Thomas Ogram

Thomas Ogram is the founder of Ahimsa Academy. He was born in Scotland in 1965 and travelled extensively with his family as a child, visiting and living in England, Liberia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa and later travelled to Ireland, India Denmark, Spain, China, Laos, Thailand, California, and Malaysia as an adult.

He started to study yoga as a child just over forty years ago and has taught in India. His training has been and continues to be a life-long affair with new discoveries each day. He loves to share this sublime science and many of his students are now teachers with some even training teachers themselves. He believes in basics, proper techniques and safeties with an intelligent progression of asanas that is not going for headstands on your first lesson. His study of yoga, which has lasted over forty years under a few masters, has covered the main branches of Hatha yoga, Karma yoga, Raja yoga, Jhana yoga, Bhakti yoga and Kundalini yoga.

His first teacher of the ancient arts was his father who introduced him to yoga during his early years. Thomas continued to study all branches of classic yoga with the divine life society and various other Indian teachers in South Africa where yoga had been popular for many decades as there is a very large Indian population there and most of the prominent Indian masters including Iyengar and Sivananda were regular visitors with well-established schools.

Thomas started to study martial arts as a teenager and was attracted by the philosophy and the fact that the practice would strengthen his mind and body and as a means to understand his inner self at a much deeper level. He has been blessed to have received tuition from some of the very high level masters of various arts and continues to teach the arts in the traditional way, as they have been taught for centuries.

His lifelong interest in healing methods led him to the study of Medicinal Qigong, an ancient Chinese medical system utilizing breathing techniques and movement, that is gaining recognition for being very effective and this forms the backbone of the health recovery programs he offers as well as various massage techniques and reflexology which he practiced professionally.

He moved into full time teaching over 30 years ago and has taught in yoga in South Africa, England, Ireland, India, Denmark, Spain, and Tai Chi in China, advanced Tai Chi and martial arts in California and recently in Thailand for that lasted for 6 years. Since doing Qigong and Tai Chi retreats in Thailand, Thomas then moved to Siem Reap, Cambodia to open a venue dedicated to Yoga and Qigong.

The Red Tomato Yoga Hostel is situated right in the heart of Siem Reap. The in-house restaurant is located below the hostel and everyday you can smell the best pizza in Siem Reap, which you need to try while visiting the place. Aside from that, sunset watching from the sundeck after a refreshing and rewarding practice is also highly recommended. The attraction hubs of Siem Reap are literally under the sundeck. It is perfectly placed to cater for the yoga traveler who still likes a good night out at some of the local places and a not too early start to the practice the next morning.

"Thomas is very knowledgeable about yoga and provides an unpretentious service, tailored to small class sizes. The studio is centrally located near Pub St and has a great outlook. The open-air top floor studio has a wonderful view overlooking Siem Reap with a perfect aspect for appreciating the sunset. It also provides a natural hot-yoga effect which is great for increasing flexibility, yet has fans for comfort also. The classes are reasonably priced and run for one hour. "

"I am a solo English traveller getting back into yoga after a very long break and stumbled across Thomas's yoga studio. This place has such a great energy and especially sunset yoga the space just glows, magic. Thomas is a fantastic yoga instructor, so welcoming and not intimidating at all which I was afraid of from being out of it so long. 100% recommended you visit. Great people, great vibes."

"This place is situated on the roof of the Red Tomato Hostel and offers you a great view over the city and the market. I went there for a morning yoga session at 10 am and Thomas the teacher offered us tea before the session and lead us through a dynamic and very hot hour of yoga. If you are a beginner or an advanced practitioner does not matter - Thomas provides you with alternative asanas according to your level. I can definitely recommend this place."

"Fun, hot and challenging but most importantly inclusive for beginners and well practiced yogis. I stumbled across the sign for Ahimsa Yoga (above Red Tomato restaurant) wandering around the market next to Pub Street. I took a friend to the 5.30pm (sunset class) who had never taken a class before and we both loved it. No fluff, just fun and straightforward yoga instruction - a lot of sweating - and then some tea, relaxing on the terrace overlooking the markets. Thomas is a great teacher. He's really down to earth and makes his classes challenging but fun! I went back the next day and so did half of the first days class. I'd recommend to anyone, especially those who 'don't do yoga' but fancy a workout! Thanks very much guys. We'll be back!"

"I am a French traveller and I joined this place as a volunteer for 2 weeks. Thomas, the yoga teacher, is incredibly nice and friendly. I had not practised yoga for a long time and my first lessons were perfect : not too demanding, but you still feel your body working, and I felt better and better over days. I really liked that every lesson was different, a combination of exercises (this is classic yoga). I would definitely suggest to participate to more than 1 lesson if you can. They plan to expand the yoga place and open a vegan restaurant also. The place is upstairs, very relaxing, with a nice view above the city and you can even come there to chill before/after yoga. There are all the facilities to take a shower after the lesson, and drink some free tea :)"

"I was passing by the city center and I saw the sign of the Ahimsa Yoga Academy. Daily classes for every level. And a class at 5h30 PM to practice on the rooftop with the sunset on the city. Lovely. And the yoga teacher is professional and fun. We had a good time."
