Course curriculum

Yoga philosophy

What is yoga? This is where the definition of yoga is discussed. Where and when did the practice of yoga begin? What are the principles of yoga? How it evolved, and spread its knowledge? Here, the goal is to give you a strong foundation in the fundamentals of yoga that you can implement into your daily life, and build upon throughout your journey.

Asanas

As one of the eight limbs of yoga, the study of eighty plus asanas is designed to delve deeper into various categories of poses - to learn and understand their benefits, modifications, progressions, regressions, and most importantly how to properly and safely get in and out of each pose. This builds upon the foundation by creating the framework in which you can begin to create a complete practice and begin the process of self-awareness and self-care.

The art and science of sequencing

With a deeper understanding and strong core knowledge of individual poses, you will begin to work with the art and science of sequencing a practice. You will explore Hatha and Vinyasa styles of yoga practice, themed sequencing, and how to prepare a sequence that is accessible by all, complete with modifications.

Pranayama: the art of breathing

The breath is the bridge between the body and the mind. Here, you will learn the art of various breathing exercises, when to use and practice them, and what their physiological and psychological effects are.

Anatomy and physiology

In order to practice or teach a great sequence, you need to understand first the muscles, bones, fascia and joints of the body, and how it applies to the movement of the body from asana to asana. How should the bones stack and the muscles wrap around them? How do you both strengthen and protect your joints? Learn what to look for in your own body as well as the bodies of your varying students to ensure a safe and effective practice accessible to all, free from pain and injury.

Therapeutic yoga for injury and joint health

More often than not, practitioners come to yoga post injury, in search of a way to heal and stay moving. With this in mind, we delve deep into therapeutic benefits for the shoulders, hips, spine, knee, and other major joints of the body. As well as psychological issues of depression, trauma, emotional imbalance and more. Asthma, sciatica, diabetes prevention, and etc. will be covered.

Teaching methodology

Having the knowledge of yoga is mission number one - mission two is preparing you with different tools to communicate your knowledge effectively to others. Here, you will experiment with different ways of communication with others, across cultures, across language. You will work to find your voice and unique teaching style. You will practice on and observe your peers fine-tune these skills

Lifestyle and ethics for yoga teachers

The teachers will work with you for you to understand the qualities of a yoga teacher based on the yogic principles of niyamas, yamas, and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Meditation and chanting

Learning objectives - you will know that we have completed this section when you can:

  • Establish a self-practice schedule away from class

Business of yoga

Learning objectives - you will know that we have completed this section when you can:

  • Build a strong and relevant yoga resume highlighting your strengths, skills, and experience
  • How to use social media and gain visibility online
  • Maintaining your ethics and professionalism throughout the journey of being a teacher
  • Successfully understand where to draw the line between business and the real goal of yoga
  • Understand how to connect with other yoga schools and build relations in your community
  • Understanding liability issues and obtaining all permits, licenses, and more

Assignments and certification

There will be home assignments given periodically. Please make sure you have enough time during the week to complete these assignments and submit on time. Home assignments will complement the class work and will help you internalize the subject matter of Yoga more clearly. One should complete all home assignments before course completion.

To successfully complete your course and be eligible for certification, you need to attend all indicated classes, submit your assignments on time, and complete your examination with a passing grade.

Course material and attendance

All course material is included in the tuition. You will receive the Aham Yoga manual, worksheets, schedule, and basic stationery. They will share all materials with you. Reading requirements like books are not included in your course. You can buy these at Aham Yoga, online, or find a copy in the library.

Practicum

The final examination is a combination of written and practical components. Aham Yoga will prepare you for the written exam throughout the course with quizzes, tips, and tricks. An eight percent score is needed to pass the written exam.

For the practical, we require you to teach a real class of students at organized by us. This session with be graded by Arundhati and Aparna separately and they will assign performance scores as they deem appropriate. This will be scheduled with your instructor during the last two weeks of your course.

Teachers will only allow a maximum of three attempts. They will train you thoroughly during your classes on how to teach, what to teach, and help you be successful. In case, one cannot clear the practical, even after three attempts, we will have you try again in the next set of examinations for a fee. Every participant needs to pass successfully in both written and practical examinations for certification.

Student conduct

Each student will be held to a high standard of conduct, demonstrating respect for their peers and maintaining confidentiality for people in the training. Any form of bias, sexual harassment, violation of state or federal laws, or proven dishonesty will be grounds for dismissal from the program, and refunds handled according to the school’s refund policy.

Schedule

Classes will be held from Monday to Sunday. Classes will be conducted from 12:00 to 17:00 (Mondays to Fridays) and from 10:00 to 17:00 (Saturdays and Sundays). All Wednesdays will be your day off.

    Arundhati is the founder and lead teacher of the Aham Yoga International. She started to practice yoga after six years of teaching Bollywood dance in Bangalore, India. She took to it instantly after a couple of dance injuries and began to pursue a long and rewarding journey through her practice that now overflows onto her many loving students. Before moving to Seattle, USA, her thirst for the knowledge and authenticity of yoga led her to some of the best schools and yoga masters in India.

  • Aparna Ramesh

    Aparna originally came to yoga as a way to balance her otherwise hectic and stressful lifestyle. She started with Hatha, Yin, and Bikram classes while living in Canada in 2006, and continued to experiment with various styles and instructors over the next several years. In 2012, she enrolled in the 200-hour Vinyasa and Hatha teacher training course at Atmayaan Yoga Academy in Bangalore - the first step in her long and rewarding journey.

    "This studio teaches Hatha yoga inspired by Iyengar. I attended Level 1-2 and 2-3 classes here. This studio is set a bit away from the crowds and the hustle bustle. I loved the chirping of the birds I heard outside. Went very well with the calm of the yoga practice.The classes here are all taught by the owner. She is a great teacher who pays close attention to every student. I loved how she noticed the minor details and her cues landed perfectly for me. She provides assists when she feels a verbal cue is not landing. She keeps the classes fun and interactive.I was amazed by how much she remembers about every student. She makes every student feel seen. There were 2 pregnant women in our class and they were doing a different sequence altogether for part of the class. This seemed almost seamless to the rest of the class. She provides great modifications and variations to almost every student in class. She encourages the use of props and she made me use some where I don't normally use them. This really helped me with those poses (shoulder stand and hanuman) and made me feel a sense of accomplishment."
