. I found it very comfortable that they welcomed any personal ideas to make their property a beautiful inspiring place. I was able to work on my own ideas very often. "

"They would never run out of work in the garden and around the property. Once, I did not have any personal ideas, so that felt like a perfect working environment for me and often I did not feel like working, but rather do stuff that I would like to do and the three hours flew by without me noticing. "

"I also liked that this place is pretty close to San Juan del Sur, so whenever we had a day off, we would be able to go down for a swim in the sea and relax at the beach, go to the local market, enjoy coffee, ice cream, smoothies, empanadas, or really good pizza, and just have a calm day. "

"I love that I was able to get to know you guys. You felt like my friends and family very quickly, rather than just being my hosts. You really made me feel at home for a while and I already miss your place! I love all the experiences that I have had with you and all the things I learned from living with you for a while. I am very thankful that I was able to live with such amazing and interesting people and I am proud to call you my friends and family. "

"I wish all the best for you guys and I hope all your ideas and projects will work out well and will help to make your place grow in the way you want it. I see a lot of potential in this place! "

"Thank you very much for this precious experience!"
