Syllabus

Asana practice (morning and late afternoon)

  • Pavanmuktasana and Basic warm-up - The preparatory exercises aim to release the body's initial energetic or physical blocks before the asana practice. The first series releases joint tension and stiffness and works with rheumatism. The second series strengthens the digestive system. The series is taught with the awareness of the body, the breath, and energy
  • Suryanamaskar and Chandranamaskar: Practicing traditional Suryanamaskar and Chandranamaskar with variations and practicing alignment and coordination of the breath with the movement
  • Standing asanas - Studying and practicing the correct alignment starting from the base points of contact and how you rise and distribute your weight and balance your feet and legs with a stable core
  • Sitting asanas - Sitting asanas offer the opportunity to root into the ground and find light above the pelvis. Being aware of the correct placement of the legs in various positions, spine and torso alignment, while bending at the hips
  • Forward extension - Build onto the sitting asanas and work with extending and flexing the feet, legs, spine, abdomen, and arms to increase the strength and mobility of the body's joints. Start learning alignment, range of motion, and compression and tension theory by practicing forward extensions. *Abdominal Asanas - Studying and practicing abdominal strengthening asanas
  • Backward extension - Practicing and studying the details and adjustments of preparatory back strengthening asanas, then introducing backward extensions, their cautions, and adaptations for getting into the posture, retaining it, and safely releasing the pose
  • Restorative asana practice - Practicing and understanding the value of practicing postures healthily by holding poses for a more extended time and working with the breath. The benefits of restorative asanas include oxygenating the internal organs with rest and awareness, studying and practicing how to come into inversions and supine and prone reclining postures, and how long to hold and release the poses
  • Shatkriyas (Yoga detox) - Introduce the theory, benefits, and instructions on performing shatkriyas, Uddyana bandha, agnisara, and Kapalabhati. The practice of Jalaneti and studying Vanmana, Basti, Vamana, and Shankapraksalana with benefits and precautions
  • Pranayama - A sequence of preparatory breathing techniques (such as 3-stage yogic breath, Nadi shodan, and bastrika) and pranayama techniques (such as ujayee, shitali or sitkari Chandra bhedana, and brahmari) will be taught in the class. The safety and precautions of pranayama practice and the physical and energetic value of this subtle practice will be introduced. Mantras, Mudras, Bandhas, and correct seating positions will be integrated into the course
  • Mudras and Bandhas - The definition and description of mudra and bandha theory will form part of energetic anatomy. The theory and mudras will be practiced separately and with pranayama and asana. The location of the three significant bandhas will also be attended to in the asana and pranayama practice
  • Meditations: Introducing and discussing the value of meditation. Active and passive meditations for a modern lifestyle where people can find relaxation through mindful breathing, exercise, or dance
  • Awareness meditation techniques and ancient tantra Meditations (no sexual activity)
  • Yoga Nidra: Yoga Nidra is guided by the teacher and takes the participants into deep relaxation. It releases tension in the body and mind
  • Karma yoga - As a practice of Karma yoga is keeping the Yogshala clean and neat, all the students will be scheduled to clean the yoga hall every day. Karma yoga teaches that through even small, dedicated actions, you bring about positive change in immediate and distant surroundings.
  • Yoga philosophy: Explanation of yoga tradition and history, the purpose of yoga, its origin, and various traditional and modern yoga styles. Yoga Philosophy is an essential part of holistic yoga. Some important yogic texts, like the Hathayogpradipika, will be taught and discussed.

Understanding four chapters of the Yogsutra of Patanjali such as Samadhipada, Sadhanapada, Vibhutipada, and Kaivalyapada. Understanding, studying, and practicing the eight limbs of the Ashtanga yoga Yama, Niyama, asana, pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharna, Dhyan, and Samadhi

Lectures on the different body systems and how they are interrelated. Students will grasp the types of joint activities and understand the function of muscular groups and joints to ensure safe physical practice. The importance of compression/tension theory in providing a safe asana practice and teaching environment
  • Energy anatomy and physiology - Introducing the concepts around the seven chakras, three granthis, five koshas, vayus, Kundalini energy, and three nadis. Yoga and meditation and how one can start observing these subtle energy channels and bodies through practice.
  • Teaching methodology and communication skills: Communication is one of the powerful tools for sharing or teaching. Communication points will be practiced and discussed to make the skills more effective. The topic will also refer to the ethics of a yoga teacher as suggested by the Yamas in the Patanjali Yogsutras and the responsibility to share the proper knowledge with patience and allow repetition and clarity.
  • Observing the class while another teacher is teaching: In group teaching, practice observing the class while another teacher is teaching. It is an excellent way to learn the positive qualities and mistakes from the teacher, and observing students also can be good for learning. The multiple teaching practice sessions will make aspiring teachers more confident to share their newly acquired knowledge.
  • Assisting and adjusting students - Each student will have an opportunity to practice how to offer adjustments to asanas in the class. Advait Yoga teaches poses that support natural and safe posture with anatomically correct spine alignment. Proper alignment prevents injuries and maximizes the benefits of any asana. Poor posture blocks energy flow, negatively impacting one's physical, emotional, and mental well-being; good posture energizes your whole being.
  • Ethics for teachers - From the start of the course, the signed code of ethics will describe the responsibilities of both student and teacher and set the guidelines and expectations to maintain and create a sincere learning environment. A teacher's qualities and ethics are demonstrated through actions, thoughts, and words. The lecture session discusses how ethics for teaching can be based on the Yamas and Niyamas to create a healthy learning and teaching environment.
  • Teacher's qualities - A group discussion will be held to engage and elaborate on a teacher's different attributes and ethics. The students will reflect on their ethics and acknowledge the qualities they already have that support their path as yoga teachers. The student will recognize that we all are both eternal students and aspiring and inspiring teachers. The students will be inspired to incorporate yogic ethics into their daily practice as they go forth.
  • Asana and pranayama teaching practice - Each student will teach asana, pranayama, mudras, bandhas, and meditation classes. Learn to use their communication skills, make hands-on adjustments, and sequence a class.
  • Business aspects of teaching yoga - The ethics of starting and managing a business are based on the Yamas of Patanjali Yoga sutras.
